DNF 50% mark
I honestly really dislike DNF ing books. I am definitely the type of person that will trudge through an absolutely horrible book just for the act of finishing it.
I just couldn’t even do it for this one. Usually, if I do trudge through a book, I can at least make fun of the cliches or start compiling a list of all the fails for my review. But I couldn’t even do that for this book because it is so incredibly, mind-numingly boring. There aren’t even cliches to laugh at or horrible characters to roll my eyes at.
The constant switching of POVs from first to third was confusing and gave me headaches, the “one mistake” is so over done and the author is trying too hard to make it a bigger deal than what it is, and (most importantly) it is so god damn slow that I was skipping 4-7 pages at a time and still understanding the plot just fine.
Over used tropes, boring characters, and unimpressing writing has made this quite the opposite of a psychological thriller. How disappointing.
Too contrived and unlikeable characters.
This as quite a story. Really kept my interest. Well written
Written in a historical context, highlights the challenges of women wanting a position in the early 1900s. Great character development.
How one mistake can totally change your life in an instant. Surprise ending. Will keep you turning the pages. Filled with a lot of life’s lessons.
Great book! Kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
Since everyone else always includes a synopsis of the story in their reviews, I won’t bother to add that here, and rather focus on what I liked and didn’t like about the story.
Likes: It held my interest throughout the book, and I found myself wanting to find out what happened. The story switched back and forth between the past and the present, and it wasn’t obvious to me at first who the person was in the “past” story.
Dislike #1: The characters! The only ones I could stand were Robert and of course the children. Amber and Vicky were a toss-up of who was the most unlikable, dumb, nasty, selfish, artificial… shall I keep going?
Dislike #2: Plausibility. There was very little, especially toward the end. Why is it that even when people know their is possible danger, they never seem to keep their cell phones with them! Phones seemed to be missing throughout the entire book.
Dislike #3: The ending kind of left me hanging, wondering how things turned out with Tom and Vicki.
So after all those dislikes, I still thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I would look for another by the same author. Her descriptions were good, making me feel immersed in the plot, and although I didn’t like the characters, I think maybe the author intended it that way.
If the last bit of the story was more believable, I would have given it 5 stars.
The title is wrong – it should be “Several HUGE Mistakes”. This book just made me angry.
This author addresses a situation that most mothers (and fathers) of very young children and babies will face at least once–can I leave my child alone safely for “just a few minutes?” The mother in the story feels she can leave her deeply sleeping baby boy alone and does so with disturbing consequences. The book is filled with interesting characters and plenty of tense scenes.
Great book!
