For those who’ve watched the films and haven’t seen the films, you have been missing out in a lot! For those who haven’t done either, read the books first and then the films. Either way, you’re in for the ride of your life, and not just on the back of a dragon. While the film is so different from its book, it’s still amazing, sticking to the one thing so important in this book: heart. Loads of heart and being so ever faithful to it. The book is simple and short (save for the series, which is long but worth reading,) but it makes up for the wonderful characters, the lessons learned, and the imagination that comes with it. You can’t ask for a better book than this, and if it’s the dragons that have brought you here…well, you’ve come to the right place.

Ummmmmm…’k?
I honestly thought I was losing my mind as I read this – I kept trying to reconcile this with the movie I saw many years ago [and thought maybe I had watched another dragon movie and was getting them confused] and finally looked up the movie and lo and behold, I was NOT losing my mind and THIS book WAS dramatically different than the movie. As in, A LOT. As in, I am not sure WHY they used the title of “How to Train Your Dragon” when they were so dramatically different. It was the same thing that happened to me after watching and loving “Ella Enchanted” and THEN finding out it was a book, getting and reading said book and then sitting back and going “WHAT just happened here?” [for the record, I love both the movie and the book, but the book wins out as a really great story that I am unsure of why they just couldn’t make a movie of that – it really is fantastic]. This is a lovely, fun, read, and I think kids will absolutely love these – I enjoyed reading/listening to it [I highly recommend the audiobook – David Tennet is a freaking GENIUS and really adds to this story!!] and should I need a short book to break up some heavy ones or something like that, I wouldn’t hesitate to read more in this series. But I will be passing on the movies. 😉
I’ve read this series to each of my four boys. They’re full of action and humor and learning how to be a hero the hard way.
Nothing like the movie. I did enjoy Hiccup, and this story seemed more true to the idea of Norse mythology than the movie. The dragons also seemed more creature like in the book than the movie. But the book’s Toothless is SO ANNOYING! Admittedly I really enjoyed the movie and thought the book may be similar. Most things I didn’t mind being different, but I just didn’t enjoy Toothless. Still an interesting story.
It is a honestly awesome book. For all the lovers of action-packed books out there this book is the right one for you. It is adventure packed and very logical. Even the movies are great!!! It is kinda realistic as it speaks about the vikings. Cressida Cowell has really outdone herself with this series. The main characters are very witty.
It was amazing, and honestly one of my favorite books.
What I love about this book is that there is a certain character, Hiccup who is really brave and stands up for himself. Even though the characters in the book call him names that does not make he stop,it actually makes him keep going. If you are looking for a good book to read “How To Train Your DRAGON” by Cressida Cowell is going to be the BEST book for you. This book takes you on adventures and you can really look through the prospective of the author. Hope you are enjoying the book, wait… do you even have the book? Well you should get it. @gmail.com">-queenbello912@gmail.com
My guess is that most of you have seen this movie. It is a favorite in our house, and the book wasn’t like the movie in many aspects. Considering it came out about 4 years before the movie, I am not surprised. This is the story of a Viking named Hiccup. (for reals). He is nothing like his “Head of the Clan” father because Hiccup is scrawny and not very brave. His job is to find a dragon to train and he finds one as scrawny as he is, and names him Toothless. (if you have seen the movie, you would know that Toothless is anything but scrawny). Hiccup has unusual techniques that he uses to train dragons and in the end, he and Toothless become the heroes of the story.
I liked this book. Because I saw the movie first, it was a bit weird because it really was very little like the movie. There were so many things that happened in the book (a large challenge among the youngest Vikings) that never happened in the movie, you really needed to view it as a completely different story. I read this with my 9 year old son and we both enjoyed it. I would recommend it for the 8-11 year old range.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III has to train a baby dragon to obey his commands in order to avoid being cast out of his Viking tribe. But can he do it? I enjoyed the movie, so I was looking forward to the book. Unfortunately, I just found it average with underdeveloped characters. And Toothless, the dragon, was especially annoying.
