“The alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) draws us back into her extraordinary Psy-Changeling world, a world torn between violence and peace, passion and ice… Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if … people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.
For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…
Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to suffocate her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling novels are some of my absolute favorite paranormals. I love the dynamics, suspense, and steam generated by the creative blend of changelings (shifters), psy, and, to a lesser extent, humans. Shield of Winter was an especially engaging read, pulling me in right from the beginning and hanging on even after I finished the book. Vasic and Ivy are the perfect example of why I love paranormal romance and this series in particular.
Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh – The Arrows are tasked with protecting the Empaths as they attempt to defeat the creeping sickness in the net. Vasic is a teleporter who is living on borrowed time. As the bionic arm device he had grafted on in the early testing phase is slowly killing him, he is hanging on to give the other members of the Arrow squad all the help he can to stabilize the crumbling Net. He didn’t count on falling in love. The three races of the world are in imminent danger as madness threatens to rip the Psy apart from the inside. One of the best books in the series!! Most of this series has more than its fair share of tragedy, but this one almost doesn’t have a happy ending! But this is a cool look at the steeliest alpha males ever. Wish I had an Arrow! lol! Happy Reading!!
Vasic is an Arrow who feels no emotions. Tasked with protecting an E-psy he quickly realizes she is awakening his emotions. Ivy Jane is an empath who had to rebuild her life after treatment for her broken silence. She now is tasked with finding a way to save the Net. She is also determined to save Vasic and make him realize how special he is.
“Flaws make us who we are, Ivy. Without them, we might as well be made of plas, featureless and indistinct. Never ever be ashamed of your flaws.”
I loved these two! They had a slow building relationship that was just perfect to me. Vasic has basically given up on his life. The Arrows, mainly Aden, put him in charge of the E’s hoping it will awaken his emotions again and make him want to live. I really loved how the Arrows were like a giant family and while they may still be silent they also protected each other.
“You’re my hope, Ivy, my beacon home on the darkest night.”
Ivy Jane has always had flawed silence. She doesn’t understand why until she is told she is an empath. Now she is determined to embrace her abilities and save as many people as she can, especially Vasic. I adored Ivy. She was such a sweet woman with a protective streak. I loved how she kept pushing Vasic to embrace his feelings and not to give up on life.
The focus of this book is on the E-psy and their fight to stop the infection in the PsyNet. The Psy are still struggling to deal with the fall of Silence, including a new pro-silence group, Silent Voices. While scared, quite the Psy are starting to embrace their new emotional freedom. I am very excited about where this plot is going. I can’t wait to see where Singh is going to take the plot line, especially since all the different races are finally starting to cooperate.
Amazing addition to the Psy-Changeling series. I fell in love with Vasic several novels ago and couldn’t be happier about his book. I can’t tell you how much I loved this one!
So much progress is happening now. I love the direction the author is taking this series and this particular couple is another favorite of mine. The hero is an Arrow which means he shows no emotion. To see the heroine slowly get him to open up to her and her affection had me riveted. It helped that she had such a great attitude towards life. I just really enjoyed them.
Love this series
Nalini Singh is an extremely talented world builder, she has created a world with compelling, multi layered characters that you can’t help but identify with and root for. The story is so riveting, that you get lost in it. The love story blends in so naturally that you don’t even know that it’s part of the main story. I can only admit that each book has drawn me deeper into her world and I wait excitedly for each new book in the series. This book is no different. The storyline is so involved that I can’t give details, I can only say you will regret not reading it because it is just that good.
Solid story! Took me a while to get through it. I found it hard to stay focused in some spots in the book, but readers learn a lot more about the E Designation (Psy empaths). There was also some page time with my favorite DarkRiver leopard alpha and his kick-ass mate and Psy Cardinal Empath, Sacha! (Cardinal designation means the powers cannot be measured, i.e. super powerful Psy)
Omg I have been in love with Vasic since he first appeared in this series and I am so freaking happy that he finally got his own book.
Vasic is totally different from the other characters in this series,he’s just so awesome and I hate what he had to go through just to find some happiness , but in the end everything he’s done has made him the man he is today , he’s a hero who doesn’t what the title because to him he does what is right and becomes he cares so deeply
I love Ivy , she’s fun and easy and she never judge Vasic for all the things he had to do, she excepted him and it was so great to watch them fall totally in love with each other, they got to experience new things together and in the end Vasic finally has something of his own , someone to love and cherish and who will do the same.
I loved getting to see Aden again, just love him , can’t wait for him to get his own book soon , also hoping to see more of Silver, im really curious about her.
I loved everything about this book andbi am so freaking happy that I got to read it :-), one thing that I thought was gonna happen was the whole Ming threat to Vasic but nothing ended up happening so I thought that was a liitte off but besides that I absolutely loved it. This series is a must read .
Love this series. Amazing characters that entwine through the series. Books are stand alone, the stories reveal different aspects as the books progress.
So going into this I had no desire to read about Vasic. I just figured I would just have to read it and get it over with. So imagine my surprise when I flipping loved this book! Vasic totally stole my heart. I don’t know what it was about the stone cold soldier but I just couldn’t get enough of him. He was just so damaged, but protective. I wanted to heal all his boo boos and kiss it better lol. I really loved Ivy too. Loved how strong she was and how much she fought for Vasic. I thought Vasic and Ivy together were very cute. I loved the plot too. The fall of the psynet as we have known it. I really enjoyed this book. On a side note……has anyone else notice that Ming LeBon acts like swiper the fox from Dora the explorer. I mean in every book he hatches these plans of evil to steal someone for power and then fails so fast and easy and just gives up like “OH man”
I mean in Kiss of Snow he is all “I will have Sienna Lauren and her power in my control because I am the greatest war mind in the psynet(*insert crazy villain laugh here*)” And what his his great plan he shows up at Sienna place and is calling out to her like ” Hey Sienna you need to like come with me okay? No okay bye” Then in this book he is all “I will overdose Vasic with Jaxs so I can control his power(*insert crazy evil laugh*) Then after only one try of sending a few men that fail you don’t hear from him again. I mean Ming is suppose to be so bad but that second someone says no he just like Okay! His attempts are so sad they are laughable and I always end up picturing him as Swiper the fox. Sorry just thought I would share that thought
