Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London’s Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he’ll face is a paper cut. But Peter’s prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter’s ability to speak with … with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

This is the first in the “Rivers of London Series” They are all fun, fast reads that hilariously combine modern police techniques with magic and vivid characters. Also trenchant commentary on the architecture of London and surrounds.
Love how this author brought magic to London. I really enjoy the characters and their interactions. First listened to this on Audiobooks and the narrator is Wonderful. As an American, it allowed me to hear this with a more British ear. Now on book four and will definitely continue this series. Also want to buy these in paperback and read as well. These are ‘keepers’ for me. Well done!!
Enjoyed that this was well written and used better vocabulary than most of my recent reads.
I got a kick out of this book and would have read the rest of them on KU, but I think they are a bit pricey for a series.
So “off the wall”! I really enjoy the whole series! Be prepared to be surprised and have fun with this.
A great blend of police procedural, quirky characters and gritty magic. I really liked this one.
Good read! Witchy, demons, ghosts and myth all together with a modern day detective investigator with a psychic bent.
This is a great book and series. Great characters. Fun plot.
First in the extremely interesting “Rivers of London” novels, this managed to miss some of the problems that most “first in a series” books have. It doesn’t plod, the author doesn’t hit you over the head with his world building, and I liked the 2 principle characters.
A young London constable learns there is magic and a branch of the police to deal with it. Enter the Goddess of the Thames, murder and mayhem. I listened to the audio book. Best narrator I’ve ever heard .
I love this book. I’ve loved all the others, and I can’t wait (actually I always point out to people that they can wait and they will) for the next one this November.
Really good book. The plot was slow in a few places, but ultimately a really good story.
Loved this book. So funny and sarcastic. Actually I’ve enjoyed the whole series.
I find I have been getting very tired of story lines based on magic, with werewolves and vampires, etc., etc. I was very surprised and pleased, then, to find this series of mysteries. Oh, there is magic, and all the rest, but the take on it all is different and fresh. Peter Grant is a very likeable character, with more strength of character than he gives himself credit for. I’m about to start the third book in the series, and hope it and all the subsequent books are consistent with the first two.
Fascinating, gritty take on Urban Fantasy magic in London. I love a good detective mystery and this was fun.
