If one must flirt…flirt with danger. Lessons in the art of espionage aboard Mademoiselle Geraldine’s floating dirigible have become tedious without Sophronia’s sweet sootie Soap nearby. She would much rather be using her skills to thwart the dastardly Picklemen, yet her concerns about their wicked intentions are ignored, and now she’s not sure whom to trust. What does the brusque werewolf dewan … brusque werewolf dewan know? On whose side is the ever-stylish vampire Lord Akeldama? Only one thing is certain: a large-scale plot is under way, and when it comes to fruition, Sophronia must be ready to save her friends, her school, and all of London from disaster–in decidedly dramatic fashion, of course. What will become of our proper young heroine when she puts her years of training to the test? Manners & Mutiny by Gail Carriger
The 4th and final book in the Finishing School series. YA historical steampunk. Should be read as part of the series.
Sophronia’s lessons and adventures continue at the disguised finishing school. Until things turn very real and she’s put to the test of her espionage skills.
Amazing and adventurous. Easy reading and fun. Loved this series so much.
Sophronia really shows her strengths and knowledge in the last book of this delightful series. She’s quick on her feet and determined to make right what has gone wrong. She has learned quite a bit at finishing school and has grown up a whole lot. So have her friends. Dimity and Agatha help Sophronia out a lot throughout the book and do it with grace and dignity. Even Monique shows she cares, in her on unique way, what happens to Sophronia. I enjoyed seeing the two of them work together. Dimity’s brother, Pillover, is probably the character who grew the most throughout the series. He is smart and a true evil genius.
Like the others, this book is non-stop action from the beginning. There were even a few times that I worried about Sophronia. Will she make it out or not? Soap and she make the end of the book intriguing and although I didn’t love the series, I did like it enough to be curious about another series centered on Sophronia and Soap and the work they do for the dewan. Her first assignment sounds like a fun one with many possibilities.
This series a full of great characters, wonderful world building and intriguing plots. I highly recommend reading it if you like mechanical stuff and steampunk. This was my first steampunk series and I’ll definitely be looking for more. I’ll also be reading more by Gail Carriger. She’s a great story teller.
Hilarious and original – a steampunk novel for all ages.
Manners and Mutiny is the fourth and final book in the Finishing School Series. This world is a blend of paranormal, steampunk, and some romance. I love this world so much! It’s like someone sat down and took everything that I love and put it all together. Sophronia has now been at Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing School for Girls of Quality for a little while.
This is a wonderful conclusion novel for this series. I have to say that I want so much more about these characters, because I have fell in love with them all. I really hope that we will be getting more stories about these characters in the future. Yes some of them appear in the other series. I have to say that this is the most action packed book in this series and I found myself not wanting to put it down. I loved how things wrapped up and the character still grow and you found out some back story you did not know before. Gail makes her characters feel real, they express real feelings and emotions as a real person would feel. Due to the events from the previous books are now a lovely trio are still dealing with those outcomes. I love when an author is able to accomplish this because it makes the characters feel more relatable, and shows that the characters have layers and are not robots. I found myself rooting for them and laughing at some of the scenes. All in all these books always make me feel better after reading them.
I am sorry there is not much I can say about the plot without taking the chance of spoiling things. So I am going to leave you with a few quotes.
“A girl wearing a wicker chicken and playing the harp bopped me with a book about buns and then stuffed me under a piano.”
“We’re a team like tea and milk, or cake and custard, or pork and apple.”
“Sophronia felt bound to object. “I, for one, should prefer not to shoot at someone I like.”
“Admirable scruples, Miss Temminnick. Get over them. For you will do it anyway.”
“Please don’t. When you think about things, Sophronia, they only get more complicated. This thing between us could be so very easy, if you let it.”
This is a great series. It’s fun, clean and has adventure.
I adored Gail Carriger’s Soulless series. Haven’t really loved some of her others, but I picked up Manners and Mutiny after having been away from her writing for a few years. I found this book incredibly enjoyable. It was light, fun, engaging and the perfect distraction. This is the final book of there series, I’d recommend reading them in order. Although, I don’t think I read the second book. It could be read as a standalone-you would just need to get acclimated to the steampunk world where the novel takes place.
Love the entire steam punk series.
