The premier name in African-American historical romance fiction, the incomparable Beverly Jenkins returns to the American West with Night Hawk—a blistering tale of high-stakes romance that unites a hard-as-nails bounty hunter with a gorgeous spitfire whom he rescues from a vigilante mob.Outlaw.Preacher. Beautiful, outspoken, woman of mixed native and black heritage is a prisoner passed off to bible quoting, sawed off shotgun toting, ex bounty hunter, U.S. deputy marshal of mixed Scottish and black heritage. Vigilantes are out to lynch her for murder and he is to see that she is safely turned over to the sheriff in the next town to be bound over for trial. That’s just the beginning of this brilliantly written historical western romance by Beverly Jenkins! I have re-read this book countless times and fall in love with Ian Vance aka Preacher aka Night Hawk everytime. Maggie is an awe inspiring, never say die, kind of woman that has you rooting for her all the way. Pick this book up and I guarantee you won’t put it down until you see the words The End.
Another amazing story by Beverly Jenkins! One of the things I love about Jenkins’ books is how she masterfully weaves in history with her character driven stories. I loved the complexity of both Ian and Maggie, it was so enjoyable to watch them taking on life in the often harsh and unpredictable American West and finding love along the way. A total page turner from start to finish!
Absolutely wonderful read with great historical info and multifaceted characters.
Love all Beverly’s books
Peeps, meet Preacher (aka Ian)! He’s a Scottish/Black, green eyed, quiet cutie who’s been a lawyer/outlaw/Bible-thumping bounty hunter/widower/US Marshal/cattle owner. He has the patience of a saint and brains to match the beauty. He was definitely awesome sauce with an extra side of heat! It’s no wonder Maggie threw him for a loop!
Maggie for all her roadblocks in life-orphaned, discriminated for being Kaw/Black, single, and female-turned out to be an extremely resilient, very intelligent, sometimes quite amusing, and highly stubborn spitfire with a penchant for finding trouble…through no fault of her own. Her honesty sometimes provoked hilarious results-wait until you read what she did to the man who did her wrong, but also gave insight in to who she truly was without the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Night Hawk was heartbreaking yet redeeming story all in the same breath. There were just so many feels happening! I also thought there was more humor in this book. That or Maggie just had a knack for making Ian crack a smile when least expected! Ms. Bev also touched on Black, Native American and Chinese history points as Ian and Maggie swept across the Plains on the railway towards their final destination and I happily devoured every single word.
Since Ian Vance’s wife was murdered years ago, he has hardened his heart to feel nothing. Until a beautiful criminal is placed into his care. Maggie Freeman has been on her own since she was a child. She is used to taking care of herself and getting out of situations. But when a mob comes after her she has to accept the help of a handsome bounty hunter to win her freedom.
“Why do you want to marry me?” “Because I want this adventure we’re on to continue. Because you fill my heart. Because I want you to have that garden.”
OMG I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. Maggie was the best. She is spunky, smart, and a trouble magnet. I love how she gets her revenge on the people who wronged her. Ian is the strong, silent, law enforcement agent with a troubled past. He has lost so much in his life and now he keeps everyone out. Maggie slowly breaks down the barriers he has erected and shows him how to laugh and live again. I loved their slow building relationship and how they challenged each other.
“You watch her with eyes of love.”
This is one of the best historical romances I have read in a very long time. I love Beverly Jenkins’ writing and her amazing character. I am instantly sucked into the world and the characters’ lives. There is so much emotion and feeling between the characters I can’t help but fall in love with them. Also I found out that my library has a bunch of her books so expect a lot more of her books in the future.
Overall, this was a wonderful historical romance and I totally recommend it if you enjoy historical western romances.
