“Until recently, I’d never believed that there could be such a thing as a truly gripping biography of George Washington . . . Well, I was wrong. I can’t recommend it highly enough—as history, as epic, and, not least, as entertainment.” —Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker

With a breadth and depth matched by no other one volume biography of George Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his adventurous early years, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America’s first president. In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow shatters forever the stereotype of George Washington as a stolid, unemotional figure and brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash Broadway musical Hamilton has sparked new interest in the Revolutionary War and the Founding Fathers. In addition to Alexander Hamilton, the production also features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr, Lafayette, and many more.

I never knew these things about George Washington. Spell bound!
I wish they taught history the way Ron Chernow writes it. Amazing eye opener and far more interesting than I ever imagined.
Facinating and thorough. Every bit as remarrkable as his better known “Hamilton.”
Fantastic! An informative look at the life of a great man
The best, most thorough, most informative book I have ever read on Washington. As good as Chernow’s biography of Hamilton was (and clearly Hamilton was VERY good), this one is better. A balanced account, my admiration of Washington, despite his shortcomings such as being a slaveholder, was strengthened. The book also provides interesting insights into Washington’s associates — Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, et al — as well as his relationship with Martha. An enjoyable and enlightening read. 5 stars.
So much personal information about WASHINGTON’s family and how he learned how to advance forward by reading books and relying on information from his older brother. Many times he had to make many decisions on the spot. He was known for his knowledge for such a young man.
No biographer writes as comprehensive a biography as Ron Chernow. I have read all of his biographies and would recommend all of them THE Washington one gave insight into this President’s life that gave me a renewed admiration for our first President. Excellent book!!!
