I am a massive fan of Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series. I’ve read every single book and love them all in different ways but Chasin’ Eight has to be one of my all-time favorites of this series.
I’m not sure what it is about the whole “my life has fallen apart and now I have to sort this mess out” vibe that I love but Chase and Ava are both feeling it, and they make a pact to sort out their messes together…and do it while on a road trip.
Of all the McKay family stories, this is one of the most distinctly standalone titles. If you wanted step into this world without a ton of McKays (Colby, Carter, Cord, Kade, Colt, Cameron, Keely, Kane, Ben, Tell, Gavin, Dalton…I’m sure I’m missing some) climbing into the story and forcing you to draw a family tree, this is a good spot.
This book is blindingly steamy and loaded with just as many big feels. I can’t recommend this series enough.
4.5 stars
I always feel it’s hard for me to give an accurate assessment of a story when I read it during a flu-induced fog. Being as I still kept finding a way to read this book when the only other thing I was able to do was sleep and blow my nose, I guess that says a lot about how engaging I found the story.
I absolutely adore the instant camaraderie Chase and Ava have. Once the initial shock of being thrust together is over, they realize they really like one another’s company. Ava comes from a completely different world than Chase, but they’re not so different once you peel away those outer layers. And there’s definitely a spark between them.
It’s not just the connection between Ava and Chase that drew me into this story, though. The people they meet on their journey really showed another side to Chase than the one most people, even his family, ever saw. The relationships he forged with Ryan and Taz are proof that Chase isn’t as superficial as he seems. I think he even surprises himself.
Although I was well aware of what Ava was doing on this journey, and I knew Chase would be mad when he found out, I wasn’t quite prepared for the snippet Chase saw. As much as I thought Ava should just tell Chase what her plans were, I did understand her insecurities about if she could pull it off. But the segment he came across made me as angry at her as Chase was.
Ava was a tough character for me. I really enjoyed her personality when she was on the road with Chase. Her relaxed demeanor and her ability to roll with the punches. When Ava went back to her “real life” with Chase in tow, I didn’t like that woman quite as much. I guess I can’t expect an heiress to a large empire to be totally without some draw toward the finer things in life. Plus, I’ll admit that Chase should have tried a bit harder to be open to the new experiences. But Ava seemed to be trying too hard to force a square peg into a round hole.
The way these two find each other, lose each other, and find each other again is gritty and real and honest. I loved every minute of it!

What a powerful story! Chase and Ava are both fairly well known people. Ava is a TV/movie star. Chase is the bad boy bull rider. When they end up together by chance they take the opportunity to spend some time traveling together, just as friends. Being as they are both hot, young people, the “just friends” idea doesn’t last for long. There is also a whole lot of issues regarding bull riding safety that get brought into the mix. I felt a lot of emotions involved in this story. As always Ms James has a very well written story with lots of hot scenes. She has a way of also emphasizing the characters insecurities, and how they play into the relationships, without it all sounding whiney.
Awesome series
