“Dorothy Gilman is one of those authors that we would like to lock in a tower and command to produce a novel at least every three months. To get a new one is to become ecstatic, to finish it is to grieve, and to wait for the next one is torment!”—Chattanooga Times

I simply love Dorothy Gilman. She has an absolutely lovely way with language and her characters are always so human yet somehow also just that little bit more – more conscientious, more thoughtful, more thought, more human – than the people one encounters in everyday life… Perhaps I’m a relic, but I love that her books are stories – not plot contrivances designed to deliver violence or sex. There are always pertinent and relevant life lessons tucked away inside her dialogue, but they’re delivered with such a deft hand and in such cheeky and also somehow casual ways that they never feel like lessons until you finish reading their sentences – then the simple truths they uncover just jump out at you. I miss the days when stories could be simple yet thoroughly complex through nothing more than the exigencies of human interaction. She manages to remind me of days gone by without waxing sentimental or getting maudlin. Madame Karitska is a worthy successor to the delightful Mrs. Pollifax, and if you haven’t yet met either, you simply must resolve that with all expediency…
Who doesn’t love the stories written by the late, Dorothy Gilman?! This story is set in a fictional New Jersey/New York city and neighborhood where a once countess sets up shop to so ”readings”. Meet her wonderful, wacky neighbors, her regular and irregular client’s and even get involved with helping the local police solves cases.
It was more like a series of short scenes than a novel. Well written, just not my thing.
I like the author’s style. This is a good book, but I prefer her Mrs Pollifax series.
Ms. Gilman’s single female characters usually handle situations with observation and innovation. This book is no exception.
I love Dorothy Gilman; the Pollifax books are my favoriite. I wasn’t sure i’d like this book but i did. It is more episodic than most mysteries, but there is often a thread running underneath. And i appreciate Gilman’s wisdom that she shares thru her strong female characters. Looking forward to the second in the series.
I always feel so bereft that Ms. Gilman died of Alzheimer’s. Her legacy lives on in these lovely books.
This book was a quick read giving examples of psychic powers. All examples were credible and I very much enjoyed their presentation.
I always enjoy Dorothy Gilman and this book was a lot of fun.
Love. Love, Love this book! The characters makes you want to join their circle. Enjoyed the book all the way through and so sad when it came to an end. I have to say that all the books by this author have a special place in my heart (and library).
Dorothy Gilman’s Books are all page turners! I very much enjoy reading her Countess” books.
Wish there were more.
The Countess in the title is truly clairvoyant. She uses her abilities to help the police. Dorothy Gilman has never written a bad book. Aside from the Mrs Pollifaxes, she writes lovely independent books with great characters, good plots and always gives you something to think about. Highly recommended.
Thoroughly enjoyable light reading
Wonderful characters!! Funny and witty
I have read this book several times over the yrs. When I saw the chance to get it for my ereader, I immediately bought it. Dorothy Gilman is a wonderful writer and I have read all if her books. If you want a light-hearted writer but a book that keeps yr interest buy her books.
This is a two book series – sigh……….so much fun finding some lighthearted and entertaining to read.
I wish there were more in this series….
This is the first Gilman book I’ve read in years and I wonder why it took me so long to get back to her. Easy and quick; thoroughly enjoyable. I’ll definitely read the next in the series. I love the way she develops her characters.
Just as much fun as tagging along on a Pollifax adventure
This is a fun little story, as are all of Dorothy Gilman’s mysteries. I’d recommend this one for anyone who enjoys cozy-style mysteries. Do try the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries also.
