Loved it! Have read the first 8 in the “What doesn’t kill you”. Hoping there are at least 8 more
A not to be missed, tense, action-packed, page turner of a story! A bit different then the rest of the series, especially the opening chapter. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
I like Pamela Hutchins’ books but the utter emotional stupidity of many of her characters frustrates me. Rather than acting like adults, they jump to conclusions, always thinking the worst of the people they care for. Still, it comes right in the end. Good characters.
I received an ARC copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Hell to Pay is exciting and entertaining. In this 3rd Emily Bernal book, there’s so much
going on that it’s difficult to keep from going on to the next page and the next and so on.The people and places are so descriptive and well developed I could picture each one, what they look like, where they are, what they’re doing. One of my favorite things about these books are Ms. Fagan Hutchin’s clever, amusing “cuss” words and phrases
uttered by Emily and the way characters from other books written by Ms. Fagan Hutchins are blended in and included.
Emily and her sexy boss/soon-to-be-hubby, Jack, must defend their friend Phil after he’s arrested for the murder of his close friend. As the case moves forward, Emily is still
working to adopt a little girl named Betsy. She’s also investigating the weird. cult-like church Betsy’s foster parents are involved with, discovers the ADA is connected in some way and compromised, suspects Jack’s doing something behind her back. While in court Phil becomes ill and is hospitalized, in a coma. Emily is bound and determined to help Jack prove their friend’s innocence so she goes off on her own to investigate. What she learns, what happens to her AND Jack will keep you on the edge of your seat. Read this book and find out for yourself.
a wonderful suspenseful story! kept me on the edge of my seat. Interesting and complex characters make this a page turner. Murder and mayhem, intriguing story. A must read!
A magnificent finish to the trilogy. Emily and Jack solve their most significant case yet. The author does such a great job of building angst anticipation throughout the book. As Emily feels like her life is falling apart and she is being pulled in several different directions the reader can’t help but empathize with her. We also laugh at her creative foul language and cheer her on when she uncovers a clue. We admire her dogged determination and her unfailing love for the underdog. Without a doubt this is Emily’s greatest moment and Jack is her reward and her Knight.
Is it over?
Another case of past secrets threatening to destroy a relationship, and this time it’s the one between Emily and Jack. When each of them become overly involved with their own problems they start growing apart (at least in Emily’s eyes). Will outside forces destroy their love, or will they “pull it together” to save it? Another exciting read that you don’t want to miss.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
A happy time for Emily when friends, Phil and Nadine, at their engagement party. When murder happens and Phil is the suspect. Her boss is aloof and working on his own problems. Another good plot of twists for Emily to figure out. Enjoyed, and good twists to figure out the murder.
ARC given for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
A well-rounded thoroughly engaging and absorbing continuation of Emily and Jack’s story. A real page turner that I enjoyed immensely.
I highly recommend all the books in the “What doesn’t kill you” series by this author, but Emily and Jack are my firm favourites.
Another adventure for Emily! I can’t help but crack up at the situations that Emily seems to get herself into. Once again she is dealing with another murder and her friends are suspects. While dealing with that, she has her relationship with Jack that isn’t clear and also she is fighting to adopt Betsey, she now is dealing with a murder mystery. Emily can’t help getting herself involved. Get ready for more fun and funny shenanigans from Emily. This story kept me guessing into the end, even on Emily’s future with Jack and Betsey. This is a good conclusion for Emily fans. But really I hope to see more of her in the future.
I always have so much fun reading the What Doesn’t Kill You stories! They are fun, filled with mystery and a bit of spice. There is murder, excitement, mayhem and of course things that will make you laugh. This one was a bit slower in parts than most of the others but it picks up and keeps you interested. I loved all the little twists and how things came together in ways I did not expect! There were times in the story where Emily’s character became a little obnoxious with her insecurities but that’s how all of us can be at times and she did go through a farce of a marriage so her fears are understandable. Over all she is a very good role model who accepts people for who they are and fights for what is right and is relatable.
This review is for the audio book.
It pays to listen to this book because you will enjoy it. What I liked was it was so unpredictable, well you knew the dynamic duo would clear they friends and get him off a murder charge but it was the unusual way they had to do that I enjoyed. I can’t imagine another fictional character wrestling a snake. This is book three in the Emily series and it helps to have read or listened to the previous stories so you know who the characters are but it is not required as things are simply explained without going over and over. They is a nice balance between mystery and romance.
This book sees Emily and her fiancé Jack out celebrating a victory in court when a dead body brings the celebrations crashing to a holt. Especially as the prime suspect is the client they just cleared of theft charges and the fiancé of one of Emily closets friends. With new charges facing him Phil ends up in the hospital complicating the problem. In the process of trying to clear his name Emily also comes across some evidence that might help her adoption process of Betsy but with Jack pulling away and going all secretive she has to fight by herself. Just when Emily seems to finally everything she wants, a husband, a child, a job she loves, a home, her mother and father back together things start to unravel.
The narrator was good but I wasn’t to sure about some of the voices she used, I couldn’t tell if it was a child or an adult talking a few time towards the end but other than that she is easy to listen to.
