Can It Be Real
Kate grew up with her grandmother raising her. But she got a scholarship to a good school. Her classmates came from money. They didn’t have money for extras put her best friend Payton has always been there. Her ex’s family didn’t approve of her which ended their relationship. Now she is working 60+ hours a week, and needs to get house done. Dominic is her neighbor’s nephew does this kind of work. They need each other, but will it go from fake boyfriend to a real owner.
3.5 stars, actually. This is a cute, sweet romance that is reminiscent of The Proposal. If you liked that movie, you’ll definitely like this story.
Kate is an up and coming power attorney whose goal is reaching judgeship by age 45. She’s on track to attain her goal. She had been dating Michael, a fellow attorney, for three years and was sure he was about to propose. Instead of proposing marriage, he proposed that they go their separate ways. The next thing Kate knows, Michael is engaged to the new attorney in the office. To say that she’s jealous is an understatement. She’s spitting fire and looking for retribution. What does Kate do? She invents a boyfriend, of course.
One afternoon, the boss calls Kate into his office to let her know he’s recommended that Kate be fast-tracked for the junior partnership. They should be deciding in a few weeks. He’s so glad to hear that Kate is finally in another relationship, that will help her with the committee. He suggests that Kate brings her boyfriend to the company retreat. Yikes! What does she do now???
Dominic has his own issues with relationships when he meets Kate while visiting his Aunt Glenda. As all things like this do, it becomes complicated. Very quickly.
This is a quick and entertaining read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s pure brain candy.
Don’t you just love the hot handyman type? Well for some reason I do. All that sweaty male perfection hammering a wall it’s just… yummy.
So, this is the story of Kate, a super goal-oriented lawyer on the verge of becoming a junior associate in her firm, and one step closer to her life ambition. Unfortunately, it seems that to get the promotion she wants she needs to prove that she has roots in the city… aka a boyfriend.
Dominic works as a contractor for his family’s company and is Kate’s neighbor’s nephew (why can’t I have neighbors like that huh?!). Dominic’s sister needs legal help and Kate would like a contractor who won’t charge her an arm and a leg for the work her house needs.
As luck would have it, while Dominic and Kate are out checking out the Home Depot near her house they are caught by some of Kate’s co-workers. And so the deal is struck. They’ll pretend to be together until she gets her promotion and Dominic’s sister accepts Kate’s legal help. All that’s left is to watch them fighting the fall.
Her Backup Boyfriend was a very light, quick read. I enjoyed it tremendously and would have given it 5 if only it wasn’t a “fading to black” kind of story regarding the sex. What can I say, I’m 30 and single, I like to read a little about the boudoir shenanigans. Both main characters were very likable, their chemistry was awesome and the tension was almost, almost enough to forget about the lack of sex.
Dominic’s family was hilarious and I’m hoping that Ms. Mallory is planning to write about all his siblings. I’m absolutely looking forward to more from this author.

Love her books!! One of my new favorite authors!
Short review. Sweet love story about finding love again, following your dreams, and discovering what you really want in life.
This was an easy read while on vacation. Chemistry between characters was present from beginning, but took a while for Kate to figure things out, and seemed to end abruptly. Still enjoyable, but would have liked a bit more st the end.
I enjoyed this book proving what you think you want and what you really want are two different things.
Sweet romance with a different spin.
Good book
Fun to read – read the second which also was fun- but two is enough as the story lines are predictable – no longer fun.
The story line in this book was believable and enjoyable. A couple of the characters could have been a little more developed. The reason it rates 4 stars for me, though, was the overwhelming number of errors in writing. I don’t know if that is due to the digitizing of the book or the original editing, but sometimes I couldn’t get through more than a few sentences without yet another error interrupting my focus. That’s becoming more common, sadly, but it doesn’t make it acceptable.
Well written book. Held my interest and read it in one evening!
Great read. Good moral choices.
