Emily McCarthy is living in fear of a dark and dangerous past. A gifted mathematician, she is little more than a hollow, broken shell, trying desperately to make ends meet long enough to finish her degree.
Through an unlikely friendship with the aging, cantankerous owner of an old boxing gym, Em is thrown into the path of the most dangerous man that she has ever met.
Cormac “the Hurricane” … “the Hurricane” O’Connell is cut, tattooed and dangerous. He is a lethal weapon with no safety and everyone is waiting for the mis-fire. He’s never been knocked out before, but when he meet Em he falls, HARD. Unlike any other girl he’s ever met, she doesn’t want anything from him. Just being around her makes him want to be a better person.
They are polar opposites who were never meant to find each other, but some things are just worth the fight.
Warning This book contains adult language and subject matter, including some flashback scenes of abuse and rape, that may be disturbing for some readers. This book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

I really enjoyed this story by RJ Prescott, especially the cute way the Hero and heroine get together. A buff Hero who just wants to protect the heroine. I loved everything about this one!
She was the Sunshine in the eye of a hurricane…
Emily kept wondering why? After all she was the one running late today and I’m never late for work and I felt so terrible and on top of all that I was darn near frozen to boot.
However I quickly went about topping off cups of coffee before talking to one of my regular customers; but today he wasn’t sitting alone.
He was a mountain of a man and he made me extremely nervous; growing up in the kind of home I came from it didn’t take me long to develop certain traits.
The fact I’m still using those techniques even now; especially when I found myself in socially awkward situations.
As soon as my customers were gone;
the girl who worked the other section started braying at me because she couldn’t understand why a man like him was sitting in my section.
Honestly I didn’t have a clue who he was or even why he sat where he did and I really didn’t have time to care.
As much as I’ve enjoyed my job I have big and better plans for myself; which included graduating from a reputable school.
Even when I was terrified beyond belief and was desperate to be a wallflower I realized I couldn’t keep on living that way.
Because I’m hoping not to let me history to define my bright future.
My first night at my new job was almost my last because I seriously considered running for the hills.
Danny never explained what kind of business he owned but then again I never really thought to ask.
So here I am in a teeny tiny office which happens to be not that far from a room full of sweaty men beating on things and maybe even each other.
I couldn’t believe Cormac when he insisted that he was supposed to be walking me home, and I wasn’t having it.
Now I knew Danny meant well but seriously to give out my private information but then he played the old man card.
Wow talk about guilt tripping someone Danny just played me like some grand fiddle.
First of I’m not a good time girl; the party scene isn’t my thing but I was willing to give it a chance.
However I was done; my friend left me for the guy she liked and not knowing many other people I was ready to leave when I’d surprising heard him.
Cormac….
Its pretty sad when neither one of your parents care much beyond their own selfish desires.
And of course my dad was barely a footnote during my childhood then there’s my mom who had her own priorities that usually didn’t include me.
Sometimes the best messages don’t always make since until the right person delivers it then its like a total epiphany.
I knew I scared Emily when we first meet however I’ve noticed she’s slowly but surely she’s become less skittish and honestly I want her to know my true intentions because I’m not going anywhere.
Still I was worried that once I shared my sorrowful history with Cormac that he might look at me differently; even though he kept trying to reassure me that would never happen in a million years.
I should have known the minute my mom showed up for my match that she had some hidden agenda and once she realized I wasn’t falling for her act; she turned her attention towards someone else.
Nope… Just no way I’m not about to let the best woman in my life think she can shove me out the door.
Cormac knew I was still terrified my past wasn’t quite in the past as I’d had hoped but he came up with a brilliant idea.
And I’m so super happy with my new last name and the the gorgeous mountain of a man that came with it.
Unfortunately I’d been to excited and preoccupied that I left my guard down when the unthinkable happens.
But I’m not willing to give up because I know no matter what I can survive anything.

Sometimes you finish a book and you know right away that this is a book that you will read again and again. The hurricane is one of those books for me. I can’t wait to read the second book of this series! And hopefully the many other books that R.J. Prescott will write for this series and about the Irish guys.
The Hurricane is the first book writing by R.J. Prescott. After reading and loving this book so much, I really find it hard to believe that this is her first book. Because the story pulled me in from the first page and it hold my attention until the last page!
Emily McCarthy loves mathematic. It’s the one and only thing in her life that makes her happy and her only hope for a better life someday. After a terrible childhood and a dark past that she just wants to forget, Emily longs for solitude and peace. She gets this by living by herself and not making any friends. When Emily is not at the university, she’s hard at work in Daisy’s café. It’s in this café, where she works, that she meet Danny, an older man who isn’t put off by her silence and her shyness, he even takes an interest in her. Things stay the same for a while until Emily makes a new friend at university, something that will change her life forever. One of those changes is being asked by Danny to also work for him. What Emily didn’t know was that Danny is the owner of an boxing gym! A place filled with men and fighting! Something that fill her with fear but soon Emily realizes that she’s save there that nobody will ever hurt her when she’s with Danny and his boys. The guys boxing there are really friendly and have good hearts. Although, one of them, Cormac ‘the hurricane’ O’Connell makes her very nervous but for very different reasons!! He makes her feel things she has never felt before and he makes it very obvious to everyone that he wants Emily. He wants her very bad and if he can’t have her as his girlfriend, he will be just her friend. But that doesn’t mean that he will stop trying to convince Emily to take a chance with him because for O’Connelly there’s only girl and that’s Emily.
And soon both realize that alone they are broken but together they’re whole, perfect for each other. They were lost before but now they find a future together that looks beautiful. But just when they start a new life with each other, Emily’s past is coming back and this time it will be more dangerous than ever! Will O’Connelly lose Emily ‘his sunshine’ forever or not??
I loved both Emily and O’Connelly very, very much. Both were hurt in their childhood in different ways but together they filled the holes in their hearts. They were perfect together! I love how tender and kind O’Connely was with Emily and the bad boy side that he showed the outside world and his crazy side with the guys of the gym. But those two weren’t the only ones that I loved in this book. You have Danny, the owner of the boxing gym who’s also a father figure for the boys that are boxing in that gym and then you have all those great, Irish guys with their gentle hearts, their crazy side and their good bodies. Although they weren’t family through blood, they were family by heart. I love that in a book. I really want to read much more about them!
It isn’t the first time that I have read The Hurricane and I believe that one of the signs of a great book is that you experience all the feels as if it was the first time of reading. Oh My Word I just couldn’t put this book down…… again!! With The Fire coming later this year, I felt that was the perfect excuse to put my tbr list to one side and re-read this series. I’ve always said that this book is a top favourite of mine and reading this again has just confirmed that.
Cormac “the Hurricane” O’Connell – what I would give to have him in my corner! I loved seeing the change in him once he had found the woman of his dreams. Not only do we see Con want to change his ways out of the ring but in it too, and I loved how Emily was the motivation he needed to up his game and training program and aim to make his dreams come true!
Emily McCarthy has had the most horrific upbringing. Moving to London to escape her past and realise her ambitions was a huge step for her, but she’s scared and is forever looking over her shoulder. Meeting Con and his friends would have been daunting for anyone but I loved how quickly he, Danny and all the guys made her part of their family. Con didn’t want Em just to be a part of their group but had intentions of making a future with her. They have lots to work through before that could even be a possibility and I was really rooting for them both from the very beginning.
This book is emotional. There are scenes that were tough to read but were necessary and made me feel and understand exactly what was happening and the reasons behind decisions that were made. I smiled lots, laughed, had butterflies in my stomach and felt the angst too. This book had everything, and I hope I don’t leave it a few years before I pick it up again for another re-read.
My first read of this author and absolutely loved it! I cannot begin to tell you how much this story got to my heart with a scene in it I could unfortunately relate to. If this story teaches you one thing is that you never ever can give up and you have to keep going! True strength comes from the inside! Loved Con and Em together. Really liked the book, it made me laugh and cry. Definitely will read the follow-up to this one. Absolutely worth the read.
Emily is working double shifts to make money to finish her education. Waiting tables does not come easy as Emily is so shy she can barely speak to her customers, but one cantankerous old man breaches her silence and they become unlikely friends. Through this friendship he offers her a job as the bookkeeper at his gym. A job that requires her to hold her own among a group of rowdy young men. One of those men is up and coming fighter Cormac “The Hurricane” O’Connell. He has had his eye on this sweet quiet waitress and when she lands in his path he makes every effort to be her friend.
This novel really surprised me. The cover fooled me, making me think this novel would be all “romance”. It was more of a slow burn novel. These characters were from the wrong side of the tracks, so there was some coarse language, but the pace of the novel was slow and easy, just as you’d imagine a guy like O’Connell would have to be to approach a girl like Emily. He eased his way into her heart which made this novel different and kept me engaged.
There was also some seriousness to the reasons why Emily was so gun shy. She came from an abusive background, which made her falling for O’Connell kind of unrealistic, but again, the pace of the story made me overlook that fact. As she began to trust him, I did too. He wasn’t really the hard ass he portrayed himself to be.
Another aspect of this story that I really liked was her relationship to the gym owner Danny. Although a grumpy character he was really the father she always wanted and their little one on one scenes were sweet, really adding to the depth of Emily’s character. If you are looking for a sports romance with character depth and heart, this is a great fit. I have not read a novel by R.J. Prescott previously and didn’t have any expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised that The Hurricane had the depth and emotional impact of a Kristen Callihan or J.T. Geissinger novel. I really enjoyed this discovery and look forward to reading more.
Emily McCarthy is a girl with a damaged soul, that is riddled with haunting memories from her abusive and broken childhood. No matter how hard she tries to bury them, they are always there, lurking in the back of her mind, and causing her to constantly look over her shoulder for fear that they have finally caught up to her again. She tries her best to keep her past at bay by submersing herself into her work and studies, but she knows at some point she is going to have to come up for some air, and attempt to create some normalcy in her life…but the idea of opening herself up to others scares her beyond belief. When one of her customers at the cafe offers her a part time job at his gym, keeping the books, she is hesitant about taking it, the idea of working around a bunch of guys has her wanting to say no and flee the other direction. But she needs the money, and she wants to help him out, so she gives in and takes the position, never expecting it to change the course of her life, and give her the one thing her life has been missing for so long…love!
Cormac “the Hurricane” O’Connell submerses himself into his training, to no only keep his mind busy but also keep all of his demons at bay. He maintains a laser focus inside the ring, that is incomparable to his opponents, and is completely dedicated to his fighting career and doesn’t let anything stand in the way of him coming home with the win. He is the type of guy that isn’t afraid to go after what he wants, so, when he meets the gym’s new bookkeeper he immediately knows he wants her, and doesn’t hesitate to make that fact known to her, she however, wants nothing to do with him. He sees that as a challenge, and decides that he will stop at nothing to change her mind, even if it means just being her friend. She does something to him that he has never experienced with another woman, which only feeds his desire to want more from her… he just has to convince her that he’s worth the risk!
As soon as I read the synopsis for this book I knew it was going to be good, and I am happy to report that my instincts were correct, it actually exceeded my expectations!! The chemistry between these two was electric, each encounter they shared was fueled with power and intensity, and several of those times I swear I could literally feels the sparks between them jumping off the pages!! The story line was inventive, engaging, thought provoking, and packed with so much raw emotion that it took my breath away! Definitely one of those reads that will tap into your emotions, have you feeling the intensity of every word typed on the page, and guaranteed to linger with you long after the last page is turned!! Highly recommend you give this read a try, it is sure to take you on one truly exceptional literary escape, and have you looking at fighters in a whole new light!!
