The Targeted Pawn is a suspenseful romance story that delivers a feel-good ending. It’s nice to read about a heroine who is a bit older, thirty-nine to be exact, who, after a failed marriage to “Dr. Deceitful,” a creep if there ever was one, is determined to start a new life. Taking a risk, she takes a job in Emma Springs, Montana as a welder. Her boss, whom she dubs “Bull Boss,” for his cantankerous personality, at first, doesn’t seem like much of an improvement over her husband. Rane Calderon, a descendant of the Blackfeet tribe, has a real distaste for women and a load of secrets that keep him from ever finding happiness. He’s a cattle rancher and tough coot to boot.
But…love has a way of taking root sometimes in the most unexpected places. But even if these two disparate people were to find a way to each other somehow, there is a whole load of trouble coming their way. A husband who will do whatever it takes to get what he wants and a cattle rustler with designs to destroy Rane and steal his ranch.

Elon’s soon-to-be- ex continues to cause trouble forcing her to leave Seattle and take a job in familiar Emma Springs, Montana featured in the first two books in the series. A contentious start with her new boss, Rane, turns into an unwanted attraction. This romantic suspense is packed with danger, love, heartbreak, deceit, and loyalty. It’s obvious the author is a horsewoman and knows her away around a ranch with her attention to detail. The descriptions are exceptional, the story intriguing and emotional, and the characters real. Definitely worth the read! I received the ARC in return for an honest review.
The Targeted Pawn is a perfect title for this amazing book by Sally Brandle! Elon Hardy has been locked in a strange marriage for nearly twenty years! Her husband has cheated on her, stolen from her, and abused her verbally and emotionally! The result is a total lack of self confidence. As a result Elon is alone except for her twin sons. When her doctor husband filed for divorce she decides to leave Seattle. 747 is the magic number. No, not the airplane, but the number of miles from Seattle to Emma Springs, Montana and the Calderon Cattle Ranch.
Rane Calderon was betrayed by a young woman when he was very young and he has carried his distrust into his early forties! You can imagine his surprise when Elon shows up as his new welder and cook. He doesn’t want a woman on his ranch. Nor does he think she can weld! Elon is determined and he agrees to give her a thirty day trial.
A lot can happen in thirty days! A slow burn romance, an attempted murder, and continuing attacks on the ranch to name a few.
This is my first book by Sally Brandle and I will definitely be reading more by her.
I received this as an ARC from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.
If you are into non-stop peril. Really. Non Stop. Pure heroine, woman-hating hero, second chance romance, evil doers galore. Scuzzbags to hate, animals to love, great cooking, a cattle drive and guest appearances from charatacter you know if you read the other Emma Springs books. Have fun!
Once again Sally Brandle takes us through a swirling range of emotions surrounded by mystery and suspense.
Even as Elon is traveling to her new job, her almost ex is causing her problems. The man is as evil as they come and she hasn’t been able to prove anything against him.
In order to keep her children in college she needs this job that comes with room and board. She just hopes she remembers enough about welding to pass the muster.
As she nears her destination, she witnesses a dog thrown out of a truck and immediately rescues the pretty pup. Now she has a pet and still has start her job.
Now aside from the shock Rane gets at Elon being a woman, he also has reservations about her abilities as a welder.
Then there’s the mystery factor when someone starts taking pot shots at folks.
Plenty of suspense and the romance between Rane and Elon grows slowly but surely into something so much more. Even as her ex is making her life miserable financially.
We get to see the folks from the other books as well as Red the donkey. I love them all so much!
I hope this series continues, I love all the characters I’ve met so far, well except for the bad guys.
I’ve been waiting and waiting for the next book in this series! I love the characters in these books and the suspense that the author creates from her scumbag evildoers trying to hurt women that have an inner strength they didn’t know they had until faced with circumstances that brings out the best in them! Each book has just gotten better! Rane needs a welder and a cook on his ranch so he hires Elon Hardy thinking she’s a man – he wont have another woman messing with his life and what kind of name is ELON for a woman anyway? When Elon shows up, he wont let her stay but how can he let her go when he hears her story? Ok, a one month trial but that’s it…at the end, she’s gone! Elon has the most deceitful, creepy, egotistic, almost ex-husband you’d want to meet. She’s got to get away from him before he does something to her! She’ll leave the state and work for someone like Rane just to earn some money to keep her sons in college! What both of them don’t realize is there are targets on both of their backs and they better be ready for danger at every turn! I couldn’t put this book down! I loved it!
