Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly). Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like … Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil–and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings–and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.more
When Valentine steals the second Mortal Instrument, an Inquisitor is sent in and she immediately focuses on Jace and refuses to listen to anything he says. She’s convinced that Jace is working with his father. Clary and the other Shadowhunters must do what they can to show her that he is being truthful while also hunting down Valentine. But is Jace being truthful?
This book starts off where the last ended and moves pretty quickly. We meet a new character, Maia, who is a member of Luke’s pack. She seems to really like Simon as well, but Simon is pretty stuck on Clary still. A situation that I’m still not real sure about. Are they a couple or not? Clary makes this all very confusing. Simon gets himself in trouble in this book and everything get settled by the end.
The most irritating issue I have is Clary. She’s very naive and jumps in to things way too quickly. She won’t listen to anyone when it’s obvious that she should. I find it very frustrating.
Jace is starting to grow on me. His character is evolving and he’s really starting to mature. There is still a lot for the reader to learn about him and Clary though. Hopefully her mother will come out of her coma soon and help explain things.
All in all it was a good book. Easy to read and fun.
Fabulous series. Had to read them all. Finished one on the plane. At the layover I had to go to the bookstore to buy the next in the series. Couldn’t wait to get home and buy it.
Cassandra Clare is an amazing mastermind. The Mortal Instruments are a work of art. I love Clace and Malec their couple chemistry is amazing. This world is full of werewolf’s, wore-locks, Seelie, vampires, and Mundanes. The series gets better as you go the Shadow world of the shadow-hunters is a mystical world full of adventure that has yet to disappoint.

Short and sweet so I can get to the next book. Wow City of Ashes was action packed and full of teenage angst. And I loved it! I feel this book focused a lot on Simon and all the changes that happen to him. I liked seeing the character growth in this book for Clary, Jace, Simon, Alec, and Izzy. I really didn’t like Maryse, I felt like she really let Jace down. Poor Jace it was like no one loved Jace. Everyone turned their back on him or let him down even Clary. All he wants is to be loved! Clary had it hard too. I understand where she was coming from. She loved Jace but can’t be with him and she loves Simon like a brother but he wants more and she feels like she needs to give that to him. She really had some emotional stuff to deal with. I felt like Jace really maned up in this book. He stepped up and did some great things especially for Simon. My hate for Valentine(or as I like to call him Paranormal Hitler) grew by leaps and bounds in this book. Cassandra Clare did a great job of writing a evil, psychopathic, bigot bad guy. I flew through this book in one day. I got nothing done today but feeding my children lol. I just couldn’t put it down. Great read. Now I am on to the next book and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Awesome series, highly recommend! Love the New York modern-day setting, and all the characters – Shadowhunters, demons, warlocks, werewolves, faeries, vampires, etc. The romantic aspects of the book are all interesting and don’t detract from the plot. This series is very hard to put down and will have you hooked from start to finish!
While I wasn’t too keen on the Natalie Moore narration on book one, I still wasn’t fond of her tones in book two. The characters still became muddled at times. I found the voices just didn’t match up with the characters also. I mean when I had to stop and go back to find out it was a male speaking part, but he sounded completely feminine then it’s slightly off-putting. I just don’t think Moore has the range to get to a male’s voice to sound like a male whether they were young or older. I still found Clary Fray to be whiner than my three-year-old as opposed to a great new Shadowhunter. I’m starting to think I just don’t like the girl.
The plot however was very interesting and that is what kept me going the whole through 13 disc. I mean I listened to it in the car, at the computer and I even borrowed my daughter Barbie CD Player to listen while I cooked.
The action was superbly designed, and the epic battle left you wanting more while satisfying my need for the deaths of many fictional characters. I enjoyed the new-found strength in Clary she does seem to be growing stronger and much more confident in her new-found power. While there were many times I wished I could throat punch her for what seem to be her never-ending obsession of male characters at pivotal moments. Seriously if a demon is trying to kill me, I’m gonna worry about saving my own booty, not worrying about my feelings that I’m trying to suppress about the most awkward love triangle.
But what can I say as much as Clary gets under my skin I still want to know more about the girl and what will become of her. The plot still has me sucked in because well can you say Holy cliffhanger.
So, expect an audiobook review for City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments book 3) Because someone nearby must be a book ahead of me and we are listening on the same schedule.
This is just as good as the first. Cassandra captured the images in mind as I read. Loving this series as I go along.

I absolutely love Cassandra Clare’s series, I’ve read them since I was a teen and whenever one comes out I purchase without question. They stories get crazier as they progress. It’s packed with adventure and it’s guaranteed to take you on a ride you’ll never forget.
