What do you do when you’re a mystery writer and find out you’re in the middle of a real life murder mystery? An obsessed fan decided to play out Phoebe’s stories. Phoebe is being stalked, but by whom? Throw in a handsome sexy cowboy, sexual tension, and romance. Brenda Whiteside’s story will keep you on the edge of your seat with plot twists and turns.
Holly Holt narration is amazing. She brings the story to life, giving each character their own voice and personality. I was gifted an audio and offered my honest review.
All Phoebe has is her writing, a pet bird named Perry, and the memory of good wedding sex. When she finds out her ex-husband has been killed, a man she’s already deep-sixed in one of her novels, she’s ready to get out of town and research ranch-living for her next novel…yup…with the guy from the wedding. Although the ‘research’ moves apace, the danger spikes, too, because someone wants to help Phoebe kill real people!
While part of the Love and Murder series, you wouldn’t need to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one. The events aren’t related and the characters from the first book don’t play a large role in this one.
I listened to the Audible version. The actual voice of the narrator was good, but there were many, many instances where a single line sounded like it had been added in later and it didn’t blend in at all with the existing recording. I found it very strange and distracting, almost like it was another persons voice interrupting the story.
Overall, I liked the story. I would recommend it to people who like a little external conflict along with the relationship development.

Audible. This is my second book by Brenda Whiteside and I enjoyed it even more than the first. I’m a big romantic suspense fan and will continue to seek out Whiteside’s books.
Holly Holt narrated again and did a good job. She has a pleasant voice, does a good job of differentiating characters and evoking emotions.
If you read or listened to book one you’ll recognize Phoebe as Lacy’s best friend and Mason as Chance’s brother. The book opens telling us that Phoebe & Mason had a “fling” at Lacy & Chance’s wedding. They’re now reunited as Phoebe visits Mason’s ranch to do research on an upcoming book. Unfortunately a stalker is committing murders mimicking plots from Phoebe’s books.
I always love books about authors because I wonder how much of themselves the writer put into their character. This was an enjoyable mix of suspense and romance. Several portions of the book are written from the murderer’s POV. Overall this worked except it was treated like the reader didn’t know who this person was, and it was obvious because he’s the only other character in the book. Besides that it was great and I’m looking forward to listening to “A Legacy of Love and Murder”.

4 Star review of Southwest Love & Murder (The Love & Murder series #2) by Brenda Whiteside
Audio Review:
Both author Brenda Whiteside and narrator Holly Holt are relatively new to me. We met mystery writer Phoebe Anderson in the first book in the series and I really enjoyed her character. Finding out that the second book in the series was her story was great news. Pairing her with her best friends’ brother in law, Mason Meadowlark just seemed like a fabulous added twist.
Phoebe and Mason meet when Lacy and Chance got married and they decide to have a bit of fun. Phoebe is attracted to Mason and when she needs to research her latest book she decides to visit his ranch. Mason has baggage and Phoebe needs to break through the walls he has erected if they are to have a chance. The question is can she and will Mason let her in?
Add in that Phoebe has an obsessed fan stalking her and soon danger rears it’s head.
I love romantic suspense books and this was an enjoyable listen as I felt that the narration had improved from the previous book.
