True love is shrouded in secrets and lies in the enchanting second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when it becomes clear that the mysterious Magister will stop … mysterious Magister will stop at nothing to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the handsome, tortured Will and the devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal and fueled by revenge. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister knows their every move–and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa is drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa answers about who she really is? As their search leads to deadly peril, Tessa learns that secrets and lies can corrupt even the purest heart.

This has to be my favourite of all the Shadowhunters books.
This series is my favorite installment by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Jem and Will as parabatai so much their bond is amazing. I am in love with Tessa she is an amazing addition to their team. She is my favorite female wore-lock. Her love for Wll is so pure its amazing, but she also shows and amazing love with Jem that I love just as much. I also want to give Jessie credit for her sacrifice because she just gets looked over. Henry and Charlotte deserve recondition to they help out future shadow-hunters. Icaan’t forget to mention Magnus is in these too!!!!!!!!! There’s also a cute cat named Church
The start of the book made me smile with Jem and it was just a nice little scene and I loved those moments. Also, I loved the little moments she had with Will, I have never seen a love triangle work so well where you can see she has the same passion for both of them. So this book had a massive surprise for me and that was the fact someone was a traitor I totally didn’t see it coming and it broke my heart and I was just like why, why, why, but then you also feel sorry for this traitor. I don’t want to name her because spoiler, and if you haven’t read this book you may kill me. Being spoiled is the worse. Nate made an appearance in this book and my wish came true! YAY! For wishing shit would happen and the author makes it come true.
SIDE NOTE. OMG. Sophie and Gideon, they are the cutest ever, I kind of had a feeling they may get together and they did, woo I’m happy! They are cute and when Tessa says them in the hallways I was just like aww, and it was nice having that little meeting with Gideon and Tessa, shows that all the Lightwoods was not bad.
Another side note: Henry and Charlotte. OMG that scene where they have the heart to heart was just perfect. If you read you know what I mean and it is swoon worthy! I love it and it made me smile so much
Will. He opened up in this book more than he had ever before and it was so nice to see this other side of him when he opened up over his memories of his sister Ella and Cecily when he talks about them there is a different caring side. Obviously, when he reveals to Magnus what had happened when he was 12 my heart ached for him there. When he finally told that there was no curse the change him immediate was clear and it made the whole of his jerkiness make sense. I love Will more than ever in this book.
Jem. Okay. He asked Tessa to marry him (don’t know if that is a spoiler but sorry in advance) I think that’s kind of selfish if he is dying from this poison then why would he get that involved with someone when it’s just going to end in heartbreak. They don’t have hope for a cure so I don’t understand, (I’m sure if I remember isn’t Jem one of the silent brothers in mortal instruments? I could be wrong but I’m sure he was) So unless there is a cure or some way to save him then I forgive him for asking Tessa to marry him. They are cute together, but we already established that I also liked Tessa with Will so happy threesome I still say.
Tessa. Her character development during this was amazing, the fact she managed to start learning to fight and standing up to Will and his shittiness a little more, I felt she had come a long way compared to the first book and she wasn’t so afraid of her powers and she was more willing to use them to help the institute and help the people around her. Which for Tessa was a big step I felt she had more control of it this time. So Tessa and her development were really well. I felt really bad about her split feelings for Jem and Will and you can tell she doesn’t know who to choose and is really just stuck in the middle but doesn’t want to hurt either of them.
Cassandra is an amazingly brilliant writer and I was captivated throughout the whole series. I couldn’t put these books down once I started reading. What an amazing world. The characters, twists, turns and magic created kept me begging for more. WOW!!
Awesome trilogy, highly recommend! Love the Victorian era setting, and the demons, warlocks, vampires, etc. The romantic aspects of the book are great and don’t take away from the plot.
Love Cassandra Clare. This is a great series.
The world Cassandra Clare has created in both Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments is a very entertaining, interesting and intriguing world. Every time I read one of these books, I find myself stuck in that world, with those characters for weeks afterwards. This installment was no different. I felt drawn to Jem and Will the same as Tessa was, I love when a book can so fully draw you in and make you feel so in tune with it’s characters. My only regret is that I must wait until next year to read the next one.
