The smallest items can hold centuries of secrets…
Inara Erickson is exploring her deceased aunt’s island estate when she finds an elaborately stitched piece of fabric hidden in the house. As she peels back layer upon layer of the secrets it holds, Inara’s life becomes interwoven with that of Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl mysteriously driven from her home a century before. Through the stories Mei Lein tells in silk, Inara uncovers a tragic truth that will shake her family to its core — and force her to make an impossible choice.

This book is about the ugliness of our society when it comes to our treatment of people who are unlike us. The story is written in first person narrative of two characters, a young Chinese American women from the 1800’s and a Caucasian women of today. While the storylines have unlikely coincidences the book as a whole grabbed my imagination and entertained me.
I found this book hard to put down, very interesting as well as historically accurate. The characters are well developed, causing the reader to emotionally become involved in their stories.
I don’t have the words to express how this book touched my heart. Early 1900’s Seattle. Chinese are looked down upon and they are being expelled and put on ships….the awful story of what really happens is realized by a father and daughter and the father pushes his daughter over the side of the ship before it passes the San Juan islands…..he feels she has the best chance of making it to one of the islands and life. This is her story, and the story of a modern day woman in Seattle and a Professor at the University of Washington who come together to unravel a great mystery of a blue silk sleeve with extraordinary stitchings of scenes that is found under some stairs in an old home that the woman wants to turn into a bed and breakfast. An amazing tale of the Chinese daughter of yesteryear and the story of the well to do woman come together and includes this professor. I couldn’t put this book down!!!! My 86 yr old father read it after me and he said it actually made him tear up. If you like history, Seattle area, humanity, and a story that stays with you, then you need to read this one.
This book takes place in Seattle in 1886. I was not aware of the horrible bigotry that Americans had toward the Chinese living there. It reaffirms the love of family and that there were some people who don’t see color but a human being
Great read, wonderful characters, keeps you very involved in the story
