Finally! It was well worth the wait for Kane Highwater’s book. A tormented hero, a compassionate, strong heroine and a story we’ve been wondering about from the first book in the series. Classic Justine Davis–touching, emotional and just plain wonderful.
Wow! Wonderful story!
Out of all of the books in this series, this one has to be my favorite. Kane Highwater left town right after his father’s death. Kane basically disappeared off the face of the earth for intensive purposes. It seems like he is running for his life. And in many ways, he is.
Lark LeClair is a social worker and a friend of Sage Hightower. She has made it a crucial part of her work as a social worker to work with children who have been abused and abandoned. She admires the Hightower clan for never giving up on looking for Kane no matter how slim the lead or how old.
Lark accompanies the Hightower clan to a national reining competition in Oklahoma City and spots someone who she thinks is Kane but loses sight of him. And when she spots him again, she follows him. This is the setup to the Hightowers finding Kane and bringing him home back to Last Stand.
The relationship between Lark and Kane is an interesting one to watch develop. Both of them have issues they need to resolve in order to have a strong, healthy relationship. But both want to make it work.
The emotions in this book are strong ones and complex ones. And everything happens in a very short space of time which can be hard to realize.
Although it can be read as a stand alone, I believe it is better read after reading the first four books in the series. These books set up the family dynamic and a lot of the history that is resolved in this book.
I have pretty much been reading Ms. Davis’ books since her first ones were published and they have never failed to amaze me with how well written and researched they are. I am looking forward to more of her books coming out hopefully soon.
Justine Davis is one of my favorite authors. Lone Star Homecoming was a wonderfully romantic book.
The final chapter in the Highwater family series. This is a must read. It will keep you going till the end.
It’s always a bittersweet moment for me when any series comes to an end, especially one as enjoyable and emotion-packed as ‘Texas Justice‘. I’ve been swept up in this world since the beginning, the only thing missing was Kane’s story – and it was so well worth the wait. I’m sorry to see this series end, but I’ve read that there is another series set in Last Stand in our future and I’m definitely looking forward to that. But for now… Kane and Lark’s story.
‘Lone Star Homecoming‘ not only concludes the series but it gives us Kane’s point of view of the events that prompted his gut instinct to run, where he’s been these long thirteen years as his family searched for him, and how, with the love of one very unique woman and his siblings Kane can begin to mend – especially as the past is far from what Kane has believed all of these years.
It’s difficult for me right now to find that fine line between saying enough and far too much about Kane and Lark’s story. I don’t do spoilers so I’m simply going to ask you to read the Cover Description and trust that there is an amazing, emotional story within. I loved Lark, she’s down to earth, she is exactly the person Kane needs in his life right now and in the future. An instant attraction oftentimes feels more like a slow burn as these two get to know each other in unusual circumstances. Kane is such a wounded soul for he’s been carrying around a heavy burden for far too long. Understanding the actual facts, seeing that his siblings love him, and don’t hate him is a bit of a miracle for Kane that he’s having trouble believing and trusting in. Lark may have started out as a buffer, a bridge between Kane and his family, but she quickly moves on to be a vital part of his future life.
My heart broke for Kane, it’s that simple. Watching him heal, learn to trust again, and find everlasting love with Lark was such an emotional, touching journey. I suppose you “could” read ‘Lone Star Homecoming‘ on its own but then you’d miss getting to know the other amazing, interesting characters who make up this world – and their stories are well worth the time and effort. I will miss the Highwater family very much, but Last Stand, Texas is a small town, and who knows, we might meet up with old book friends one day. I had fun with this series, this final story, and would, without hesitation, recommend the entire series to any reader who loves good, strong love stories that will touch your heart.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Lone Star Homecoming by Justine Davis
He’s haunted by one mistake…
Kane Highwater has been on the run for over a dozen years, since he was sixteen. And every step of the way he’s carried the weight of what happened the day he left Last Stand. He’d reacted in fear and anger, and it had cost him everything.
He stirs her heart in a way she never imagined…
Lark Leclair admires the Highwater clan for many things, including how they’ve never stopped searching for their missing brother. As a former Child Protective Services worker, she understands better than most why he’d run. But when she spots Kane in a crowd at a national reining competition where her friend — his sister — is competing, it will take all of her experience, compassion and instincts to convince him to stay.
Their attraction is immediate, but Kane is certain he can never regain his place in his legendary family. Can Lark convince him that with her by his side, it’s not too late for a fresh start?
This is Lark Leclair and Kane Highwater’s story.
Lark Leclair sat up groggily, so sleepy she wasn’t even awake enough to get angry about the double attack that had awakened her on the one morning she’d planned to sleep in. Yet. The rhythmic thumps from her right told her Jimmy Alvarez was wide awake and bouncing his soccer ball in the apartment again.
Lark rose hastily and headed for her bathroom before she had to listen to screaming from both sides: Anita, Jimmy’s sweet mom yelling at him to stop.
The man known lately as Kane Travis stood staring at a sight he’d never thought to see. The green waves of the Northern Lights rippled in amazing motion across the dark sky. He could still see some stars through the green, as if it were nothing more than a veil, some thin curtain blowing in the wind.
Except there was no wind— it was dead calm, which made it all the more eerie. He’d never thought to see any stars that could rival those over Texas, but he was thinking Alaska might give them a run.
Lone Star Homecoming by Justine Davis is a 4 star book.

I have been waiting for Kane’s story since I read the first book in this series. Kane and Lark’s love story in Lone Star Homecoming by Justine Davis, book five in her Texas Justice series, reminds us of family love and support comes in all sorts of ways and that forgiveness is possible.
Since that day thirteen years when Kane fought with his father, Kane Highwater has carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. Every step, every location, every thought, he has never forgotten that day when he let fear and anger cost him everything; his family and his home. Former Child Protection Service worker, Lark Leclair, has admired the Highwater for many of the things they do for the town of Last Stand, including the never-ending search for their missing brother. She understands probably better than most people why he would run. When Lark spots Kane in a crowd at a national reining competition it will take all of her experience, compassion, empathy, and instinct to convince him to stay. Kane never forgot his siblings, especially the special connection with his sister Sage. When he discovers her competing in reining competition, he finds a way to watch her compete. Every instinct tells Kane to run again, especially when this “stranger” brings him Sage and his brothers. Kane is positive that he will never regain his place, or truly belong, in his legendary family. Now it is up to Lark to work with the family to help convince Kane he is not responsible for the death of their father and that he needs this fresh start back in Last Stand with his family and Lark.
The attraction between Kane and Lark is immediate; for some reason he trusts her and believes in her. These two share a strong magnetism and have off the chart chemistry. Not only that, it’s almost like they can read each other’s mind and Lark seems to know Kane better than he knows himself.
Ms. Davis wrote a wonderful and emotional story that is definitely not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with a strong attraction, sizzling chemistry, family love and acceptance and a cast of charming characters giving Kane the forgiveness, support, and love he so desperately needs. I highly recommend Lone Star Homecoming to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This is a story that will tug at your heartstrings and is the perfect way to end our tome with the Highwater family
I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. I had been waiting for this book for months. I read all the books in this series and I couldn’t wait to finally read Kane’s story and see what had happened to him. Each of the 4 prior books gave us a hint at his life since he ran away 13 years earlier. This book was well worth the wait. I reread each of the 4 prior books so it would all be fresh in my mind. I loved this book and the whole series.
I had wondered how Kane would be finally reunited with his family. Justine did not disappoint with the story. He came to the arena in Oklahoma to see his sister Sage in her reining competition with Poco, her horse. He had seen a flier and learned that she was one of the featured competitors. Lark, a friend of the Highwaters sees him in the arena recognizing him and confronting him, confirming he is indeed Kane Highwater. They were a couple of years apart in school, so they hadn’t known each other. She had worked with child protective services before switching to an adoption agency. She was very compassionate and played on Kanes’s feelings for his sister to get him to stay and go see his family.
Kane’s instinct was to run. He felt unworthy of his family and their name because he learned he had a different father and thought he killed their father when he pushed him in anger. His brothers and sister are unaware of the things he has believed that made him run. The initial meeting is very awkward and uncomfortable with everyone wondering about Kane and his past 13 years. He starts to feel more comfortable around Lark as they talk. He is told they expect him to return with them to his home in Last Stand. He’s not sure about this as he thinks he will be arrested. He agrees to ride with Lark and she is quite proficient at learning information about his past to try to help him accept what has happened.
This story made me cry and also feel happy as Kane passes through various steps toward gaining his life back and re-joining his family. Justine Davis is a favorite author of mine and I highly recommend this book and the series. I liked all the Highwater siblings and their significant others and was glad they all played a part in this final story.
Lone Star Homecoming (Texas Justice, #5) by Justine Davis is the book this series has been building up to with each of the four past books. While each of Kane’s siblings have found peace, happiness and love they never stopped looking for their little brother. Finally the time for a reunion has come after he has been gone twelve long years. Time enough for him to go from a run-away teenager to a man of integrity.
Kane’s story is a beautiful, intensely emotional story. What ever I was expecting and I will admit I was expecting a lot from Justine Davis, this book surpasses it all, marking her in my eye as a true master storyteller. It’s time to unload the guilt but Kane can only do that with his family’s help and support. Memorable characters in an unforgettable story I highly recommend reading it with a tissue in hand. Of all the Last Stand, Texas families, I have come to love this one the most.
I am sure some would say it is a stand-alone story. However, I recommend reading the series in order to get the others’ perspective on the circumstances surrounding his leaving, the effects of Kane’s leaving on each of them and the continued search for him.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sorry to see this series end,I enjoyed reading about the Highwater ‘s. Kane Highater has been away from the family for more then a decade and was finally spotted at his sister’s competition by a family friend .Lark is able to gain his trust along with his heart ,will it be enough to keep him in Texas or will he leave again?
Justine Davis’ fifth book in the Lone Star Justice series, Lone Star Homecoming, was the perfect culmination of all the books in the series. With a plethora of heart warming, breaking, and sighing moments this definitely is a story I would term as a page turner. Kane and Lark’s story is truly one that literally brought me to tears on one page, and then had me chuckling on the very next…there are a myriad of emotions to be experienced within this story, and is one I can see myself reading time and again.
This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
Kane has been on the run for the last twelve years, he has now returned home to Last Stand. He left home on a preconceived misconception. He will finally see how his family sticks together through thick and thin. Then there is slow burn romance of instant attraction between Lark and Kane.
Loved these characters along with the siblings. Great character development. It shows how important family is. I thought the actual romance was a little rushed at the end. This is the fifth book in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. Believe me, I have not read the first four but I am planning on now.
4.5
Loved it!
I enjoyed revisiting the Highwaters of Last Stand.

A highly emotional read.
When Kane Highwater was sixteen, he found out the man who had been raising him really wasn’t his father. They ended up arguing and then Kane ran. He traveled the country and didn’t look back for thirteen years. Now that Kane is back home, he still isn’t sure if he fits in with his siblings and it causes him to wonder if he should leave again. But there was one person Kane didn’t want to hurt, Lark Leclair.
Lark was friends with the entire Highwater family, but she only knew Kane from conversations with his siblings and a picture they used in their search for him. It was Lark who spotted Kane in Oklahoma where Sage, Kane’s sister, was competing at the NRHA Derby. During the drive from Oklahoma to Last Stand, Texas, Lark and Kane got to know each other pretty well and they soon formed a relationship. But will it be enough when Kane’s urge to flee becomes real again?
The author did a great job outlining the characters in this book. But it took a little while for me to catch on as there were so many characters. At first, I found myself having trouble keeping them separate. But once I moved further into the story, they started falling in place. I could really feel the pain and struggle Kane had with his identity. I really liked how Lark and Kane took their time to know each other before jumping off into a romantic relationship. If you’re looking for an emotional romance with strong family ties, this is the book for you.
Fantastic! Amazing storytelling! I loved everything about this all-the-feels novel!
Most readers have that one special book they are anticipating. I actually have several, however none has had me as impatient with the release of Lone Star Homecoming.. This is the last Highwater sibling to have his story told, to finally have his happy ending. And in my opinion, there is no hero, for me, that I have read of this year that deserves it more. If you read any of the previous books in the Texas Justice series then you already know why I feel that way.
Kane Highwater has been missing, on the run for thirteen years due to a family tragedy that he blamed himself for. I won’t go into details here but I will remind you that in these amazing books we read, situations are often not how they appear. But for Kane, he saw the situation only one way. He lived and struggled for a long thirteen years believing he was guilty. Maybe he was a bit. Maybe he wasn’t. This author will have you loving and even protecting Kane no matter the outcome because he was so deserved of good things. Thirteen years of believing a certain way will play havoc on your mind when all the truths are revealed. Sometimes the truth is hard to deal with mentally and as a result, Kane was an emotional wreck, an intensely complex character. He couldn’t trust the love he was given by his family; Kane was in fear of what would come to end to the years of torment he was gone.
This book, or I should say this series has amazing characters. I love all the Highwaters and their significant others. Additionally, in this last book of the series, I appreciated the presence of everyone, the love and loyalty they all had for Kane. I especially loved Lark Leclair.
Lark was in social services by profession. She was caring, loving and protective of those she helped, especially children. When Lark finds herself face to face with the missing Highwater, one look at him opens all kinds of feelings. First and foremost, she was protective of Kane and became his liaison with the family. Lark knew that if they weren’t careful, Kane would run. And this time, if he ran, they had no doubt it would be for good. As I mentioned earlier, I won’t give away any spoilers. Every second of this angsty conclusion is worth the wait. If you’re like me, then you’ve been waiting for Kane for what feels like forever. Also, if you’re like me, you will be thrilled with the resolution.
One more aspect I’d like you to know is that while this book wasn’t lengthy, all the feels were there. Nothing felt rushed to me. I loved the anticipation of what was to come and nothing I’ve read in recent months left me feeling so relieved and whole-hearted than Lone Star Homecoming.
I definitely recommend this book. While it can be read on its own, I truly believe you will have an even better reading experience if you read the previous books in the series. Even if you just read the two books prior you will love everything about Kane Highwater’s happily-ever-after.
This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it! 🙂
I was given an advance reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my review. This is book five of the Texas Justice series.
Loved the writing style in this one, loved the characters that made me really care about them, loved how it pulled me in from the first and best of all was catching up with the characters from the earlier books in this series and because I had felt their pain as they searched for their missing brother it was great to be back in Last Stand again, catching up with all the Highwater clan and their significant others as Kane was spotted for the first time in years. I hung on to every word right till the end.
This is a great story with well thought out characters, a tightly woven plot, and an excellent end to the A Texas Justice Romance series. It perfectly captures all the emotions, the misgivings, the insecurities, and the erroneous misconceptions that a runaway brother gone thirteen years goes through with the gentle help of a family friend.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
