Dark Alpha’s Claim is the first in an exclusive new series from New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant! There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I am coming for you… My whole existence is based on taking what Death wants. Born to eliminate Fae guilty of unforgivable crimes, my reckless, … unforgivable crimes, my reckless, wild nature makes me the perfect assassin to carry out Death’s bidding. I’ve seen more sinister and violent dealings than anyone could ever imagine. But it was the sight of her face that stopped me cold. I’ve never wanted a woman-never mind a human-so badly; never felt my heart, hardened by death, burn brighter and hotter until it burst into flames. She is everything I desire. The kind of woman that compels you to stake your claim on her, to let the world know that she’s yours. A Reaper saving her life will only attract danger, but I vow to protect her at all costs from the Fae that hunt her, and keep safe the woman who has claimed me, body and soul.

Dark Alpha’s Claim (DAC) is a spin off from the Dark World Series, where we learn about the Reapers, a group of Dark and Light Fae that Death has brought together in order to dispatch their bad brethren from the world. The Reapers protect humans and work in the shadows as a team, forsaking a life and love of their own. Given an order from Death to kill mixed human/fae, the guys protest vehemently, but not before one of the them falls in lust/love with a half-human/Fae who doesn’t know what she is…
Babylon and Jordyn have sparks and steam, was it lust? Or love? Eh, either way their relationship status worked out in spades. Now, what I really loved how protective the entire gang was of Jordyn. These guys have forsaken any chance at an HEA for themselves, but didn’t hesitate the instant they recognized what was happening between Baylon and Jordyn and that made this novella so much more enjoyable! The different pov’s, turmoil, the banter, it all kept the story plugging along its merry way!
Grant’s Dark World Universe has so many characters and subplots that it can be hard to keep it all straight this many books in. I do like that I can typically jump into any one book and get a great romance, fighting action-be it magic, swords, dragons, etc., and have and HEA at the end. The progress on the overall storyline is always informative and I never feel totally lost on the major plot points. The small things I can easily pick up by popping back a book, or two. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I look forward to further stories on the rest of the team!
I am soooo kicking myself. I have devoured the Dark King Series. I knew of the Reapers. Yet silly me hadn’t bothered to check out the Reaper Series. The Dark Kings now makes more sense. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t need to read the Reapers to understand the Dark Kings, but it sure was enlightening.
The Reapers weren’t allowed to have relationships. They were not to expose themselves to the elves. They were only to have one time with a human. Things changed when Baylon, reaper, meets Jordyn, half-fae.
She is soon in danger for being a half-fae. Someone wants the all dead. Someone wants to call out the Reapers. Someone wants to call out Death, leader of the Reapers.
Dark Alpha’s Claim has lots of suspense as they discover who is behind it all, but fail to contain him. On to the next book.
When Baylon and the other six reapers are given an order to strike down all half fae in addition to executing justice on the Dark, to say they have reservations would be an understatement. As their leader, Cael, goes to Death to try and get answers, the rest of the Reapers search the city for their own. And then Baylon sees Jordyn on the steps of the Edinburgh library. With her arresting beauty and her obliviousness to its effects, he’s captivated and curious. But his choice to pursue her might mean their demise if Death chooses to repeat history and carry out the consequences of her Reapers choosing a mate.
There’s a big crossover to her other Dark Worlds books and a few references in the beginning might be a bit confusing, but pressing on soon gives way to a unique set of circumstances that make it stand alone enough to be fine as a series on its own. Baylon and Jordyn definitely have chemistry and are likable on their own, but there’s a bit of a lack of depth because the story is so short. The amount of history, connection, chemistry, background, and series outlay is quite immense to have been packed into the number of pages here but it seemed to be alright. I’m definitely in for the long haul because I know things will get better an better.
Jordyn has been obsessed with the fae her whole life and knows they are real. Being saved by Baylon thrusts her into this secret world and brings new light to her heritage.
Jordyn and Baylon have instant chemistry. Their forbidden love is captivating and full of emotional anguish. Grant really knows how to captivate readers with strong, compelling and emotional characters.
For the first book in this series this was really good. I do think it will be helpful if you have read the previous series because it will make it easier to understand who all the characters are. I am excited to see more of the Reapers and find out more about
Forbidden love, fae, action…the story doesn’t disappoint. A fairly fast paced story that is little hastily crafted but enjoyable. This series is little different from other series by the author.
