Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan … Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.
A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection—and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.

I loved this book and the rest in the series. I devoured all of them in about 3 days. Very entertaining and fast paced overall. Kricket is a strong character and adapts to her new world admirably and in stride. I definitely recommend.
Sorry to see the saga end. Hoping for a fourth book. Maybe someday…
A fun sequel that is 90% action movie and 10% romance – it’s truly non-stop (I think the main action takes place in only a couple days) but a great way to escape the world for a few hours!
A charged read!
She must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future…
Or if her fate is as immovable as the stars…
What an emotionally charged read! From the first page, the emotion and tension and love bleeds from the pages and you literally inhale it. These characters definitely make you feel, think and love hard.
The stuff that happens in this book especially the end will leave you aching for more.
Such beautiful writing. Brilliant and captivating story.
Full of different worlds, powers, trust, lies, war, survival and love.
Perfect for readers of sci fi romances.
Book one and two were great and hooked me into Kricket’s world. Book three took a huge nosedive into an inconsistent and troubling endorsement of emotionally abusive/possesive relationships storyline that came out of nowhere.
Fantastic! I enjoyed every single page of Sea of Stars. I could and put it down. The audible version was very well done, also! My heart broke when Kricket found out about Astrid and her Pan. I was completely engrossed with all of the characters. Amy Bartol does such an amazing job writing complex characters and she has such a fantastic imagination and talent for writing. I can not wait to start the 3rd Kricket book.
Now that Kricket Hollowell is on Ethar she is drawn into the politics of this foreign world. Kricket discovers that she has special abilities which allows her to see what will happen in the future. The five clans that reside on Ethar are on the verge of war. An Alameda prophecy tells of Kricket bringing the demise of one of the five clans while meaning the rise of another. Trey Allaris attempts to shield Kricket from the warring sides, encouraging Kricket to use her ability to see the future to change the future.
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first installment. Politics and battles are not my thing. I still love Kricket and her team of cavar’s. While I enjoy the relationship that has developed between Kricket and Trey I have some difficulties with them. Trey is very much an alpha male, he can be a bit of a bully toward Kricket, always calling her “mine” and telling her what to do. I like that Kricket fights against this way of thinking, she is her own person, and she fights against Trey’s caveman actions. Even though Kricket demands to maintain her individuality she still falls hard for Trey.
Kricket fights hard against being a pawn for either side in this war between the clans. She still looks for a way to return home. As Rafe, the clan Trey belongs to, is savagely attacked by the Alameeda, Trey and Kricket flee the city in hopes of escaping Kyon and his soldiers. By the end of this installment you discover that a rebellion led by Kricket’s presumed dead father is driving the war between the clans in the hopes that they annihilate one another. The rebellion is comprised of male cast-offs with special abilities of their own. Kricket has a sister who also meets all the requirements of the prophecy. As the story closes she trades her life for Trey’s and those of his family and finds herself a prisoner of Kyon.
Let’s talk about Amy Bartol’s amazing ability to write sexy and absolutely lovable bad guys. I truly disliked Kyon at the beginning, I mean grown men shouldn’t be blonde (kidding, kidding.. :)). Buuuuut now Kyon is seriously swoon. He is twisted and dark in the most perfect ways. & his love for Kricket is just… whew! The only downfall is a slightly unsatisfying ending which left me sobbing and book hungover.
Great world that parallels us yet remains in stark contrast to modern day. The storyline is very original. The author writes well – captivating you with characters you will love (and love to hate), situations that will excite you along with witty writing. Read the three book series. I’m hoping for a fourth!
I could not wait to pick this book up after reading Under Different Stars and I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I was looking forward to seeing more of Kricket and Trey and I got a bunch of mayhem. At least through half of this book I was just wondering where the hell Trey, Wayra, and Jax were. I was very upset that I wasn’t getting enough of the one thing I was looking forward to.
So with that being said, this second book was very action-packed and picked up right where the last book left off. I did like all the action scenes and kricket constantly trying to escape from everyone. And I …cannot … even tell you how many times Trey was there to save Kricket from Kyon. I mean the man is swoonworthy at its finest. I absolutely love him and he fights for kricket every step of the way doing everything in his power to keep her safe. I loved getting more from their growing relationship.
But. Yes, there is a but. I would have liked to have seen Kricket develop on her abilities a bit more. It just felt like this book was just half a story. Half of it takes place on the Ship of Skye and the other half of them on the run. I mean a war has just broken out. And on top of that, for her to be priestess who can see the future everyone in Rafe seems to think she’s the enemy and has no power of precognition and they all want to eliminate her. I mean, what the hell? Kricket is too strong, brave, and kind to have to endure all the things that she has since coming to Ethar.
There were things I liked about this book, but there were also things I didn’t like. This was definitely a step down from the first book which I fell in love with.
I loved the first book in this series, “Under Different Stars”. I was both excited and eager to start this book because the first book ended on a high. I immediately fell in love with the characters; all of them, even the bad guys. But this review isn’t for book one, it’s for book two.
This book is action-packed. You will not get a few pages apart without some type of activity taking place. Even after the crap that Kricket goes through in book one and through book two, she maintains her Chicago charm. All of the characters stay consistent, all of them equally as awesome in this book, as the last. Kricket is such an independent, free, and charismatic character you can’t help but root for her all the way through the book. It’s well written, well told, and beautifully put together. You continue to feel the connection between Kricket and every character she encounters as well as her connection with Trey.
The reason I gave it a 3 and not a 4 like it’s predecessor, is because within a few seconds of reading this book I became instantly disappointed. It didn’t end (or in this case, the beginning) as the story led you to believe at the end of book 1. Also, there was so much action and so little cheer that by the time the book ended you were mentally exhausted. Sometimes, I even found myself bored because it just seemed repetitive, which made me want to skim some of the book.
I will most certainly recommend this series thus far – already have. The characters, the world, the story is awesome and should be read. I’m looking forward to book 3 and hope I’m lucky enough to get an advanced copy of that one as well.
This is an incredible Book 2.
There is a ton of action that is made more exciting as one side has Magic & the other side has Marines. There is a sense of imbalance, but underdogs have a way of fighting hard which is impressive & creative — especially against someone who is singleminded & powerful.
I also really appreciate how language is used in this series. Both Rafian and English are used in a natural way. With vernacular used easily to convey that this is a “real” language with curses & idioms that have developed over time.
While a lot of time went into building the relationship of Trey & Kricket in book 1, they don’t lean on that to short-cut their feelings in book 2. They are continuing to get to know each other beyond “love” and have great interactions together to strengthen that connection.
The final thing I enjoy about this series is that the relationships with the other Cavars, and even Charisma & Trey’s brother Victus, are more than just props for the background. Kricket has specific relationships & ways of talking with the other people that gives them a life of their own.
This series is amazing! It showcases the author’s imagination. Her imagination is so much better than ours! Dive into it! You will love where this author takes you and the world she has created!
