One down, six to go.
Mix John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers and Robert Parker’s Spenser with a financial crimes investigator, and you’d get Seamus McCree.
I liked Furthermore so much, I’m adding the first six books to my Want to Read list. My pile is getting out of control. At this rate, I know it may be a long, cold winter, but you will find me under a warm blanket reading.
Furthermore is set in Boston after what I’m guessing was a huge dust up with The Happy Reaper, McCree’s nemesis in the first six books. Suffering through physical therapy after being injured in the last book, Seamus is more likely to order Chinese takeout than cook himself a gourmet dinner. Helping solve a financial crime seems like a good use of his time. But from behind prison walls, The Reaper threatens his family, and suspense builds as Seamus races to protect his loved ones.
Although I haven’t read the previous books, in a short time I was up to speed and invested in the fully dimensional cast of characters. Jackson packs humor, twists, and turns into a novella size ride that despite its length included everything I want from a thriller.
An enjoyable, fast-paced novella that will keep your attention until the very last page. I generally shy away from novellas, but since I read this as an ARC and this was the first time I was reading this author, I figured it was a great starting place. Well, after reading this book, I’m hooked. Never a spoiler in my reviews, this book is full of engaging characters embedded into a good story that is easy to catch on to. I never felt lost and enjoyed the story a lot, enough to make me want to go back and read the other books by this author in this series. Take a chance, pick it up and I’m sure you’ll agree, this book gives you everything you are looking for in a suspense thriller including the twists that result in unpredictable events! You’ll find this read is well worth your time!
Fast-paced writing grabs you from the first page – and I couldn’t put it down! Seamus is a smart protagonist and the twists and turns kept me in suspense until the end. Love this series and this is a new great addition to the Seamus story. I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book for an honest review and I can honestly say I loved this book! Can hardly wait for the next one.
The latest installment in the Seamus McCree series is a novella with roller-coaster pacing and those wonderful characters we’ve come to love. This time Seamus is on one leg and crutches, having been hurt in his earlier encounter with a hitman called the Happy Reaper. Seamus, who specializes in investigating financial crimes, offers to help Colleen Carpetti, who has been fired from her corporate job for sexual harassment. He already has enough to worry about with his son, Paddy, under investigation, but he offers to help Colleen, who was a friend of his Uncle Mike’s. The plot twists and turns, threading through a meeting with the Happy Reaper in prison, a plan to prove Colleen innocent of the harassment charge and get her job back, and worry about the FBI investigation. This book is Jackson at his best, with complicated characters, family loyalty at the core, plot threads that weave in and out, and a fast pace that will keep you turning pages until you reach a surprising conclusion.

I really enjoyed this novella featuring Seamus McCree. Even though I have not read any of the other books in this series, I had no trouble keeping up with the characters. This book grabbed my attention from the first page and kept me intrigued until the end. All the books in the Seamus McCree will be added to my TBR list. I will definitely be adding James M. Jackson to my list of authors to read.

When False Bottom ended, the Happy Reaper was in jail and Seamus McCree’s family was safe from the hitman. Furthermore is story of the next chapter in McCree’s life. Set in Boston, he’s reunited with his son, granddaughter, and ex-wife, and a new character enters his life, Colleen Carpetti. Colleen worked with Uncle Mike and his slush fund to support police widows and children. Now she has been fired from her corporate accounting job after uncovering signs of misappropriated funds. Seamus has a strong sense of right and wrong but he relies on his son’s computer hacking skills to help get answers. In this novel in the series, we get more inner dialogue from Seamus that has him questioning many things about his life. Some questions get answered but not the one about whether he’ll get back together with his wife. I prefer the Seamus McCree stories set in Michigan but will not stop reading Jackson’s books if he moves Seamus to Boston.
I really enjoyed this novella….just finished it and can’t wait for more of Seamus McCree’s ventures into finding dishonest people in the corporate world. Along with his son, Paddy and a few other important people, Seamus has a knack for finding the culprits and seeing them go down.
All the while, his arch enemy, “Happy Reaper” is always there in his mind, despite the fact he’s in prison, and still very dangerous. Thanks to Mr. Jackson for another terrific read!
I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy for an honest review.
This absorbing and highly satisfying mystery not only brings the world of corporate mismanagement and out-right corruption into focus, but also—through a fictitious tale—illuminates how real-world financial crimes can be committed. The latter is an area I, at least, had little understanding of.
But, that’s not all.
In the short span of a novella, James M. Jackson wove a tight, multifaceted story of crime and passion. First, our protagonist, Seamus McCree, must stop the murders of his mother, son, and granddaughter by a vengeful serial killer. As if that’s not enough, he finds himself embroiled in an investigation of a financial crime that endangers the reputation and career of someone close to him. And finally, while recuperating from an injury, his ex-wife, with whom he has a complicated relationship, has resurfaced in his life in an unexpected way. Luckily for us, Seamus is a master multitasker!
I highly recommend Furthermore. You won’t regret the time you send with Seamus in ferreting out crime.
I received an early ARC for an honest review.
Whenever I finish one of Jim Jackson’s Seamus McCree novels I always want more. As I wait for the next installation, I often go back and re-read a previous book, just to keep in touch with the characters. This novella, Furthermore, was a welcome visit to the world of the McCree’s and a great “afterward” for False Bottom. And of course it includes an investigative project that makes you THINK. I love these characters and the story of their lives that unfolds a little more with each edition. Can’t wait for the next one!
I’m always happy to see that the next Seamus McCree in the series is out. Furthermore rewarded my anticipation, adding another layer of intrigue to the McCree family story. My favorite financial sleuth, with the aid of his tech savvy son, Patrick, takes us on another suspenseful journey, this time into the esoteric theft of historical documents while dodging the real time, dangerous Happy Reaper. Furthermore is a delightful read.
Furthermore is the follow up to False Bottom. I read the short novel in an evening. The time flew by following Seamus McCree into a friend-of-a-friend matter. The characters were interesting and real. The plot was solid. The ending satisfying.
Seamus McCree books are always having a twist and turn in them. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. You can’t put the book down because you need to know what happens next. It’s never what you expect!
James Jackson is a GREAT Author, I have all of his books and I can’t wait to see what he writes next.
Seamus is a financial investigator by trade, and he has an ongoing, tangled “relationship” with a hitman who calls himself the “Happy Reaper.” In the cleverly named novella, Furthermore, we are catching up with what’s happened since False Bottom, when Seamus had a near-fatal encounter with Happy Reaper. Seamus is recovering from those injuries and the Happy Reaper is in jail, but with money and outside connections, the Happy Reaper is threatening everyone Seamus loves.
Furthermore also solves the mystery of Colleen Carpetti…is she a family member? If so, who is her father?
I have read all the Seamus adventures because Mr. Jackson can spin an intriguing tale, but also because Seamus and his family are likeable people that I want to know more about, and I look forward to what’s going to happen next. This novella can just as easily be enjoyed, however, if you have never read any of the prior books. I devoured it in one sitting…NEXT!
Seamus is still healing from his last escapade, when Colleen Carpetti asks Seamus for help with a situation of fraud at her accounting firm. Seamus is intrigued. When Colleen is abruptly fired on a bogus sexual harassment claim, Seamus knows the firm is keeping Colleen from investigating further. With a little hacking help from Paddy, Seamus sets out to make things right.
And who is Colleen? Is she Seamus’s daughter, sister, cousin…?
As Seamus helps Colleen, the Happy Reaper is determined to make Seamus suffer the thought of his whole family’s annihilation. Seamus must find a way to stop this madman’s quest for revenge.
This is a quick, fast-moving novella that throws you into the action and continues the momentum until the very end. I like the mental games Seamus and the Happy Reaper play as each new twist in their relationship ups the ante. This is my first time reading Seamus McCree and I look forward to reading more in the series.
This is the first time in reading this author with the story itself called to me and got my attention. Being a novella it is a quick one for me but still full of spice and delight for me as a reader. Even though I have not read any this still was a good starter for to become acquainted with Seamus. Secrets are in here and we all know we love secrets and uncovering them even better. There seems to be a bit of revenge that lingers in the air that needs to be cleared out before it does any damage. But then again I suppose that is the play by play that happens between Happy Reaper and Seamus. I found this to be such a gem in coming across this.
If you have read any of my reviews about James Jackson’s Seamus McCree series, you will know Seamus is one of my very favorite characters. Usually when you craft this type of character, you already have me hooked. Seamus is a financial investigator, smart and a softy, growly and tough when he needs to be and more importantly, smart enough to be scared now & then. And this time he’s a little beat up. A little more reflective about what has passed and what’s to come. His fun family is here as well as his ex-wife, or at least one of them 🙂
This is a novella and normally short stories are not my favorite. I’m fairly sure that in the literary world one is not supposed to call novellas short stories. Yet many times I feel both types are unsatisfying, unfinished somehow. In Furthermore James Jackson has included all the elements that you need in a good story. The bad guys and good guys are there. The mystery and suspense is there and his picture of Seamus and his family is as interesting as always. I have said previously that Jackson’s involvement of the whole family in this series tends to add more depth. Can you add more depth to a story in a novella? He seems to have done it here.
So, here’s how I feel about Jackson’s novella…it is really a great story to read. Somehow there is an all-encompassing story in this little novella. However, I want more Seamus McCree stories so I am in hopes Mr. Jackson is working on another book to follow. Novel or novella, I’ll take it.
Great novella! I picked this up as an introduction to Seamus McCree, can you believe that? This novella is outstanding. Despite my lack of familiarity with all things Seamus, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It is a perfect teaser, it turns out, and I am going to jump back to start with Ant Farm.
Things I love about this story include the author’s writing style and the characters. The story works for fans, old and new, as the characters are clearly referring to past events that will hold meaning for series fans. But the author succeeds in making this an enjoyable introduction for the series beginner like me. Characters are introduced with just enough background and explanation to bring me up to speed, at the same time never leaving me feeling lost by my lack of background. Well done James M. Jackson! No matter where the reader is, this is a win-win story I am really glad I picked up.
If you’re familiar with Seamus McCree’s past, then you’ll definitely want to catch up with what’s going on his life. He’s recovering from tearing up his ankle, living in the lower level condo in his ex-wife’s home, and worrying that the police could figure out his son had done some illegal hacking for him. Add to that – the appearance of a young woman who looks like she could be a McCree – but how? Last teaser – the Happy Reaper, who is in prison, is somehow involved in everything. Furthermore – the title is so appropriate!
I enjoyed reading Jim Jackson’s new novella. It was a good read that moved along at a perfect tempo. The characters are familiar to readers of the McCree adventures and the many plots leave ample trails for future stories. You won’t be disappointed.
Jim Wilson
The Happy Reaper is after Seamus and his family so how can he be stopped? So many problems face Seamus just how will he proceed? Can he help Colleen whilst he protects Paddy? If you add in his injury there is a lot going on in Seamus’s life.
How this is resolved makes for a well written, entertaining and intriguing story which I thoroughly enjoyed.
