Whoever said blood is thicker than water hasn’t met the Harrington family.
New York royalty, the Harrington family are old money with magic coursing through their entitled veins. The only thing the Harringtons care less about than each other…is the law.
When Lester dies unexpectedly, his considerable estate is set to pass to his surviving heirs. But the coroner, Kasey Chase, has ruled Lester’s … coroner, Kasey Chase, has ruled Lester’s death a homicide, sparking a family feud that sees the Harrington heirs turn on each other in a lethal struggle where the only prize for second place is death.
With unlimited resources and a callous disregard for human life, the Harringtons have to be stopped before the city pays the price for their petty war. Caught in the middle, Kasey is left fighting for her life. Fortunately, she’s been hiding a secret of her own.
Kasey is a witch.

Whew!
This book starts off with a bang and rarely lets you breathe. Kasey is being chased by vampires who want the “tome” she took so she could learn about her ancestors. In order to do that she had to pass through the Sidhe’s winter court. Her experience there was truly magnificent and magical. Mr. Stokes had great vision leading us through it. But that was just the beginning. There is so much excitement all throughout this whole book. Kasey has to save New York all over again. It wasn’t enough that she fought Akihiro to save New York in her previous story. No, this time she has to battle a slew of vampires ready to attack the people plus get rid of Rhain, King of the Feudal Court. I won’t spoil anything for you but be warned it gets real bloody. I must also say this that there are some loose ends that need tied up but have no fear, Mr. Stokes tells us exactly where to find them. I will certainly be looking for them in the near future and in his newsletters and on his web page and in his upcoming books. Whew!
I so enjoy Kasey’s character! I’m glad Samuel Stokes decided to write another story with her. In this book, there is lots of action as Kasey gets caught in the crossfire, literally, after performing an autopsy that proved the victim’s death was a murder. But who was the murderer? This mystery kept looming as each suspect was eliminated (literally). Too many close calls had Kasey fighting for her life. Samuel Stokes descriptions of the action scenes had me riveted to the pages rooting for Kasey all the way. I especially liked the epilogue. I know what it’s like to work in an office and have your food stolen out of the fridge. Kasey handled it superbly! Yessss!
Loved this book .
As with ALL the Kasey Chase books, it was a pleasure to read.
Always plenty of action and adventure but good to get some background to her story.
Great read.
This is a review for A Date with Death by S.C. Stokes If any of you had a chance to see the movie mystery Knives Out this past fall you will notice a similarity with the crazy Harrington family and the old mansion setting. Lester the family patriarch has died leaving a large estate and a lot of money, as in billions, to his heirs. Kasey Chase the city coroner is ordered to investigate to see if it was a natural death or homicide. As Kasey arrives to the old estate she is sworn to secrecy by blood oath not to divulge any information or happenings at the estate, because they are all witches, but so is Kasey and the family does not know. There is a major twist at the reading of the will that shocked me and just made me roar with laughter at wills stipulation. I just love it. Needless to say all h**l breaks loose and the story just goes nuts with twist and turns everywhere. It’s a fun exciting read, don’t miss it. I was given a copy of A Date with Death for free in exchange for an honest review.
When the wealthy patriarch dies, a recently updated will is read which leads to magic-wielding siblings duking it out. Kasey Chase, a medical examiner, is caught in the crosshairs. Mention of John Ainsley opened and closed the tale; he got what he deserved at the end.
Thank you for proofreading; I found no glaring errors.
Really enjoyable story, I’m going to look for more.
A Date With Death
(Conjuring a Coroner #0)
by S.C. Stokes
Writing and copy editing are good. However that’s the best I can say for it.
It really feels like a ‘I need to hack out a quick prequel that I can sell for free’, and that little care was spent on plot or plotting.
The battle scenes, which take up much of the book, don’t feel authentic – and sure don’t feel like they need magic. It feels like the author had a plot outline for a thriller that would have involved grenade launchers, and other heavy infantry weapons – and repurposed it for magic.
Honestly, the magic here detracted from the already not entirely believable plot.
Also. One guy sole owner of a Fortune 100 (or 50?) company is unlikely. When he’s ‘old money’, not e.g. Elon Musk, it becomes even more improbable.
That he can get away with totally ignoring the law enforcement agencies and just do whatever he wants, really, really doesn’t work.
If this was the first book of this author’s I’d read, I’d strike them from my reading list and never even look at another book of theirs.
This is a HORRIBLE intro to the series.
It was alright, but not what I’m looking for if you’re looking for a series to get into. Not enough fore-shadowing to make me want to get any other books from the series.
