“Before I met you, I thought Nightmares were creatures of pain and darkness. Why, then, are you constantly seeking freedom and light?”Fortuna’s entire life has changed. She has no idea how to balance her new responsibilities and who she used to be. There are hundreds of faeries in her head, her brother seems to have lost touch with reality, and a werewolf won’t leave her side. Maybe the utter lack … side. Maybe the utter lack of control is why her abilities seem to be changing, as well.
Then there’s Collith. Enigmatic, beautiful, and infuriating. Not only a king of the faeries she despises so much, but also her mate. His gentle pursuit causes confusion in her normally unwavering relationship with Oliver.
As a result of it all, Fortuna now finds herself surrounded by new enemies and ones from the past. The question isn’t whether she is strong enough to make change in such a corrupt court.
It’s whether she will survive long enough to do it.

Restless Slumber is a cleverly crafted, unpredictable story that captivated me from the first pages. Stylistically, I love this author. The writing flows so well, the imagery and dialogue are excellent, the characters are well-layered, and the plot is filled with non-stop action. I also enjoyed the excellent use of symbolism and foreshadowing – fantastic!! I love how the author pulls you right into the story in such an immersive and gripping way and makes you care for the characters.
I also love the unpredictability of the characters and the plot. With so many twists and turns, it’s difficult to predict what is going to happen next, which makes for a gripping read. The plethora of morally grey characters and creatures add to the suspense and makes me constantly question the lines between good and evil. I love stories that keep me guessing, and Restless Slumber certainly does that!
The continued development of Fortuna and Collith’s characters is fantastic! I feel like Fortuna is only at the cusp of understanding her full powers. She is like a well of untapped potential, and I can’t wait to see her when her powers are fully realized. Collith is slowly learning to trust Fortuna with his secrets, and he shares much of his life with her in this book. I love their romance, though it is almost hard to put in words. They have a deep bond even though they barely know each other. They are connected on a visceral level, yet they don’t communicate well. I’m curious to see how their relationship progresses, especially after that epically devastating and shocking ending.
Let’s talk about that ending! Break my heart, stomp on it, then put it back in my chest to horrify and devastate me, only to leave me with a little sliver of hope. My mind is reeling, and I barely want to pause to write this review before I tear into the next book in the series.
The story also has some really cool dream sequences, which grow more and more volatile and disruptive. I am fascinated by this world and the person who inhabits it. What happened to Oliver? I want to know more about his story and reality and am curious if this will be explored in future books.
There are other potential romances in the series, and Fortuna seems immersed in a love square. I find this aspect of the novel interesting, as Fortuna is never really sure who she can trust, and she often refuses to fully give in to her feelings. I’m curious to see how book three addresses the complex relationships Fortuna has with the men in her life.
Another thing I’m really enjoying in the series is that the minor characters are just as interesting as the major characters. Sutton created a world full of werewolves, zombies, witches, necromancers, fairies, demons, and more, each with distinct and fascinating stories. I love that, though the focus isn’t solely on these characters, their stories and world are just as deftly developed and dynamic as Fortuna’s.
This is an amazing, dark, twisted, and well-developed story that I am obsessed with!! I can’t wait to begin the next book and am so thankful to the author for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Restless Slumber (Fortuna Sworn Book 2) Kindle Edition
by K.J. Sutton
“Fear is a seed, my love. It can grow from pain or anger… or it can grow from something else. Love. Hope. You are not a monster, Fortuna Sworn. Concentrate on the good, take it into you, and let the rest go.”
Thank you to KJ Sutton for the complimentary review copy. I am choosing to leave an honest and fair review
This is one of those series that I really want in paperback. It is just that good. Whether it is the complex universe of Faerie and other Fallen, or the deep relationships between Fortuna, the Nightmare, and her friends, I am just overwhelmed with the beauty of this series. Filled with a rich, deep and consistently surprising mythology and world. The world is half a step away from our own, filled with the Fallen, those who didn’t fight on either side during the First War In Heaven. Fortuna is a Nightmare, capable of dragging out someone’s deepest fear and filling them with potentially deadly terror. In the previous book, bearing her name, she marries he Unseelie King Collith and gains a werewolf, a bodyguard and a crown when all she was really looking for was her missing brother, Damon.
Restless Slumber goes further and eventually strikes a heart-punch to the reader. It was an end I just didn’t see coming. Fortuna is learning that not everything she does can be undone. She is also becoming a Queen of Legend.
The tension between Fortuna and her Faery Mate, keeps the book going. We are always rooting for them, no matter how impossible things may seem.
Ms. Sutton has a master’s craft with words, images, similies and metaphors. At times, her talent creates images so real, you can smell the snow, the blood and the rot of bodies. Truly amazing writing.
The end was such a shock and so well laid out, that I simply am dying to read the next book. Unfortunately, I have to wait for Winter 2020.
I highly recommend this book and all those in the series.

This is book 2 of the series ! If you haven’t read book one yet you need to read that first !
I really enjoyed this installment ! It was full of adventure, suspense , mythical creatures , paranormal powers , growth of characters and some surprises/shocks along the way !
Fortuna sworn is a nightmare . Her power is fear. But she’s different and her mate Collith (who I love by the way! ) sees that the most in her !
“Before I met you, I thought Nightmares were creatures of pain and darkness,” Collith said softly. One of the pieces lodged in my throat. “Why, then, are you constantly seeking freedom and light?”
Collith is a fairie king who somewhat tricked Fortuna to become his mate in book one , and in this book is trying to win her heart . He’s so patient and kind to her and I really fell for him in this book ! The growth of their relationship is gradual but sweet.
“Maybe Collith had brought me here for reasons even he wasn’t aware of. I was the fire to his ice. The shout to his whisper. The run to his walk.”
Along the way there are other relationships that grow and change too. There’s Laurie – another fairie king who has a history with Collith that remains mysterious but we find out pieces of the puzzle , Lyari who is fortunas right hand , Oliver her man in her dreams and best friend (who I secretly hope is a real person who’s soul is connected to hers somehow hehe ) ; Finn the werewolf who won’t leave fortunas side and of course Damon , fortunas brother who has to learn to forgive Fortuna for what happened in book 1. These characters are all wonderfully written and explored along the way . There’s still a lot of unanswered questions though and I’m looking forward to reading more about them as the series continues .
On top of all that Fortunas powers are growing after her coronation as queen . She has to learn what she can do and how to control herself within that . Collith is a key support for her in this .
“Fear is a seed, my love. It can grow from pain or anger… or it can grow from something else. Love. Hope. You are not a monster, Fortuna Sworn. Concentrate on the good, take it into you, and let the rest go.”
Fortuna is outspoken and not afraid to fight for what she believes ! This of course gets her in all sorts of trouble and makes for a great story !
The world this author has created is enthralling and captivating ! Really well written and definitely worth diving into !!
I can’t wait for the next book !
Faced with so many threats against her and her brother Damon, Fortuna decides that it’s time to get away from the Unseelie Court and return home… at least for a while. It’s also the perfect opportunity to find the pack of that werewolf who is so faithful to her and never separates from her side, so he can finally reunite with his own. However, all her plans crumble at every new obstacle in her path. Fortuna must face terrible creatures, from fae and werewolves, to a very angry witch, while trying to decipher the depth of her power that drags her more and more into the darkness.
I had a love/hate relationship with Fortuna in this book. On the one hand, I loved her strength and courage, I loved her power and the creativity that it created, the way it grew and transformed into something really dark. But on the other hand, I didn’t like that her impulsive nature got her into so many problems, in addition to her distrust and incessant indecision when it came to trusting Collith. It’s just that Collith was so beautiful in this book. He was so patient, so kind and understanding. He had some really beautiful and very sweet gestures, and also he’s learning to trust, revealing some of his secrets that broke my heart and allowed us to know him much better.
I also liked Laurie much more in this sequel. In fact, I think he was my favorite character. He becomes much more open, more daring and playful. His carefree and funny personality made me love him and of course I loved his spicy interactions with Fortuna. And with Collith. His constant attempts to cause chaos and discord created really funny scenes that left me smiling. And then we have Oliver in his most vulnerable and desperate phase, since Fortuna is forgetting him. The perfect and sweet boy finally shows his most sensitive and… human side. My heart broke for Ollie, thinking of all the suffering he was going through. But at the same time, all that pain led him to overcome himself, creating stunning dream landscapes. The settings represented through Fortuna’s dreams were so beautiful and creative, so unique and full of imagination. They were amazing and blew my mind.
Finally, we have Finn the werewolf, who is very mysterious and I feel that he has a lot of secrets. I love his loyalty to Fortuna and I’m very curious about him. The truth is there are a lot of new characters in this book, a great diversity in personalities, powers and type of beings, all of them very interesting. The display of supernatural creatures was impressive, I loved their gifts and that creepy touch that each of them had. We learn much more about werewolves, their customs and their nature, the dynamics of a pack. All this was so intriguing and at the same time really creepy because of the cruelty they showed.
The plot of this book was so interesting and it caught me in the story from beginning to end. I love the subject of this book and how everything complicates more and more with each page. There was so much action and adrenaline with epic battles, lots of adventure and fantasy in an impressive display of magic. It also had that dark and spooky touch that I love so much. In addition to new secrets being revealed and generating really good twists and turns. I loved that new things happened all the time, the creativity in this series is amazing and it hooked me in a really addictive reading. And the end destroyed me. It had such an impressive battle, the last pages of this book were amazing. I felt too many emotions with this story, it made me cry a lot and completely destroyed me. But I loved it too. However, that ending was so open and it left me like a crazy person dying to read the next book, absolutely obsessed with this story and its characters. I LOVED it!
Wow I loved this book
My late teens and early twenties were spent reading sci-fi and fantasy written by the likes of Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Katherine Kerr, Andre Norton, Julian May and David Eddings. That is were I learnt the patience of waiting for the next installment in a series, where I learnt that a cliff-hanger is not something to be feared but can be a thing of beauty and fell in love with all things fae.
K.J. Sutton is a new-to-me author who has instantly secured a slot on my “must buy” list. The story of Fortuna Sworn reeled me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. It took me a chapter or two to really get into the story, but once I did this became a book that I didn’t want to put down. In fact I became most irate when trivial things like work, kids needing food and sleep got in the way of my reading it.
This is a twisty tale of a Fallen one, a Nightmare, a seemingly normal girl with a hidden ability and her battle to rescue her brother. Damon has been missing for two years, when Fortuna discovers he is being held by an Unseelie fae she is prepared to do anything to win his freedom. That anything involves a mysterious fae who turns out to be a heck of a lot more important and powerful than Fortuna could ever have guessed.
Fortuna will face trials and battles that will stain her soul as dark as the blood she must shed. Those battles of wit, intelligence and cunning are woven into a complex tapestry of a story, one where you can never be sure if the person in front of her is friend or foe. Added into the mix is the mystery of Oliver, who should be just a figment of her imagination but who seems more real than it is possible for him to be.
Whilst Collith seems to be the forerunner as her love interest, there are hints at other possibilities too. The book is fairly slow burn and the sex scenes were fairly tame, making this a suitable read for older teens and upwards. I would recommend this to fans of Pippa DaCosta, Kate L Mary and Lexi C Foss, or anyone looking for a well written fantasy/paranormal story. I LOVED it and will be jumping straight in to reading the next one. I just hope book #3 is finished soon!
Going into the second book, I can say that the author has kept that originality to the series. This is so different from anything I’ve read. I’m invested in these characters, mainly Fortuna. I’m also so unsure of how I’m going to feel when this series is all said and done. This is going to be one of those series that could turn direction at any moment.
What I’m loving about this series so far, is Fortuna. She’s that underdog character that has more spine and gumption than the most powerful of species represented in this series. I find myself surprised when her weakness makes an appearance and she can’t overcome an obstacle.
This book has a dark flavor to it. I find myself feeling like Fortuna and wanting to step into light and get rid of that darkness that seems to pull on her constantly. It really has me riveted to what is going to happen next.
What I seem to struggle with more so far, is the romance aspect of this series. It’s there. There is just enough doubt to who is Fortuna’s real hero. Personally, I prefer one to stand out from the start. That’s part of the reason I am nervous about how everything will come to an end. It does look like we have many more books to come before we get there.
Overall, my feelings after book two is that this is a unique and compelling fantasy series that will grab you right from the start, and it holds your attention. It’s not predictable and you will be left constantly wondering what will happen next. I’m looking forward to what is to come.
This book continues where we left off previously and I was hoping maybe for some answers especially concerning dream Ollie and also Collith’s icy Assasin-ex lover down in his dungeons (forget her name).
But alas the mystery only deepens here and more questions have now arisen to join them.
So Fortuna now Queen of the Unseelie is back in the human world trying to adjust to her new reality.
She’s also packing some new companions: the Seelie king Laurie is her new bestie, she has a constant shadow in her new protective werewolf rescue, her reluctant right hand and bodyguard Lyari hates her as does her brother and somethings definitely off with the dreamscape and Ollie.
Regarding Fortuna’s relationship with Collith it is evolving into something much more tangible, becoming deeper and more intense, there bond growing and strengthening the more they lay themselves open and let down their natural guard.
I also felt that here we got a lot more of an insight into just who and what Collith is and how he ultimately ticks.
we also get some insight into his and Laurie’s current dynamic and just what went down between them to cause their initial rift.
I am also desperate to know just who and what Ollie is and where he actually comes into things as I do think there is some deeper significance and agenda ultimately at play here.
My heart was also hurting so bad for his pain and loss with Fortuna, it was just so sad how desperate he was to hold onto any small part of her.
I did feel that this had a slightly different vibe to its predecessor almost like all the players were being brought onto the board and placed strategically for some hidden purpose yet to occur.
This one really was action-packed throughout and that finale my god!!! my nerves are on edge and my heart well I think it’s shattered into a million pieces for Collith and Fortuna and where they are now at.
I am so very worried about the repercussions and consequences most likely heading there way.
Fortuna is evolving as a queen but also as an individual but her rashness and impulsiveness and the way she doesn’t always think her actions through may be her greatest weakness.
Collith helps counterbalance that to an extent and they really are polar opposites of each other which also is what makes them such a great fit together.
Each bringing something to the board the other lacks somewhat.
Don’t know how I’m going to wait until book three is out as its all the way into December it seems aeons away but needs must, I will be eagerly anticipating its release.
This is a fantastic urban fantasy series that I highly recommend, massive thumbs up from me.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Restless Slumber (Fortuna Sworn, #2)
