1Bad Spirits – a review by Rosemary Kenny
Boy when Kate Jones makes a mistake she sure makes a doozy of one!
I loved the realistic, feisty, desperate, engaging Kate and, thanks to D.V. Berkom’s excellent character-led plotline could easily picture myself as a ghostly participant, when our girl literally has to flee for her life, from her Mexican drug lord lover-turned-would-be-executioner and his murderous minions, after stealing money earmarked for payment to an even more ruthless cartel leader.
Tense gritty action is cleverly interspersed with ‘normal’ interludes, that exponentially ramp up the excitement that follows each one.
Will Kate survive?
Will the old man’s prediction come true?
Whom can she trust – and who will betray Kate and anyone who helps her?

Another great book by DV Berkom!!
Kate gets involved with Salazaar, head of one of the drug cartels in Mexico. She decides to take some of his money and escape. Everywhere she goes, it seems someone from the drug cartel is on her trail.Shootings and explosions. This is a short story with a lot of action to keep you very interested.
Bad Spirits is a novella that is described as a prequel to the Kate Jones Thriller series. In Bad Spirits, we learn that Kate fell in love with Salazar, a drug cartel lord in Mexico. She decided to leave him, and she steals a large amount of money to start a new life. Unfortunately for her, the money was meant to go to another, even more powerful drug lord named Anaya. Kate flees to the north. Everyone is after her. They all want their money, and they want vengeance. A handful of federal agents help her, but minimally. That’s about it for the plot.
This is described as “action-packed” and a “page turner” that leaves readers “on the edge of [my] seat.” True. Kate encounters one violent and dangerous challenge after another. For the lovers of action-suspense, the high-octane energy of this book may be sufficient. For me, I found that almost total lack of information about individual characters (including Kate), a thin plot other than getting shot at and chased, a disregard of the physical environment (for example, almost no attention is paid to water or the lack thereof as she travels through the Sonoran Desert) made this a less than satisfying read.
I have read action-suspense novels that did a much better job of filling us in on the characters and why they behave the way they do, as well as a more complex plot that tells a real story. This book isn’t one of them.
I loved this book. Just about every moment of reading was full of suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat. It is quite a story. I loved the character’s. The whole story was amazing and I will have to read more from this series.
This book is the first short story in a five part novella. It was a fun read and I plan on reading the next adventures of Kate Jones. Berkom does a wonderful job pulling you into the story. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes suspense and action packed reads.
