A TIME FOR WAR… LOVE…
Amber enjoys her life of chaotic freedom and has no intention of falling in line just because a sexy-as-sin vampire insists on order. Unfortunately, he discovers she may be the only hope they have of finding his brother, and there’s no way he’s going to let her go—even if it means mating her to gain her cooperation. The two are as different as can be, yet when the dominant Kane and the untamed Amber finally unite to rescue Jase, they just may find that opposites really do attract…

Amber and Kane
I have loved this series from the beginning when Janie was a little girl. I enjoy reading these books and i am anxious to see how Janie saves the world. This was so funny with lots of great characters and action. Really is a Must Read series.
Wow, Kane is a closet hottie! He gives the appearance of being all brains and brawn, but the man is hot. He may not realize he feels things as openly or the way others do, however Kane does in fact feel very deeply. It just takes him a little time to recognize it. He’s used to applying science and logic to everything, so all the feelings he develops for Amber come as a surprise to him.
Amber was extremely naive, and her constant denial of the circumstances and who she was got on my nerves. I apparently have no patience for pacifists, which is a little unsettling but I figure I can deal. I grew to like Amber’s character much more once she accepted her gifts and began working to understand them. She and Kane were actually a great couple and I liked them both very much at the end.
I wasn’t a fan of Amber’s grandmother Hilde. I think her character was supposed to be written as humorous but she came across as a horny hypocrite. The Janie, Zane and Kalin storyline is heating up and I can’t wait to see if it plays out the way I am hoping. Jase broke my heart. I have much love for his character and I’m anxious to get to his book so I see how his story plays out. The man deserves some serious happiness after what all he’s been through.
UPDATE: I finally went back and read the backlist. Janie’s story has been awesome all along. Am dying for her book.
4.5 Stars
After I read Consumed earlier this year, I told myself I would go and read the backlist on this series. Now, reading this latest installment, I am renewing my pledge to do just that. This series is really cool. It’s got great world-building with continuing threads that span from book to book. Yet, Rebecca Zanetti makes it easy to jump in as a new reader. She manages to fill you in with everything that’s been happening in a way that seamlessly folds into the story. It’s good stuff.
This is Kane’s love story. He is the analytical, brilliant adviser and brother to the king of the vampire people. Their youngest brother, Jase, is being held captive by the demons and he has a plan to rescue him. It requires finding and drafting a demon destroyer. And wouldn’t you just know that one is broadcasting her abilities loud and clear??
Amber has no idea of what she is. In fact, she is an adamant pacifist. But Kane isn’t the only one picking up her unintentional signal. The demons are after her too –and once the danger becomes obvious, she throws her lot in with Kane and agrees to help him.
I can’t say I was in love with Amber as a heroine. Her tree-hugging sensibilities were hard for me to connect with. And I felt like a little too fine a point was put on her forcing her veganism and other preferences on everyone else. But that was probably the only thing I didn’t enjoy about the book. I liked Kane… his intensity and his honesty. I thought the sexual tension was hot and so was the bedroom action.
The secondary stories were great. I was really into the sidestory with Jase… and even more wrapped up in what is happening with young Janie and the two men in her life. Clearly, this has been an arc percolating for a long time. And when the payoff comes, that book is going to rock my socks off. I’m feeling like Zane is the obvious choice for her, but part of me carries a little hope for Kalin. (Is that wrong?) Honestly, their history is the biggest reason I want to go back and read the older books.
There are plenty of action and battle scenes. Plenty of scheming and machinations. It’s all layered in with the romance and the b- and c-plots. I love books that are intricate in this way. Especially when the author can pull it all off without being confusing. (Which she totally does.)
Well done.
Rating: B+
I am new to the Dark Protectors series. This is my 1st read through. And I gotta say they are amazing. Rebecca Zenetti writes her books so well that I completely lose track of the world around me. This is the 5th book in the series and after each one I have immediately started the next one. Kane and Amber are so good for each other. The book takes them through so many emotions that lead to an amazing pair. I highly recommend this book.
I love this series and look forward to every book.
Love this series. Couldn’t wait for the next book.
Great author. This book is from an awesome series. Great world building, the most well built characters. Definitely a page turner with steamy romance. It pools you in into their world of action, love and paranormal.
Good but, not as great as other books in the series
4.5 stars
Oh Kane. I just knew when he fell it would confuse him more than any of the other Kayrs brothers. With his logic and science, having to deal with something that’s felt and not seen and proven is very hard for him.
Amber is great for Kane. She refuses to settle for anything but 100% from him. While Amber and Kane cannot deny their chemistry, it’s not logical so Kane tries to deny that it means anything. But what it really comes down to is he’s afraid of getting hurt. Same with Amber. She might say she holds Kane at arm’s length because he won’t admit his feelings, but she’s just as afraid as he seems to be.
On top of having to deal with all those pesky feelings, Amber and Kane are trying to find Jase Kayrs. Kane’s brother was taken by the demons years ago and Amber is the only Demon Destroyer the Kingdom has come across in too many years to count. Amber was not even aware of Vampires, Witches, or that she is a powerful Destroyer so she has to learn how to use her gift before much can be done to help Jase.
Throughout this story, we are shown Jase and given a look into the terrible things he’s being subjected to and the turmoil it causes. My heart just breaks for him and his situation. While we know how close his brothers are to finding and saving him, he has no clue if they even know he’s alive. Plus, he has a female demon who is “helping” him while also trying to seduce him.
As always, we get bits and pieces of Janie and her boys…although they’re all quite grown up now. I’ll admit, I still often see Janie as a very young girl in pigtails instead of the fully grown and powerful woman she has become. I believe Zane and Kalin often make the same mistake, which has helped Janie in this book.
I loved the heat and passion between Kane and Amber in this story. I am delighted Amber questions her place because of her limited education, and then comes to terms with the fact not one of the “geniuses” around her give two figs about that. They teach her that a diploma does not measure one’s intellect. She teaches Kane that there’s more to life than science and intelligence. Those warm fuzzies kept coming at me throughout this whole book.
Although I don’t believe the next book deals with Jase getting his HEA, I’m looking forward to the day he heals. To the extent that anyone can heal after such an ordeal. Even more than Jase’s story, I cannot wait to really meet Zane. I know it will come eventually, and I have a feeling it will be epic!

Thought provoking
Kane is still working on a cure for the virus, when he’s sent off to intercept a demon destroyer. When he meets her though, she’s nothing how he thought she would be. However, something is off and he can’t put his finger on what it is exactly.
Amber’s grandmother is in the hospital and she’s taken an extra job waitressing to get the money to cover the expenses incurred. However, some sexy guy keeps staring at her and when they finally talk she thinks he’s crazy because he’s spouting about demons having his brother What’s a girl to do?
Great story and has quite literally sucked me in to the point, I don’t want to read anything else until I know what is going to happen to everyone I’ve come to adore Looking forward to more!
Kane Kayrs blames himself for his brother Jase’s abduction by Demons. Six years later they are still no closer to finding him and time is running out. Their only hope is a demonslayer who are rare and one has just popped up on the radar, Kane assigns himself to the duty of bringing her in.
An intellect, Kane could not have envisioned the woman who has the ability to save his brother, she is far different than what he had hoped. Amber Freebird is blonde, beautiful, vegan, a pacifist, and utterly clueless when it comes to her ability. Kane wants action now and doesn’t have the patience to train her, he does have a logical strategy at getting the results he needs, to mate her.
It wasn’t the lack of romance that had Amber turning Kane down, it was his inability to see that love exists. Amber won’t marry or mate a man who won’t love her, especially when it means eternity. It goes against every belief she has to hurt another, but when her grandmother lands in the hands of the demons, Amber makes a promise to Kane to help. Kane though is biding his time, he plans to take Amber as his mate, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
I’ve enjoyed this series so far, but Provoked was the first book that I actually loved. Kane was such a smart, sexy, train wreck when it came to Amber and it was amazing. It’s always so much fun watching an alpha male fall for woman.
Not only was Kane and Amber’s romance wasn’t the only good thing, the progression on the overall storyline is getting very interesting. Although we do make another time jump, about 4 years, which I’m not the biggest fan of, but I definitely see why it’s necessary. I can’t wait to read the next book!
Kane is sent to retrieve Amber Freebird, a demon destroyer. He quickly realized that she doesn’t know anything about the supernatural world or her abilities. Kane also realizes he is attracted to her. They make a deal of him helping save her grandma from the demons and she will help him locate Jace.
I really enjoyed these two. Amber was smart, sassy, and a pacifist. She is extremely attracted to Kane but refuses him multiple times because he doesn’t believe in love. I loved that she always stood up to him because he really needs someone who will do that. Kane was so stubborn throughout the whole book because he refused to admit his feelings. When he finally did he didn’t hold back though. Amber’s abilities were quite fascinating and I can’t wait to see how they will play into the future books.
We also get Jace’s perspective in this book, which is heartbreaking. I really hope he can recover from all the damage the demons did to him.
Ok, this was much better. I like the Kayrs brothers stories better than the secondary character stories. Amber was funny and amusing and her and Kane’s story was certainly entertaining. I’m liking the storyline and plots too. Getting into the whole world building that the author is creating too.
Rebecca Zanetti has done it again. This book was AMAZINGGGGG! I love this series so much. These books need to be read in order as they all tie together building on the plot and paranormal world. So this book picks up 4 years after Consumed. Jase has been kidnapped and tortured by the demon nation. Everyone is worried what 4 years with the demons will do to Jase if he lives. Kane Kayrs, the smart one, has located a demon destroyer named Amber. Only she doesn’t know what she is, what he is, what demons are or how to use her powers.
