This damsel-in-distress thought she was spilling her secrets to a doctor. Turns out? The gentleman is an Earl. He’s also her new employer…Miss Adelaide is down on her luck and on the run when she finally collapses at Evercliff Manor. Perhaps it’s exhaustion that has her spilling her secrets to the kind doctor tending to her–or maybe it’s his warm, compelling eyes. Then again, maybe it’s just … it’s just another case of sheer bad luck.
It turns out the kindly doctor who now knows her deepest, darkest secrets is not really a doctor at all. He’s an earl. Worse, he’s her employer. If only she doesn’t lose her heart…

First time reading this author’s work. Enjoyed it so much, and anxious for more of these characters.
I used to describe Maggie Dallen as one of my very favorite YA romance authors. After reading several of her Regency romances, though, I’ve come to the conclusion that my description is t really fair as she totally masters these stories as well. Exhibit A is her latest, The Misadventures of Miss Adelaide: A Sweet Regency Romance (School of Charm Book 1). Romance twists and turns, a cruel guardian, a doctor who is much more: a wildly imaginative plot that’s still somehow Period appropriate. I loved Addie and Alec’s story and am sure that anyone who enjoys Regency Period romance (which I read tons – no pun intended – of) will love it just as much.
Addie swoons on the staircase just as the Earl was returning home from his travels. The Earl, Alec, caught her and gave orders to the housekeeper leading Addie to believe he was the doctor and when he confronts her about being a lady and not a true maid, she begs him not to tell the Earl. Oops! Addie has big danger that she is trying to escape from leading to big secrets. The Earl receives her trust but not enough to get her to tell him her secrets. But he continues to try to protect her and her baby brother which he assumes is her child born out of wedlock! A great story with a villain causing plenty of scary trouble for Addie as she falls for Alec.
What a lovely story. Full of understanding, suspense and romance. You can’t go wrong when reading any book by Ms Dallen and this one is no different. The characters were well written and very likeable. There was no sex in this book, it is just a nice quick and charming read. I found it hard to put down. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.
ONE MIND-BLOWING ADVENTURE!!!
Magnificent! Maggie brings it on home with this exciting approach, delivering one gripping storyline and nailbiting plot with all the acumen, proclivity and ingenuity, kicking this baby into a hissy with a stupefying, wicked culmination. A surging tempest full of horrendous circumstances and dreadful events, blasting those swirling emotions into play, while balancing on a razors edge. Witnessing the trials and tribulations, noting the astonishing twists and horrifying turns, probing for answers, testing our characters in ways they have never imagined. Disclosing a barrage of drama, intrigue, turmoil, abuse, deception, misgivings, danger and mounting suspense along with a boatload of trouble while dodging evil intents, you have one block busting masterpiece. The attraction and chemistry sizzles, alluring and mesmerizing, as each layer is peeled back exposing an undeniable connection and amplifying affection, grounding in it’s strength and awe-inspiring in it’s depth. The personalities are well matched and blend together smoothly. Boasting abundantly detailed descriptions intertwining each scenario with all the zeal and gusto bringing them to life before your eyes. Fantastic job Maggie, thanks for sharing this little fella with us.
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
What a dangerous and emotional story. The H and h were amazing. I loved their personalities. They were so raw, so realistic and quite spontaneous. Both were mature, honorable, loyal and thoughtful. Even though the h was running for her life to protect her baby brother, she had fortitude, inner strength; it was her fear that dictated her actions rather than common sense. But her fears were not unfounded. Her guardian was an evil wicked man who inflicted harm to her and her baby brother. She ran away and ended up in the employment of the H. He was the first man who saw her. Really saw her as she was. A frightened young lady with a baby. But the h was too afraid to let him get too close. Her guardian had everyone fooled that he was the life of the party and a wonderful person. But she experienced his dark side when others did not. She felt no one would believe her especially the H. The H did all he could to assist her and the baby. He felt compelled to protect her and stay near her. He could not explain what he was feeling but he knew it was strong and he knew she felt it as well. Then the crap hit the fan and the h felt she had to run again. The guardian was spreading lies about her mental capacity and was searching for her and the baby. Terrified she went to her lodgings to pack and get the baby. But the guardian was already there. They fought. The h did all she could to protect the baby. Just when she thought she had lost the fight; the H shows up and fights the guardian. He was furious at what he had seen. He had seen the guardian cruelly treating the h and fighting with her. What was going to happen? Would the H be able to overcome the guardian and have him arrested? And what about their relationship? What would happen? Would he find her too much trouble and a burden and let her go? Or would they take some time to explore what they felt between them? This is such an emotional story and it is definitely a page turner. This is a quick read and worth the time. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Running for their lives, Miss Adelaide has taken her baby brother and escaped her family home. Hiding in Evercliff Manor, Addie is exhausted both from unaccustomed hard work and sharing her meager portions of food with her brother. When she collapses, she did not intend to do so in front of the Earl of Tolston whom she mistakes for the doctor, nor did she intend spilling all her secrets to the compassionate man. Alec immediately realises that he cannot allow Adelaide to remain in his home and finds her a safe place to stay until he can work out how best to help her. His main problem is that she keeps running! This is a sweet Regency romance with some suspense, a cynical hero and a desperate young lady who doesn’t know whom to trust. The story is well written and engrossing and left me believing in romance all over again. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Miss Adelaide Hopewell is down on her luck and on the run, she secures a job as a housemaid but tired, hungry & desperate she finally collapses at Evercliff Manor. Perhaps it’s exhaustion that has her spilling her secrets to the kind doctor tending to her—or maybe it’s his warm, compelling eyes. It turns out the kindly doctor who now knows her deepest, darkest secrets is not really a doctor at all. He’s an earl. Worse, he’s her employer the Earl of Tolston. And he’s decided that Adelaide will be his next project. With his assistance, and the help of her newfound friends at the newly formed School of Charm, Miss Adelaide might just land on her feet.
I found myself totally engrossed in this book & I read it in one sitting & finished well past midnight. Well written with a very well paced story & lovely characters. There were secrets, assumptions, misunderstandings, all of which kept me turning the pages. I loved both Alec & Addie & how their relationship developed, he fell hard & fast & although she was very attracted to him it did take her time to learn to trust anyone. This is the start of a new series although we’d entered this world in the Earl of Charm, I look forward to more in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A sweet addition to the School of Charm series. This adventure features Miss Adelaide with her baby brother, Reggie, being hunted by her nefarious uncle. Along comes Alec who doesn’t know who she is but helps her all the same. The misunderstanding is quite harmless but very cute. Love ensues and we see their happy ever after. Sweet and clean.
I received a complimentary copy from the author.
