Have you ever hit rock bottom? I embarrassingly have. It’s why I’m wearing my girl’s decorative scarf over my head, clutching her lady drink to my chest, and singing ever so softly to Joni Mitchell while swaying back and forth. This is what therapists refer to as LOSING IT. Oldest story in the book: boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy screws up MASSIVELY, girl tells boy to suffocate in the … girl tells boy to suffocate in the fruits of his very own unborn children.
Heard it before? I’m sure you have.
So what’s so different about this story? Well, it’s about me, The Modern Gentleman, New York City’s top advice columnist, and my rather ungraceful downfall from my pristinely polished pedestal.
It’s about a girl I met who threw all my proven theories to the wind and left me awkward, needy, and absolutely head-over-wingtipped shoes in love.
This is a story about June Lacy and how she single-handedly dismantled The Modern Gentleman.

Oh poor poor Wes! Writing an online column teaching men how to be Modern Gentlemen and helping them with relationship advice, only to stutter when it comes to his own experiences. You gotta hand it to him though, he takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. He has a way of making himself turn from Hero to Zero. (Though Zero isn’t really the right term, but you’ll get what I’m saying when you read this book.) It’s primarily written from his POV, (but the switch to her POV adds a little extra humor.) If you are familiar with this author, you know there is plenty of humor. The side characters add that something special, in terms of teasing banter. Since it is primarily his POV, we don’t see much from her side. As far as his character goes, in addition to what I already mentioned, he’s a really good guy. Even his big mistake (that caused the big break-up, we all knew was coming,) wasn’t so bad that it couldn’t be forgiven, and you don’t totally blame him for it. (Although he was in the wrong.) Her character is a little bit quirky. She’s fun. She challenges him. We don’t really get much in regards to her background, to know why she is the way she is… she’s a bit of a mystery like that. Obviously she’s been hurt in the past (as is the case in so many romances,) but there aren’t any secrets hinted at or anything like that. This is a rather quick read. Seems to be shorter than many other books by the author. Of course, her books are always hard to put down. Lots and lots of humor. Not really any deep emotional scenes. Well written and plotted out story. Very limited sexual content, though some of the talk is a bit crude at times… thanks to those side characters.
I do NOT recommend reading this book late at night while the world around you sleeps, because this book had me laughing out loud so much!
Meghan Quinn does it again! I really enjoyed reading The Modern Gentleman. I haven’t seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, so I can’t compare. ‘That being said, I love the story, the characters -although Roman was a bit too much some times- and also love the advice Wes doles out!
I want to explore this world more and would love to see Roman and Caden get their Happily Ever After!
Most of this book is written in Wes’s POV; we get June’s POV towards the end.
The Modern Gentleman is a slow-burn contemporary romance written in dual first-person POV. It’s a standalone that ends with a HEA. No cliffhanger, no cheating.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

This was such an enjoyable read! First we meet Wes, the advice columnist in New York for men, who goes by the moniker “The Modern Gentlemen”. Men write in with their dating blunders and he gives them solid advice on how to get the girl. But when he’s tasked with finding a girl of his own, he finds that all his advice doesn’t work on the girl he wants. We get to watch him stumble and blunder as the female protagonist June, makes him work harder than he’s ever worked before. And suddenly all the advice he’s been doling out doesn’t seem to work on her. But he’s determined more than ever to win the heart of June. Will he succeed??? You will have to read it to find out… you know I don’t give away spoilers.
And let me just say how much I LOVED June! She had so much confidence and wasn’t going to let some suave guy cause her to break the boundaries she put in place for dating. I love that about her! (and a great example for women in general) If the guy really likes you, he will put in the work!
This gets 5 stars from me!
I was generously provided an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I find myself increasingly drawn to romantic comedies this day (normally I prefer the darker romance)- and I’m really loving my foray into the lighter side- and Meghan Quinn is undoubtedly the queen of fun and quirky love stories.
Modern Gentleman is the story of Wesley Waldroft Williams (What a name!), write of “The Modern Gentleman” column tasked with writing love advice for men in finding the perfect woman- think Carrie Bradshaw, but a dude. He attempts to implement his own advice to pen this how-to-guide to catch his dream lady- and hilarity ensues as he attempts (and fails) to actually do all the things he tells his readers. He pursues Jane Lacy, aspiring broadway actress with a bunch of side hustle jobs- but she’s a bit of an old school gal, so he has to really up his charming game, and again, hilarity ensues. PLus, we have some funny side characters adding some laughs. As the story progresses, we see a sweet and funny love story evolve as they form an emotional connection (cause this is more of a slower burn). This love story is all warm and fuzzies, friends.
The book is actually told mostly through the hero’s POV (which is not my norm), and I loved getting insight into Wes’s head- made him all the more charming and loveable. This book has all the romantic tension and tons of witty banter, funny moments, and charm. I really loved Wes- he was swoon worthy and a goofball all at once. I didn’t connect with June as much, and they didn’t’ quite give me as much spark as I like- a lot of sweet, not as much sizzle. Plus, I found myself drawn to Wes’s friends more than June sometimes- they were just that awesome. (and they may have stolen the show….)
The book is actually told mostly through the hero’s POV (which is not my norm), and I loved getting insight into Wes’s head- made him all the more charming and loveable (And we do get a few June POV moments). This book has tons of witty banter, funny moments, and charm, and even if Wes and June as a couple aren’t my fav or and it might not be on my permanent rotation of favorites, it did make me smile and laugh and lightened my heart, and to me, that makes it a worth it read. Overall 3.5 stars.
Meghan Quinn’s “The Modern Gentleman” was a sweet, charming, and laugh out loud funny story featuring smart, likeable, three-dimensional characters, and I loved it. The slow burn of main characters’ Wes and June’s relationship growth was fantastic, and I adored how June made Wes work for every single step forward in their romance. I also enjoyed the story’s twist on the classic movie rom-com “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” It wasn’t an exact replica of the movie but rather incorporated a few of the best elements into a new, unique story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I loved that the male lead, Wes, was the narrator for so much of the book. The inside of his head was a pretty darn funny place, and his asides of advice to his readers were often hilarious (intentionally or not). I also loved how endearingly awkward he became when he was around June. Wes seemed like such a sophisticated, smooth guy most of the time, so it was nice to see him have to make an effort to impress his girl. It showed just how much he actually liked June, and that their relationship was more than just an experiment to him.
Wes and June’s conversations were a ton of fun from the start, and I especially enjoyed the way June teased Wes and they bantered back and forth. I also loved how mysterious she was with him at first, refusing to share her phone number or any other contact info. They really did have an old-fashioned courtship, from their in-person first meeting to having to communicate through (landline!) phone calls instead of texts.
In addition to the central romantic relationship between Wes and June, I loved the bromance between Wes and his best friends Caden and Roman. The way the three of them interacted was hilarious, and I really hope there are future stories planned for Caden and Roman because they both seemed like such fun guys.
Overall, I highly recommend “The Modern Gentleman” for all contemporary romance and romantic comedy fans and look forward to Meghan Quinn’s next book.

Only Meghan Quinn can start a book at the hilarious and ridiculous break up and have you on the edge of your seat to learn the details of how it all went wrong.
Poor, poor, poor Wes. I should feel bad for enjoying watching him flounder and at some points get straight up beat up but I was too busy laughing to feel any guilt.

This is definitely going on my best books of the year. Tears streamed from my eyes from how much I was laughing. Wes and June were so adorable together and even though this is a full length novel, it still didn’t feel long enough and I want more of them.
Meghan Quinn is a beautiful writer and I really was blown away not only by how funny this was, but how sweet and romantic it was.
This is the definition of a romantic comedy. Please read it.
