Lionel and David have been in the background of all the books as we raced to find missing children, figure out who the evil men are, and ultimately bring them to justice. In book 3, the team was close to catching the ring leaders, but they managed to slip away. Now the chase is own, and David and Lionel are more determined than ever to bring these evil men to justice.
Throughout the books there has always been chemistry and underlying tension between lovable Lionel and business-minded David. The two could not be more different, or perfect for each other. But Lionel has a made a vow of celibacy that he has stuck too for over 4 years and David is finally ready to put an end to it…but can he break through the walls Lionel has erected?
As we read the book, we realize that walls were put in place for a reason, and that Lionel, loveable, lives on his own terms Lionel, has a terrible secret that will change everything. I cried. I truly cried and my heart broke as I learned Lionel’s tale.
Ms. Farmer has not held any punches in this series, and has shown us in each book how dangerous it was to be a gay man in the 1800s, but this story hit so much harder, it hurt my heart. I am not going to spoil the story for you, but what I will say is that this one is emotional, and that David and Lionel’s journey will not be an easy one. The truths that come out during the course of the book will break your heart.
By the end of the book Ms. Farmer manages to put our hearts somewhat back together, but my heart will not be the same. The author’s note at the end of the book was even more heart wrenchingly painful to read. Love is Love….and this book once again, shows what a terribly difficult road some have had to show their love. Lionel and David’s love gets my recommendation, and it is one I will not soon forget. I highly recommend the entire series.
Finally David and Lionel’s turn at happiness.
David Wirth is the man to give a voice to the voiceless. Those who can’t defend themselves. Powerful people always take advantage of others and children are no exception.
Lionel Mercer is a collector of juicy details for use against the powerful and privileged.
Two men, a formidable team in their own right, are now faced with life changing decisions. The secrets you keep have a way of creeping back up.
The child kidnapping ring has proven to be both painful and a personal determination. Lionel and David have made room for everything else. Can they make room for each other?
Fall in love with a MM Victorian romance in book 4, just as we fall in love with this couple.

Well, we finally get the story of David and Lionel. In previous books, I thought Lionel to be a fun-loving, who gives a damn, feeling good is always my aim kind of guy. And he is but there is a whole lot more to him than meets the eye. He is brought low by a man who used people to his own gain. I don’t want to give too much away so I will just leave it at that. The slow burn romance between David and Lionel is beautiful. Not all relationships are about sex but instead they are deep relationships of feelings and friendship. Plus, this story has quite a bit of action. Did they finally capture the kidnappers? Read and see.

This is the fourth book in this brilliant series & the ongoing thread of the child kidnapping ring reaches its conclusion, it’s also the David & Lionels’ story which I’ve been impatiently awaiting since book one, often an eagerly awaited book doesn’t live up to expectations but this book surpassed my expectations. An emotional roller coaster that I read in two sittings, as I found it almost impossible to put down. I’d loved David & Lionel in earlier books but they came into their own especially Lionel who was so very much more than the social butterfly. I loved the electrifying chemistry between the pair, which has been there from the beginning & my heart broke for them several times throughout the book. One issue is left open for the reader to decide how it’s resolved & I know which scenario I personally determined would happen. A very well written enthralling read, which I loved even though it had me sobbing, laughing & crying NO! on several occasions
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I have enjoyed this series and this story is as well written as all of the others. David and Lionel have not acted on their mutual feelings for each other, much to David’s disappointment. Lionel has his reasons that are revealed in this story. The law is slowly closing in on the three nobles who were stealing children for the sex trade industry. There are a lot of raw emotions between David and Lionel that make you feel sorry for the torment they are enduring. There is a lot of action in this book which adds to the story. I would highly recommend it as a great read.

David Wirth has spent his law career defending others from injustice and seeking to prove his own worth despite his humble beginnings. His latest case is the most important of his career, hunting down the three powerful noblemen responsible for running a child kidnapping ring and bringing them to justice. David is usually all business, but lately the intense tension between himself and his business partner, Lionel Mercer, is reaching a boiling point. Lionel may not have a law degree, but the secrets and connections he has gathered over the years make him invaluable. But Lionel keeps his own secrets closely guarded, even from David, his dearest friend.
As secrets inevitably come to light, David and Lionel are faced with nearly insurmountable challenges and, especially with David’s old partner helping with the investigation, resentments that may not be overcome.
I’ve been wondering what was going on between these two for the whole series. It was nice to see them both finally being honest and vulnerable with each other and I liked how supportive they were of each other. I’d like to think they have a long and happy future together and I will look forward to Niall’s story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
