Emma has a secret past, and she is stunned to learn her new position as a companion and governess to Eugenia will be in the home of Duke Rowley Knight, who may recognize her. Emma earned the position through the recommendation of her godmother, Knight’s aunt. Emma believes she can work to ready Eugenia for a London season while remaining invisible to Knight. So that is the book’s first plot. The second plot concerns the growing friendship between Emma and Eugenia as Emma tries to help Eugenia mature. A third plot centers on Heath, Knight’s brother, who leads a dissipated life in London, participating in duels of honor. The author weaves these plots together into an enjoyable and believable tale. A good read.
This is the 1st book I read by Elizabeth Johns. I’m sorry I stopped reading this story at chapter 3 because it didn’t grab my interest.
Oo lala! Wonderful read! The characters become friends as they make mistakes, correct them, are influenced by. & for them. All of this woven in a story!
This was another great book by Elizabeth Johns. As always, her characters were well-written and I immediately fell in love with them. You can tell Elizabeth writes from the heart.
Emma is down on her luck, but getting a job as the companion if the Duke of Knighton’s sister is really the best thing until she realizes she has secrets that may not stay hidden if she remains. Rowley Knight, the Duke of Knighton has sworn of marriage and keeps others at a distance. Unfortunately, Emma is not someone he can keep his mind off from. Especially when he has to keep rescuing her.
I absolutely loved this book and all of the characters. I look forward to the rest of the series.
I highly recommend all of Elizabeth Johns’s books. If you enjoy this book, you will also like the Lorring-Abbott series.
A good example of the historical/romantic genre.
Duke of Knight by Elizabeth Johns is a wonderful beginning to her Gentleman of Knights series. The characters come alive and the story is very engaging. I binge read it in several hours and could not put it down! I really liked how the characters were introduced. It was simple and easy to remember and I didn’t confuse characters like I find sometimes happens in different books. As a result I was able to get into the book and not lose my momentum trying to figure things out. The book ended far too quickly! I love the hero and heroine and am very intrigued by the other characters, especially Heath. It was a very enjoyable story and I can’t wait to read the next one. Highly recommend!
Elizabeth Johns writes well developed characters and plots and this is true to form.
She takes difficult situations and does not go into detail but gives enough to convey the horrors that can be.
Rowley is a man who became the head of his family at a young age and learned that he wasn’t always valued for who he was personally but what the world sees. So he puts his effort into his Dukedom and family.
Emma struggles with similar problems as what is seen outside but not necessarily what is inside. She has been left to provide for herself in a harsh world and so she focuses on survival.
When they are placed together they find the true selves of each other as well as discover what they have to offer if they are willing to let down their guard.
This is a clean romance but the villain and the related vices can be disturbing to read but the author handles it with taste.
I look forward to reading more of the siblings in the Knight Family.
Fairly good story, stereotypical characters
Good pacing and excellent description make the story readable and interesting. Unfortunately, the character list encompasses every Regency romance stereotype ever written.
Pure delight! A beautifully blended romance without too much drama.
Rowley Knight, Duke of Knighton, is too busy being a duke to bother with such nonsense as love especially as all any woman sees is the title not the man which he learnt to his cost. With three heirs, he is in no hurry whatsoever to succumb to the lures of the leg-shackles. He is content managing his siblings and estates, and avoiding Society whenever possible. If he can only find someone to manage his young sister, Eugenia life can go back to its proper order. Emma Lancaster’s father gambled away her family’s fortune leaving her hopes for a respectable marriage shattered. Destitute and near desperate, she accepted a job which resulted in her brother being ruined & leaving for America, now she’s accepted a position as a governess to a young lady at the recommendation of her godmother. Little does she know that her charge is the brother of the man she despises & who ruined her family.
This is the first in a new series & I was totally engrossed in it, I was drawn in from cover to cover & read it in two sittings & that was only as I fell asleep. Well written, with strong characters & a fast paced story all add to the enjoyment. I loved both Rowley & Emma, their verbal bantering was priceless & her defiance over headwear brilliant, although Emma started off by hating the Knights she could deny her attraction to the duke. The secondary characters also had depth & I look forward to the rest of the series
The Duke of Knight by Elizabeth Johns
Gentlemen of Knights Series Book One
Since he was fifteen, Rowley Knight, Duke of Knighton, had not only become the duke…but also had three brothers and a sister to look after. Now, Eugenia is sixteen and in need of a female. Not a duchess, as Rowley had no intention of marrying, but a governess. And his aunt has chosen one of her god-daughters for that position.
Emma Lancaster couldn’t believe her godmother had brought her to the one home she never would have wanted to be at. But she needed this position, for now. She would look for a new one as soon as possible. This duke saw way too much and when he figured out where he knew her from…well, she just needed to be gone before then.
A wonderful new series from this author. The Knight men are quite different. Rowley is responsible and…well, a duke. Heath is the rake. Edmund the vicar. Felix is in the army and not much is said about him yet. And then Eugenia…a very spunky, and a bit out of hand, but very endearing. Looking forward to more in this series.

I’m freaking excited for this new series by Elizabeth Johns. The Knight family has stolen my heart and I can’t wait to read about the lives and loves of this amazing dysfunctional family. While they have their issues you can tell that this family loves each other and would do anything for each other despite the flaws and failings.
Rowley Knight is the head of the family and has had the responsibility of taking care of his family from a very young age. He is weary of society and prefers to keep everyone but his family at arm’s length. He has no idea how to handle his sister who is becoming a woman so he reluctantly agrees to open his house to a stranger. While Rowley can be cold and unyielding, you can see that he truly loves his family and would do anything to protect them. Rowley truly has a good and kind heart and fights or those he loves and cares for.
I loved Emma and wanted to be her best friend. She was strong, determined and wouldn’t back down from a challenge. She and Rowley were initially at odds with each other but a good way. Emma had her secrets and was afraid to get close to Rowley for a feat of discovery. It was fun to watch these two get to know each other. They had great banter and always had a smile on my face seeing this two interact with each other.
The book also dealt with some serious issues that are not often found in historical romances and I quite enjoyed it. It brought realism to the story and elevated it above the typical romance.
Secrets
Emma Lancaster finds herself in a precarious position. Her godmother has unknowingly placed her as a companion with the Duke of Knightley’s sister. Her only hope is she isn’t recognized for a discretion from the past, but secrets have a way of coming out. The attraction between Emma and the Duke grows stronger and her first response is to runaway. When she’s kidnapped everything changes including love. Well written and an easy read.
What’s not to love about a family of Knight’s? Of course, that is their surname but four brothers and one sister begin the start of this new series. If this first one is any indication, sit back and prepare to love this family!!
Rowley Knight, the Duke of Knighton, our hero, is the eldest with all of the responsibility of three younger brothers and of course his sixteen year old sister, which was presenting the most pressing problem. How difficult could it be to find her a companion-governess job for Eugenia? Actually very, until his Aunt Violet had recommended Miss Lancaster.
When her father gambled away all their money, Emma Lancaster had no choice but to find a position. With the help of Lady Hambridge, her godmother, she obtained the job as companion to her niece, Lady Eugenia. Little did she know, her brother the duke, was the man she despised most in the world. She prayed he did not recognize her.
Oh yes, this could get interesting and boy did it ever!! He, with all his worries and structure and she, with her own emotions and sad happenstance as to where she ended up.
A marvelous tale with a Knight that you could not help but love. He needed someone to love and love him in return and Emma needed the same. I could only sigh as I turned the pages, while my heart smiled at the end. Just perfect.
Rowley Knight, Duke of Knighton is needing to hire a governess and companion for his sixteen old sister Eugenia, one who can teach her how to act in London society. His Aunt recommends her goddaughter, Emma Lancaster. Rowley senses there is something Emma is hiding, besides her hair under those ridiculous caps she prefers to wear. Not too long ago Rowley and the Knight family destroyed her family and she was forced to find work, but she needs to disguise herself to keep her secret from being revealed.
Rowley is a reserved man, he doesn’t trust easily and Emma sends up red flags, but he cannot seem to resist her charms. Emma and Eugenia get along pretty well, Emma speaks her mind to the Rowley further intriguing him. When Emma’s secret is revealed she’s placed in danger and Rowley knows he has to rescue her, the Knight family owe her for ruining her family name. I loved the witty banter between Rowley and Emma as they spare over Eugenia we see them growing closer, each trying to deny the attraction. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
Duke of Knight by Elizabeth Johns is number 1 in the Gentlemen of Knights series. Rowley Knight inherited the dukedom when his father died, along with his four younger siblings. His main concern right now was finding a companion/governess for his sister Eugenia, who was now in her teen years and very emotional and unrestrained. Frankly, it got on his nerves. He certainly could not allow her in society as long as this behavior persisted. He needed someone to take her in hand and had been in touch with various agencies in his pursuit of the perfect person, but thus far had not found her. His Aunt Violet was bringing a young woman to tea that seemed the perfect solution. His man of business had investigated her and found nothing amiss. The young lady in question is Miss Emma Lancaster who would be perfectly suited except Rowley felt she was hiding something. Not to worry. He would find out what. Meanwhile, Emma got along very well with Eugenia and seemed to support her in every way. There was still something…
Loved this book. I always like it when a stubborn man is brought to heel. Rowley is nothing if not stubborn. All the Knights are, it seems. When Emma’s past is finally revealed, everyone seems anxious to take responsibility for it and her. This is definitely an unusual response, given the situation. It makes for a terrific story. Lady Hambridge, Rowley’s aunt, is a lovable character, easer to get along with than many of her ilk. Emma is just simply a sweetheart. She adores Eugenia and supports her growing up, something Rowley really does not, although it seems inevitable. Men aren’t always sensible. Rowley feels all his responsibilities far more than is really necessary and it makes him somewhat a bore, at first. Duke of Knight was an entertaining book full of likeable characters, even with their flaws and mistakes. I enjoyed the read. I recommend it.
I received a free ARC of Duke of Knight from Dragonblade in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.
