That Secret Society of women are at it again. One of the members, Sarah, got a threatening note left on her car windshield warning her not to get involved with city business and then another note was sent to her home. Sarah likes one of the firefighters, Hugh, and finds out how many hours they have been working and that because of budget cuts no one can be hired. Of course, there is someone who doesn’t want them snooping around. What will happen? Will they help solve this issue?
This book actually got my interest early on. It had the laughter, awkward moments, love and seriousness. The characters worked well together in the story. I would recommend this book.
This second book in the series has all the good things from the first book plus a rousing good story with a bit of mystery mixed in. One of the ladies from the Historical Society finds herself being stalked. She is a kindergarten teacher, well loved by her students and well liked by the other members of the Historical Society. So well liked that the Society takes it on itself to shadow her to find out who is responsible. There is also a new romantic interest, one that our girl isn’t sure she will be able to handle. At stake is the one firehouse in the little town and the overworked firefighters who work there. The Historical Society has a well-earned reputation for poor pageants, so it is ironic that this next one is where everything comes to a head. I enjoyed reading this book!
Where There’s Smoke by Kirsten Fullmer is a fun read that shows the adventures of the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society. One of their newer members, Sarah, stirs up trouble when she pushes for more firefighters in her growing community. She is a dedicated kindergarten teacher who wishes to keep her students safe. She wonders if she pushed too hard when she receives threatening letters. The ladies historical society come into action, they don’t take kindly with someone messing with one of their own.
Kirsten Fullmer does not disappoint her readers with Where There’s Smoke. I love watching the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society in action. Their unique personalities, careers, and talents make them a force to be reckoned. The author combines the drama of their lives, suspense of Sarah’s history, and the thrill of hunting down the stalker to make this an amazing read. I am really enjoying this series and can’t wait to read the next one, though I am reading them in reverse order.
Kirsten Fullmer has created the most perfect and picturesque small town that would be a dream to inhabit. The characters are fantastic and in particular the members of the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society, that equally contrast and compliment each other. A theme I am especially fond of is the strong women that Kirsten depicts in her books. The plot itself was very entertaining; the mystery plays out nicely and smoothly with a brewing romance and plenty of lightheartedness thrown in for good measure. I think I could happily read and enjoy all of Kirsten’s books, she’s fab!
Cozy mysteries are by far my favorite book genre and Kirsten Fullmer knows how to write a great one. This is the second instalment of this series and it’s kept the same theme, location and characters while still feeling like a unique book, so you could read them all or just the ones that are most interesting to you (although, I’d highly recommend reading them all). The plot itself is exciting and flows well, with some essential romance too. Just brilliant!
Such a fun, entertaining mystery. Where There’s Smoke has it all! The plot was seamless and delightful, and the characters were marvelous with their individual quirks and unique personalities that intertwined to create drama and humor. Romance like every good mystery should have and plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I especially like the picturesque town and thought it was beautifully described.
I enjoyed the plot of this story as the writing carried me swiftly through the book. I thought the characters were perfectly developed for this story line and found myself caring about each of them. The mystery was strongly written and held my interest until the end, leaving me ready for the next book!
I think this is a great weekend, vacation, beach, road trip, anytime read!
I loved the first book in the Sugar Mountain series so I was really second to read the second installment and get back to investigating with the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society. For their latest mystery, the ladies are investigating a series of threatening notes send to a school teacher, Sarah after she starts campaigning for an expansion of the fire department. It’s not all bad for Sarah as there is a new romance blossoming for her with the handsome fireman Hugh, but will she be able to let her fears go?
Just like the first Sugar Mountain novel, ‘Where There’s Smoke’ is funny, heartfelt, and full of interesting characters. I can wait for my next meeting with the Historical Society.
I bought this book for vacation but ending up reading it at home; the book really lifted my spirits and was a great way to spend a few days non the less. I was enthralled with the characters and the story line but I already knew I would be because I’d previously read the first instalment of the Sugar Mountain series. This one is just as fantastic and mysterious. I’m hoping to read the other series by this author too.
Author Kirsten Fullmer has worked in the field of engineering, has been a teacher at the college level, was a freelance consultant, and has an affinity for art. Now retired, she has published nine novels including her six part HOMETOWN SERIES, LOVE ON THE LINE, and her SUGAR MOUNTAIN series of which WHERE THERE’S SMOKE is Book 2.
One kindred spirit in Kirsten’s romance novels is the presence of strong female characters and how they cope with love, life and relationships. Stepping away from her previous Hometown Girl locale of Smithville, this story takes place in a very ‘special’ town – Sugar Mountain, North Carolina – and the unique aspect of this setting is introduced in the Prologue _ “The little town of Sugar Mountain, North Carolina rests in the high country of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks to its secluded location and unprecedented beauty, the area is an established tourist destination…What historians don’t know is that the sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Nothing underhanded mind you, the society is not scandalous, it’s the true objective of the group is the hush-hush.’ Mystery, and the reader’s curiosity established, the story presses forward.
Kirsten’s summary outlines the plot: ‘The charming little town of Sugar Mountain NC needs an additional firehouse. Now that the town is bursting with tourists, the fire department is spread too thin. Mayor Winslow and the town council don’t agree, but Sarah, the town’s kindergarten teacher, has seen firsthand the need for more fire fighters. Will Sarah follow her heart and fall in love, or will long buried anxiety hold her back?’
A cozy mystery, a small town romance, and in Kirsten Fullmer’s hands this novel comes alive with vigor – a terrific continuation of her popular Sugar Mountain series. Recommended on many levels.
I have read the first installment of this series, Sugar Mountain, and thoroughly enjoyed it! This addition follows the same secret society working together to solve crimes and mysteries in order to protect their beautiful town but with a new lead. Sarah has a mission to keep her charges safe but faces opposition where she least expects, this leads to death threats and Sarah enlisting the help of her faithful friends to figure out who is behind said threats and to succeed in her quest to improve her towns fire department. Throw in some romance and you get a great, intriguing, paging turning mystery full of humour and grace.
