The classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. Now reissued in a new cover style.
One winter night, seven men and a woman are parachuted onto a mountainside in wartime Germany. Their objective: an apparently inaccessible castle, headquarters of the Gestapo. Their mission: to rescue a crashed American general before the Nazi interrogators can force him to … him to reveal secret D-Day plans.

A true classic. Hard to put down and a plot that only a master could conceive.
Amazing story, great characters, some twists and turns. Of you liked WWII fiction, you’ll love this book.
All his books are wonderful reads
Very exciting. I couldn’t put it down. Lots of twist and turns in the story.
Simple minded.
Shallow is too deep a description!
I loved this book even though I’ve seen the movie several times. I love a well written adventure book and this one delivered on all fronts – great characters and fast action and perfect plotting. A winner!
Outstanding book, as all of Alistair MacLean books are.
The movie was better. Book was too lengthy and not very good writing.
I read this book because I knew it was based on an actual World War Two operation that was extremely risky at best, and suicidal at worst. The book went into much deeper detail than the movie ever could. I found myself almost biting my nails at certain points in the story. Ultimately, it showed once again how far superior the Allied Forces were to the Axis Powers.
I have loved all his books! Adventure and mystery!
Loved this book and the movie. Alister Mcclean is a great story writer. I have read most of his novels and are starting to reread them. Great author.
Some people have said in reviews that this story is “dated”. I would assume before reading that it would be as it was written many years ago and technology and the world has changed a great deal since then. However I don’t understand lowering the review rating because of that. The author wrote a very good story, which was made into a very good movie for its time.
I put this down after three attempts to read it. Very slow moving and difficult to hang on to.
excellent book. Easily read would recommend it to all. If there is a problem it could be because too many have seen the movie. This movie has been repearted time and again on TV.
