Her father’s plan which was now hers was to take the clan to a remote area far, far away up in the Highlands where they would not be disturbed by war. Isla was as intelligent as she was beautiful. She is the epitome of a highland warrioress. She had the clan’s approval, faith and trust. She would not let them down. Finlay and Isla had the same thing in common. A hatred of the English noblemen who were exterminating their people, destroying everything in their path systematically as they traveled. Also, they were both wanted by a gluttonous despot noble Lord Henry. He wanted Finlay dead and wanted Isla as his bride. Henry was a horrible man, worthless as a leader and a disappointment to his father the Earl. Henry was going insane abandoning the King’s mission in order to pursue Isla and to slaughter what was left of her clan. Now that Finlay was by Isla side and her clan had accepted him as one of their own, he would not let her or their clan down. There was an attraction between Finlay and Isla that they tried to deny but it was impossible. It caused Isla no end of confusion as to their future if there was one. Finlay with the utmost consideration and care allowed her to break with him and then call him back into her arms a few times. The English were hot on their heels and they had to come up with a way to fend them off even though the odds were not in their favor. They would fight for their honor for a free Scotland for future generations. This is a must read they face death on several occasions trying to outwit the English. They find allies along the way. But Henry ruthless pursuit of Isla was getting closer and closer. Do not pass this book up. It will keep you glued to each page hungry for more, waiting to see what will happen next. You will not be disappointed.
A KNIGHT FOR HER HIGHLAND HEART:
This took me by surprise. The story told is about the fierce proud hold of freedom the Highlanders held against the English. This is years after the last book “Her Highlander’s Lion Heart”. It is suspenseful and a page turner. There is so much action it was hard to put the book down. In the last book a secret alliance between Lord Torstein and Finlay developed because Torstein knew what the crown wanted was wrong. So far, the Baird clan have been living in peace. However, Finlay and Isla knew it was only a matter of time before it was challenged again. Gavina is now grown up and is the leader of a special squad called the Bairdsmen. They are the elitists of all the warriors. Finlay and Isla have given her the leadership of this group. She is more than qualified. Lord Jessup was sent by the king to finish up what Lord Torstein was not able to accomplish. The eradication of the Baird clan. For years Torstein led Jessup on a wild goose chase never divulging the Baird’s location. In war torn Scotland the English still fought the Scots. Jessup finally got a lead and followed it. In the meantime, Gavina and Lord Torstein’s man Christian began a physical relationship. Christian was for peace and sided with the Highlanders. He also fell in love with Gavina. Gavina has always maintained to never fall in love. There was no place in the life of a warrior for it. But she was wrong. Torstein escaped his brutal imprisonment from Jessup to warn Finlay and Isla war was imminent. The clan worked to fortify the village, sent all those who could not fight and the children away, train all volunteers in swordplay and the bow and arrow. When word reached Finlay that they needed more men, it was decided that they had no choice but to approach a rogue clan McManus. The Laird Rory McManus agreed for a price to support the Baird clan in the fight against the English. They waited… nervously. This book is filled with excellent characters to fill every expectation. The story is as unpredictable as the weather and there are twists and turns in the book that will take you by surprise. Never a dull moment. You will not be disappointed. This book was based on Isla’s sister Gavina. There is another book in this series, that I can’t wait to read. It will be based on Isla and Finlay’s son Eamon. I highly recommend all the books in the series.
HER HIGHLAND DEFENDER:
I just finished reading and I am emotionally exhausted. This book contains a high degree of tension and suspense as well as adrenaline fueled action. As I was reading, I almost came to tears when a beloved character made their exit from the story. This series has been fabulous. The fight for peace and independence, a fight to live and have families safe and sound, a fight to end all fights. It is curious to me that today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He sacrificed his life for social justice and equality. He had a “Dream”. The Bairds have had a dream throughout generations to settle down, to find a good life, start families and stay safe from all harm. This book is a page turner as the Baird Clan meet their armageddon. A silent deadly force is slaughtering village after village plundering and pillaging in the name of God. They strike every man woman and child leaving none alive. Now they are headed in the direction of the Baird. This book had me at page one and I could not put it down. There are intrigues, gluttons, evil masters, thugs for hire, thugs recruited on pain of death and more than one budding romance. This story had me twisted inside out. The plot and subplots were very well executed and segued perfectly from scene to scene and page to page. The honor, loyalty and dedication of the characters were at the forefront of the story. As I said before, some of the characters have left the series but will never be forgotten. This series has had a strong impact on me and I would encourage you to read each book in sequence. These characters are noble, good, decent, intelligent, wise. But they are also the fiercest warriors in the Highlands. They earned that title. They took nothing for granted and wisely spent each day always prepared to fight and yet always prepared to love. This is the best book so far in the series and it feels like this is the end of the road. Barbara Bard sure knows how to create an image of what is happening in the story so you feel you are right there alongside of the characters. Heaven knows I felt in their world while reading. This is an amazing book and I highly recommend it.
