A paint by the numbers mess with a bland, egotistical jackass H and a bland and spineless idiot for a heroine. A match made in HP heaven.
The H gets angry and kicks her out because she of the mistress status meddled in some family issues. She leaves with her secret embryo.
About a year later he needs her help in getting an island as the owner, an old Greek curmudgeon, took a shine to her sweet ways. So, the H shows up at her place of business and tells her she owes him and has to help. She’s like…Okay. Just gets in his private jet and goes. That’s pretty much it. No threats, strong-arming, no punishing kisses. At least I don’t think he did. I was struggling to not throw my computer at the wall.
Eventually he finds out about the secret baby and her stretch marks and is furious. Oh, get over it.
He is beyond arrogant and is the ultimate control freak, and it will always be her fault.
‘You should tell Drakon why you want the island,’ Kerry said suddenly. ‘Then he would definitely sell to you.’
‘He is going to sell to me,’ Theo replied flatly, feeling a nasty jab of irritation at Kerry’s unexpected comment. ‘Mine is the best offer he’s received.’
‘But it’s not about the money,’ Kerry insisted. ‘You told me that. He cares about the island.’
‘Don’t give me business advice.’ Theo’s voice was bitingly cold. ‘Don’t think that because I took you to his island you are in any way qualified to offer me your opinion.’
He stared at her angrily. Why had she become so bold all of a sudden? The girl who’d shared his life before would never have started trying to tell him how to manage his business affairs.
Did you forget the part where you went to her workplace and said she had to help you get the island. Yes, you did you filthy jackass. Then more caca later when she apologize (needlessly I might add) for her initial interference.
Perhaps it was because up until this afternoon Kerry had never truly apologised for what had happened. He’d only known that she regretted the outcome—rather than the fact that she had interfered in the first place. But now he believed that she was genuinely sorry. And he’d been impressed by the open honesty she had shown Hallie and Corban.
As he looked at her a strange sensation passed through him. He frowned, momentarily disconcerted as he couldn’t identify what he was feeling. Then he realised what it was—pride. He was proud of how she had taken responsibility and given such a heartfelt apology to Hallie and Corban.
Excuse me while I retch and say “Thank you kind sir may I have another”.
I’m at the 98% point, and he still hasn’t said anything nice to her other than, “I want you so much.”
He doesn’t smoke so he won’t die young, but here are some alternate endings.
Option 1: She decides to play it his way and turns even blander, but finds a nice, hunky boy toy with whom she can express her opinions. Saucy, I know.
Option 2: She tries in vain to stand up for herself but ends up addicted to ouzo, but the chickens come home to roost when the plot moppet grows up and becomes an angsty, young man after seeing his mother subjected to constant scorn and throws it all back in his father’s face. The son will, unfortunately, continue this destructive pattern with his own h zombie.
