After reading the novella ‘Behind the wall’ of Jane Harvey-Berrick, I was in the mood for another one of her books. So I decided to read ‘Dangerous to know & love’. A book that I have wanted to read for a few months now but other books always got in the way. So now, was the perfect time for this story and I really loved it.
Jane Harvey-Berrick is a writer whose writing I really enjoy. The men in her books always have that something special. Something that fascinate me very much. They’re usually wild, passionate, angry and emotional but also loyal, gentle and lonely and deep down in their hearts looking for someone to love them for who they really are. And lucky for them and for us, they always find this someone special. Daniel Colton is definitely one of those wild boys.
Although you wouldn’t think so if you see Daniel Colton (with his many tattoos and his piercings) but one of his dreams is to go to college like a normal student and this year his dream came true but to succeed he will have to work hard, harder than most students there. Because Daniel has a secret, he’s deaf. For personal reasons, he doesn’t want people on the university to know this. What does he care that people may think that he’s arrogant for not responding to them? That just mean that they will leave him alone. That’s fine with him. But then he never suspected that he would meet Lisanne MacLaine, a girl who will change everything he ever thought about himself and his future forever.
Lisanne MacLaine loves music! She loves singing it, listening to it and playing it on instruments. Her life is just filled with music. If she had her way, she would just study music but her parents are more practical and they want her to also study something sensible so Lisanne also follows a business course (something that she really doesn’t like or even understand!). One of her fellow students in that business course is Daniel Colton. A boy with tattoos on his body and a pierced eyebrow. Daniel doesn’t only have a bad reputation around the university (thanks to his older brother Zef dealing drugs) but Daniel also has a ‘bad’ vibe around him, that makes him popular with the girls but not so much with the boys. Being a good girl, Lisanne doesn’t have any intention of connecting with Daniel. But then one assignment changes the way that Lisanne looks at Daniel. Slowly they’re getting to know each other, building a friendship and then something more. But love isn’t always easy. Because both never had a relationship before (for different reasons) and the people around them aren’t really happy with the fact that Daniel and Lisanne are falling for each other. And then you have Lisanne’s passion for music and Daniel who can’t share this passion with her. Can they really be together or are the problems they have to face too big for their love?
Daniel Colton is one of those bad boys that you want to hug to ease his pain and at the same time want to have sex with. I don’t know anyone who’s deaf so I found this story interesting, It isn’t easy living in a world where most people can hear. I love the way that Lisanne and Daniel interacted with each other, how through LIsanne Daniel would make new friends. How she helped him make contact with others. I had met Zef (Daniel’s older brother) in The Travelling series so I found it really enlightening to read about Zef’s past too.
If you love bad boys, you definitely have to give this story a try.
I finished this book last night. Where was I when this book came out? Anyway, this is one of my favourite books of 2015. Jane Harvey-Berrick does not fail to deliver. The main character’s “issue” was researched very well and it was an eye-opener for me. Made me understand how it feels to be one (no spoilers here from me). I love Daniel and Lisanne and the other characters in this book. I wish the author writes another book featuring the minor characters. Always a pleasure to read Jane’s books. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
Dangerous to Know & Love—the love story of Daniel and Lisanne—is not neat and tidy. It’s chaotic, raw, and unbidden. It is powerful and its characters fallible. They experience the lowest lows, the tenderest moments, and quiet triumphs, but the heart of it lies with Lisanne’s sassy, bossy, and bold love for her hot-headed, misunderstood, and devoted Daniel. Their passionate love is beautiful, messy, AND loud. Even when silent.
So much potential but just muddled execution. The multiple POV within a chapter were completely distracting. The main relationship was also problematic and toxic without enough character growth.
