FIRST IN THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING CAT IN THE STACKS MYSTERY SERIES!Everyone in Athena, Mississippi, knows Charlie Harris, the good-natured librarian with a rescued Maine coon cat named Diesel that he walks on a leash. He’s returned to his hometown to immerse himself in books, but soon enough he’s entangled in a real-life thriller… A famous author of gory bestsellers and a former … gory bestsellers and a former classmate of Charlie’s, Godfrey Priest may be the pride of Athena, but Charlie remembers him as an arrogant, manipulative jerk—and he’s not the only one. Godfrey’s homecoming as a distinguished alumnus couldn’t possibly go worse: by lunch, he’s put a man in the hospital. By dinner, Godfrey’s dead.
Now it’s up to Charlie, with some help from Diesel, to paw through the town’s grudges and find the killer before an impatient deputy throws the book at the wrong person. But every last one of Charlie’s friends and co-workers had a score to settle with the nasty novelist. As if the murder wasn’t already purr-plexing enough…

A good read. The characters are well drawn – I want to read more stories about them. The author is obviously a car person, as am I- the personification of Diesel is spot on!
Typical James and that means)t is well worth reading. The combination of the elderly sisters and their animals works well.
This was a pleasant little mystery with a likable main character and his cat. I’m mot compelled to read all the others though I may at some time later.
A Favorite author, and I love her main characters, especially “Diesel”!
There’s always a bit of a mystery to solve, or characters woven into the story that are not always what they seem!
light and fun
Read all of the Cat Who books by Braun. This is similar but enough different to be very entertaining. Love the cat and the principal character’s occupation. References to older computers are correct. I lived through that technology.
Part of a delightful series in the cozy mystery genre. Especially enjoy Charlie & his cat & small town America.
This is a great series. Delightful. And I can sleep at night after reading.
Loved it
Cute and fun
Since I worked in a rare books collection, I could identify with the librarian. The cat made the story fun! An easy read.
Loved Diesel and would read another about him
This is a favorite series of mine. Interesting characters and good stories. It even makes me, a dog person, think I’d like to have a cat like Diesel who is an important character in the book. It really liked this book and have now read all the rest of the series and am waiting for the next one.
