If there’s one thing I hate more than anything, it’s the undead.
So, just my luck that I’ve got a ghost living rent-free inside my head… world.
Fast forward years later and I’ve been possessed by a ghost! But, Treth of Concord isn’t just any ordinary ghost. He’s proud, chivalrous and a knight from another world.
Now, with his counsel and some cheap swords I bought on the internet, I hunt the undead of Hope City. For honour, for vengeance, and maybe just a hefty bounty.
My name is Kat Drummond, and I’m a Part-Time Monster Hunter.

I really enjoyed it. This is a great set of books and Kat is an epic character. It took me about a book and a half to really get into the series but now that I have I’m not going to be able to stop! Talk about a cliffhanger, I knew something bad was going to happen but I can’t believe what happened at the end of the fourth book.
Exciting fare, but with its core in believable characters. Many come from a tragic past, and they grow and change as the series progresses.
Great humor keeps it from becoming too dark, but be warned: In this world, there be monsters!
“Not all wolves are monsters, they’re just different. And while some become beasts, they aren’t so different from humans. Some are good. Some are evil.”
“Because we work together. Because we fight the darkness. Because, without us…all is lost.”
This series is killing me! lol. I’m so wrung up I may bounce like a coil, so much tension, my lower lip is all chewed up! So much tension, cracking nerves, and nail biting, heart wrenching moments! A life of pain. Of sacrifice. But I also saw resilience, heroism. The grit that kept someone going, that makes you a human. Brett and Guy’s POV were excellent as Corps members, incorporated as a child soldier. A Corps created on vengeance to slay monsters and protect humanity, driven by despair, where every fight, every battle was only to get rid of the monsters, not taking into account the base nor morality of their actions. But, I can’t judge them, because each one of them were victims of their own tragic pasts. Brett has evolved beside Kat, leaving behind his hatred, his need of vengeance, learning and understanding that not all monsters and creatures from the In-between are evil, just like the humans, some are good and others bad. Nicholas Woode-Smith has captured the essence of what makes us humanitarian. He has totally captivated me. This series has no fillers, it’s a complete and engaging storyline, an exceptional world building, an exciting and thrilling experience. Each premise is impressive and worthy to read it. Needless to say I highly recommend this series!
This urban fantasy series is well written. Funny, full of adventure, excitement, monsters, battles through great characters.
Well worth the read.
Part-Time Monster Hunter (Kat Drummond #1): Very Good Start to an Intriguing New Series – Kat is a teenage in an alternate Earth type setting after a “magical” Cataclysm that made some people magic users and opened the “door” for creatures out of myth and legend to enter the world. Kat lost her parent in a horrific experience and now supports herself as a part-time monster hunter while putting herself through school. She tries to find a balance, but has issues that makes that difficult. Oh, and let’s not forget the little “voice” in her head with ideas of its own. The world is well developed as are the characters. There were a few areas where wording or misunderstanding broke my focus, but that did not happen often. I did get a bit frustrated with Kat, but I think that’s to be expected. I’m also leery of the potentially unfair things alluded to at the end, but that certainly won’t keep me from reading the next book in the series.
Blood Cartel (Kat Drummond #2): Kat Still Impulsive and Questionable Judgement, But Growing and Maturing – I really enjoyed Blood Cartel, the second in the Kat Drummond series. Kat is ridiculously having to deal with consequences of the first book, but once past that, the story moves along. Kat questions and doubts many things, including her own abilities outside of being a “blunt weapon”, but still tries, after a bit of hesitation, and we see her growing beyond being a simple hunter. She makes some new connections while strengthening some old ones. Sadly, not all her connections go favorably, but I expect there is more behind that story. In the end, Kat continues to develop and shows herself to be a natural leader that people trust, still a bit impulsive, but very loyal and determined to be better. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Devil’s Gambit (Kat Drummond #3): Kat Continues to Develop Both Professionally and Personally – In Devil’s Gambit, book 3 of the Kat Drummond series, Kat continues to grow and we learning much more about her backstory as well as those of several other characters. Kat again shows some extraordinary power, but still doesn’t understand it or really have control. There are some interesting new characters, some good, some bad, and some undetermined. Kat is still showing doubts about her abilities beyond just stabbing, but hopefully moving past that. Also, she’s developing some relationships and interested to see how that goes. Overall, a very good book and looking forward to the next in the series.
Necrolord (Kat Drummond #4): Darkest Yet of Kat Drummond Series – Our heroine, Kat, continues to develop and grow, this time as a leader and the hassles that go with that, and unfortunately, being a young woman. Despite hardships, she perseveres and we meet some new people and learn more about other people and entities. All that said, this to me was the darkest of the books so far and I was a little unhappy with the events at the end (no spoilers). Still, I enjoyed the book overall, as I have the series, and will be looking for the next one to be released.
