CRUEL TO BE KIND One day Alexandra Weber looks up and everyone around her is moving on, growing up, and storing their emotional baggage, which leaves them little time to continue to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. In a moment of rash impulsiveness, for which she is famous, following a night that goes entirely out of control – she’s done that way too many times to count – she makes a … – she makes a mistake that leads to an impossible ultimatum and a chance at happiness.
Winn Taylor grew up at Crooked Brook Ranch. His life is full of good friends, close family, and a job he was born to do. Yet, he feels like he’s drowning. Just when he’s certain he can’t take on one more responsibility, the girl from Chicago shows up. Alex and Winn hate how they spotlight each other’s brokenness. It seems, the only good things they share are their protective affection for Winn’s brother, and their love for an abused horse who needs both of them to get better.

Wonderful characters with a great connection and plenty of chemistry throughout the pages. Flow of the storyline was great.

This was a well written story with great characters. I loved the banter and the way the characters related to one another. I could not put it down. I hope to read other books by E.J. Nickson if they are all like this one. The relationship between Alex and Winn, everyone needs someone. I loved everything about this book.

WOW – what a story this one is. It is not short at all, actually quite on the longer bit, but who notices that when the story is this good? I could hardly put it down to sleep last night! It is not a story full of violence and such, but really a story full of the story and it takes you with on the journey. It is one of those you can read, and feel, and almost hear, and you can almost just live it while you are reading it, it seems just so real, the frustrations, the angst, the love, the tenderness, the fighting, the arguing, the life, the love – all of it comes together to make one really smashingly fabulous story. Five stars go to this one without a doubt and if there were more of the stars to hand out it would get those as well

I have to say that this was truly a great job for a debut author. E.J. Nickson did a wonderful job of writing Alexandra and Winn’s chemistry. I enjoyed the story line and also the other characters in the book. I can’t wait to see some of them flesh out in other Crooked Brook books. If I had a complaint it would be that I much prefer reading stories in first person and this one was written in third person. Other than that, great job!!!

This was E.J Nickson’s debut book and overall I really enjoyed it. The romance element was slow building and as the story is told in the third person, I didn’t really feel that I got into the characters as much as I do when story’s are written in the first person. However, I loved the chemistry between the main leads, the supporting characters were great and really added to the story (Looking forward to their future books) and the story itself was enjoyable. I was a wee bit disappointed with the ending as it felt all just a little anti climactic. I really wanted more from our main characters romance although it does look like we’ll get more from them as side characters in future stories. This was an enjoyable debut book and I look forward to more from this series.
