Earlier this summer, I decided to host a children’s book readathon in August 2018. All month long, we’re reading about a dozen books, then sharing reviews, interviews and feedback. This first week is ‘picture books’ and we voted on our top three books to read. Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss is one of the winners. I read the book as a kid and wrote a review a few years ago, but I re-read this week and am sharing a second review. If you’re interested in seeing all the book reviews or participating before 8/31, check out the main page on my blog.
Dr. Seuss has always been a favorite. This is the first time I’ve re-read one of his books since I’ve written and published a few of my own. I caught myself analyzing the book way too much while I was reading thinking some of the rhymes were stilted or forced. I would have changed a few words around and used a different rhyme choice. Then I slapped myself. This is such a fun book and I should sit back to enjoy it, not pick it apart! I rarely do that, so I’m not sure why it happened here… other than it’s such an amazing approach for helping kids (or adults!) deal with change in their life. I must have wanted to take it even further (farther? see, that’s why I shouldn’t judge!)… that’s when I got my head on straight and fell in love all over again with the book.
Life is hard. Bad things happen. You have to push past them or you’ll be unhappy and miss out. That’s the key message we need to understand from here. At graduation, or major life changes, kids worry that things might not work out. This is an opportunity to show how you learn from those fears and moments. I would love to listen to this one on audio just to hear all the noises and sounds of how the narrator thinks. The illustrations were fun and immersive. I definitely recommend this as a gift for those graduating from middle school or high school. It can also be read to younger kids to help them prepare.
This readathon is so much fun! I hope more folks will join. Thanks.
Love this book! Good for all ages!
A heart-warming, inspiring Seuss original.
I recommend Dr. Seuss book, Oh, the Places You’ll GO!, to read throughout your life to remind you of the wonders that await you over the rainbow, over the mountain, or over the horizon. The Doctor includes a motivation factor that as an adult, it makes you aware that if it is not for you…”Somehow you’ll escape all the waiting and staying. You’ll find the bright places where the Boom Bands are playing… So… get on your way!” This is a book to pick up to get you going on the path the was meant for you!. Happy Reading!.
Brilliant concept, inspiring and highly original!

“Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss may never make it to the keepsake trunk for our children! I bought this book for my mom’s retirement party. This story provides inspiration to ALL milestones in life. I highly recommend this book for your personal library. It also makes a wonderful gift!
