Good read with many involved links to various book review blogs and book clubs (though method of persuasion is somewhat repetitive about the third of the book).
I was looking for a book that would help me write more professional reviews. I came across this book and not only did it give me pointers on how to write a review, but how to be consistent with them!
Allyson Abbot broke down the review process and laid it out for the reviewer. Her templates are formatted well and worded for anyone to easily understand. I was quickly able to make my own templates based of her recommendations. I was also intrigued to learn why these reviews are so important and to see it from an authors point of view.
I would highly recommend this book to any book lover. Let’s get to helping authors and readers alike!
The author pulled me in immediately by nailing the reason I -don’t- leave reviews (thinking that mine would be too simple or not clever enough). I have read many book reviews that were very long and involved. I have finished books and gotten to the “Please take the time to leave a review” page and been taken back to book report days and thought “Nope, no time for that.”
But I have gone to friends or family and said “Oh, you have to read this book, I stayed up half the night with it because I needed to see what happened next!” or “These characters were so amazing, I kept thinking about them, they were so real!” or the less frequent, but sadder “Wow, that was disappointing, there was so much droning on I thought I was going to fall asleep.” And Ms. Abbott explained very nicely that all of the above, can in fact be a useful review and it need not take forever to write or be complex.
Factually, there were some good explanations as to why reviews (even well written negative ones) are important, along with some interesting statistics and some neat templates to make reviewing easier. Personally I will probably just wing it, but I can see their value.
I now feel like I should (and more crucially could) leave reviews for all I read without losing my enjoyment of the book, maybe even enhancing it at times and leaving a guilt-free negative review if needed. Recommended to all readers but especially readers of indie authors, thanks to the author for my copy of this book which I’ve chosen (yay!) to review.
This book is a great tool for people that are considering writing reviews for the books they read. There is a lot of information on why and how to write a review in this book.
While I did not learn anything new from this book, it was very informative and I feel very useful. I began writing reviews after attending a book convention in 2014 and learned how valuable a review is to an author from that event. Since that time, I have written a review for every book I read. It helps me remember what I read, whether or not I enjoyed the book, and I also use it as a thank you to the author for the many hours they devoted to writing their book. In summary, that is what this book is saying. You gain much from writing reviews and also you help the authors.
I want to thank Allyson R Abbott for allowing me to read the advanced reader copy of this book. My opinion is my own, not influenced by receiving the ARC. #HowToWriteaSimpleBookReview #NetGalley
The author provides very helpful advice on how to write reviews for works of fiction and nonfiction. She points out the why behind leaving a review as well as the how to by providing some easy to follow templates which allow the reviews to figuratively write themselves. She also offers insights into blogging, independent publishing and reviewer rankings. Overall, this book achieves its purpose as a little how to that most readers will appreciate.J
