LEX
Even if I wasn’t losing my sight, I never would have seen him coming…
I’ve known my fate for years, but I wasn’t willing to accept it. But as the light in my eyes dims a little more each day, I have no choice but to adapt.
Or not.
The secluded cabin in the north woods of Maine is supposed to be an escape… a place where I can figure out how to move forward with my life… to find out if … life… to find out if I even can.
But then he shows up and suddenly I’m facing a new fight…
GIDEON
He wants to be left alone? Fine by me. But I’m not going to watch him just give up…
Wanting to be left alone, that’s something the guy and I have in common. But that’s about it. As far as I’m concerned, he’s just another rich city boy playing at living off the grid for a while. He’s got no idea what it really means to be alone.
My job is to take care of the cabin he’s staying in and that’s it. It doesn’t matter that I can’t stop thinking about why he looks so damn broken or wondering why he stirs something inside of me I thought long dead.
But try as I might, I can’t stay away from him, just like I can’t watch him give up on himself. He may be losing his sight, but I won’t let him lose himself.
I won’t let him become like me…
Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone

I loved this book. Why? It almost made me cry so many times! So many feels, so much sincerity and raw emotions! This book has triggers that may be severe for some readers, so please read with caution. But it also has bisexual awakening, so much angst and sweet moments at the same time, close knit family who love no matter what and much much steam.
I got to know more about Con, Lex and King – how they met and bonded, Lex’s difficult road to adulthood and his struggles with his health. Gideon, omg, that was just heartbreaking what he went through. But despite all that he still remained honorable man. Those two, the pull and push of their relationship was freaking awesome! I loved the heartache, the anger, the happy and the painful moments. It was perfect. It was everything I wanted it to be!
This is the second book in the “The Four” series, which is a spin-off of the awesome “Protectors” series. It can be read as a stand-alone but maybe it will be more enjoyable after also reading the first book “Forgotten: Luca”.
It has been some time since I got to read a “new” Sloane Kennedy book, so of course, I was over the moon when I found out about the release of this one.
This time we get Lex’s story, and I have got to admit I didn’t remember a single thing about him until I started reading, and then parts of it came back to me. For some reason, I have always been drawn mostly to King and so he was still the freshest in my mind from the first book.
The reason I didn’t remember a whole lot about Lex, also had to do with the fact that he didn’t play a really big part in the first book. The reason why will become fully clear after reading this one.
Lex has been dealing with an extreme complication of his diabetes. Having lived with diabetes since he was young, he knows the struggles of dealing with this disease. Unfortunately, this disease can also cause some major side effects and Lex will now have to deal and accept and turn parts of his life completely around.
He has decided to do this away from his over-protective brothers, who still don’t know anything about what is going on…well except for King that is…
Lex has tucked himself away in some remote cabin in Maine, where he will try to come to terms with the repercussions of his diabetes. So far he is NOT dealing…and he is not okay.
This is where Gideon comes in. He is the caretaker of the cabin that Lex is staying in and even though their meeting could have gone a bit better, they soon become “friends” of sorts and even learn to rely on each other. Of course, their “feelings” don’t just stop at “friendly”, which is especially shocking for Gideon who has only ever seen himself as straight. No worries though… he is pretty accepting of the fact that he is attracted to a man… We get some nice “exploratory” steamy scenes.
But both of these guys have a ton of inner demons they are fighting… So… it was a bit of a bumpy ride…
I am gonna be honest and say that Lex is not one of my favorite “Sloane Kennedy” characters. I know he had it hard but his running away and overreacting to certain situations (even though logical) got on my nerves a bit. Miscommunication, or in this case, non-communication really bothers me and leaves me yelling at my book!!
I don’t like yelling at my book and my family likes it even less 😛
I also felt a bit disappointed with the lack of “Lex’s brothers” in this one. I would have liked a bit more about them, instead of Gideon’s family. For some reason to me, it felt like Gideon’s family was more important, while we (or I at least) still know how hard things where for Lex’ brothers in the previous book, especially Luca. This book made me feel as though the brothers are really growing apart and that makes me a tad bit sad.
So this one didn’t leave me with the satisfying feeling I normally have when closing one of Sloane’s books. I did, however, appreciate the little snippet we got at the end about Lex and Gideon going to Vegas to check on Con. It gave me some hope when it comes to Lex and Con’s brotherly bond…
Now, we can’t love them all the same and I am particularly a fan of badass alpha men. So I have this feeling that I am gonna absolutely love Con and King’s books. They have been my two favorites since they were first introduced. With the little hints given in this one….and I hope I am right about those… King’s book should especially rock!!
That said, I am sure all the hurt/comfort lovers out there are gonna be all over this book !!
PS: an extra 10 points for Brewer !! He deserves it 😉
I just love Sloanes books, and this spin off series is just as good as the others.
The intrigue, twist and heartache in these books is enough to bring you to tears but then the next chapter you have a great big grin on your face.
So well written with great characters and a great storyline.
Thank you sloane for writing such great books for me to immerse myself in.
It’s been a while since I read the books related to this book but it didn’t really matter much in terms of the main story between Lex and Gideon. It helps towards the end to have some recall of the previous books but it’s not essential.
In this book, Lex has taken off to the wilds of Maine without telling anyone where he is to come to terms with the state of his life now, namely, that’s all most completely lost his sight, which means he’s also lost his career. He’s keeping it all a secret from his overprotective brothers, though King knows a bit more than the others. The first day in the cabin he’s rented he meets the caretaker, Gideon, who is also hiding out, avoiding people thanks to a tragedy he doesn’t want to talk about or deal with. Lex is rude and obnoxious so Gideon figures he’ll just stay away but when he checks the cabin the next day after a storm has hit he realizes that Lex needs his help.
The path of the romance is not an easy one and the author does such a great job pulling you in that you feel intensely for these two men and the horrible pasts. And then just as things seem to be on track along comes another bomb to blow things up. It’s a sweet romance with just the right amount of tension and suspense to have you holding your breath with worry.
The one step forward, two steps back could get old but Kennedy does such a great job giving you the character POV in each case you can understand it.
Great book, though I’ve never read a book by Kennedy that I didn’t completely enjoy. Strongly recommend.
Wow the emotions in this book and the feelings we ‘see’ of Lex is brill! The connection between the 2 MC is there right from first meet and we see more of the love between the brothers that we saw in Book 1!
Book two of The Four series by Ms. Sloane Kennedy, a spin-off from The Protectors series. I love all of Ms. Kennedy’s books, so much! This is no exception!
So we know that Vaughn has 4 brothers, Luca, Lex, Con and King. In Book One, Luca and Remy’s story, we found out that their brother has been avoiding them and has only communicated with King. They are assured that he is alright though although he just up and left his thriving Online Gaming business to capable hands.
Lex has been coping with one sickness into another for most of his life so when he was diagnosed with an irreversible condition, he decided to keep it from his brothers in order not to see them suffer with him thru different trials and failures when it comes to finding a cure, well, except for King. He then further decided to go off grid after his final diagnosis.
Gideon has been the caretaker of some cabins in Fisher Cove for a few years now. He is used to rich people wanting to go off grid from a chaotic life in the city. But he has never met anyone like Lex before. He has been on his own since he lost his family over a decade ago.
A love story with the signature angst that Ms. Sloane Kennedy is known for, and I so love! I love how each character has had experiences that I would probably not survived in its harshness and heartbreaking sadness. What I also love about these Alpha Males are the fact that even in their vulnerability you can sense how strong they are and how they are still fighting even when the odds are against them. I love this series as much as I love all the other series under Ms. Sloane Kennedy’s name!
The emotions in Lex and Gideon’s love story were so strong that they sucked you in and didn’t let you go. I could not put down this story as we see how Lex deals with his newfound disability and how he finds love blindly with Gideon who has deep past wounds of his own. These men do get a beautiful happily ever after and sets the stage for the remaining two brothers!
What an emotional read, the tears never stopped. The book was so good though, I loved it! My heart broke for Lex and I wanted to hug him a lot and then there’s Gideon, I cried for him too & wanted to hug as well. I loved them both & I’m glad they found each other. A very good but emotional story. Looking forward to read Con’s story next!
Sloane Kennedy does it again!! I can’t get enough of her writing and her characters. Her characters and her storyline are so we’ll developed that I can’t put the books down. I get so emotionally invested, I feel like I know the characters personally and I feel what they are going through. This book is hot but I also had tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. So many emotions and so hot too!! Now to wait for the next book!!
