A Duke’s Charming Spy earns 5/5 Hopeful Hearts…Entertaining Fun!
Fanny Finch is one author who has feed well my passion for Regency era romances with lords and ladies and upstairs and downstairs dramas. The era offers many obstacles related to social class, financial status, and gender, but none more upsetting than the emotional fallout from an abandoned woman or the legal tradition for line of succession.
The Duke of Wallasey, James Hastings, has spent the past two years in the West Indies, but upon his return to England he finds his fiancée involved with another man and a cesspool of rumors and gossip swirling. His fiancée chose to take drastic measures to save her own reputation by spreading lies to ruin his and make her betrayal understandable and emphasize the dissolution of their engagement was instigated by her. So, he is disgraced, dealing with an invalid mother, and needs to find someone to help. Help arrives in the form of Alice Addington who, due to the line of succession and her refusal to marry the new lord of the manor, has lost her home, financial security, and any prospects. She also learned Hastings may be connected to her father’s death, so, by accepting a position to take care of James’s mother, she has the perfect chance to “spy” on him and serve up some revenge. However, it’s a Regency romance, so love just might win out!
Fanny Finch has penned a delightfully entertaining love-hate, revenge-renewal, comeuppance-reward scenarios. James and Alice in many ways are victims of their own circumstances, but no need to feel sorry for either; they are both strong, have others for whom they are responsible, and therefore, their happiness is one for which you’ll root. Karma is served to satiate my own desire for payback, and happy endings always fill my heart. Fanny’s writing style is filled with lovely images and varied personalities, clever situations and engaging predicaments, engaging narrative and Regency-style dialogue that makes this drama well worth reading! Charming!
What a roller-coaster ride! This book has mystery, danger, secrets, and a lot of emotional turmoil. I love the characters and was engaged with them from the beginning. The storyline is great and kept me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Regency Romances with a side of intrigue.
It’s actually 4-1/2 Stars. I dropped it because of some grammatical errors and complex sentences. However it’s a wonderful book and I recommend it without hesitation.
On a personal note, I’m sad that the author has opted to join others in the practice of manipulating readers into giving their email address to read the entire story. It’s not right.
What a story of greed, murder, deception, manipulations, scandal, spying and romance. The characters of the H and h were mature and strong. Nothing missish about her. Her devotion to her family was remarkable. She would do anything to secure the safety and happiness of her younger sister. Swayed by the lies of her cousin she assumed an alias and went to work for the H. The purpose was to spy on the H for her cousin who told her that the H was the reason her father was dead and why their fortunes were lost. But the H was not what she expected. He was a true gentleman; loved his mother and treated her with kindness and respect. He also was kind to his staff. She was shocked that he would be considerate of those working for him. The more she got to know him the more she realized that he could not be guilty of what her cousin accused him of. This was the turning point in the story. Scandal occurred the wrong people were blamed; the cousin was trying to manipulate the younger sister to his side by telling her more devious convincing lies; when proof of the cousin’s treachery was found the h realized her life was in serious danger. Thank goodness she had the H by her side. An exciting story filled with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged and intrigued. I do recommend this book.
I found this book to be a very delightful read with the well written storyline and characters that were so well created that I was totally captivated throughout the entire book!
OUTRAGEOUSLY AMAZING!!!
Superb! Fanny brings all the grace, passion and acumen into such a spectacular approach to this enthralling storyline and gripping plot, thrusting this gem into a hissy with a stupefying, eye-opening culmination. A raging tempest chocked full of stirring circumstances and inexplicable events blasts those swirling emotions into play front and center. Forging through the trials and tribulations, noting the astonishing twists and wicked turns, probing for answers, testing our characters in ways they could have never imagined. Unveiling a foray of drama, intrigue, misgivings, underlying threats and mounting suspense, blasting this baby to life beautifully. Add turmoil, betrayal, deceit and unexpected situations, along with a boatload of secrets and dodging calamity, you have one mind-blowing adventure. The characters are authentic and original with qualities and traits that transforms into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. Remarkable job Fanny, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
Love and deception…
James, the Duke of Hastings, has returned to England to claim his bride but discovers that she has found another love during his two-year absence and to excuse her faithlessness, she has spread lies about his character. If not for his mother’s injury, he would be turning his back on the gossipmongers and returning to the West Indies instead of interviewing young women to be her companion and caregiver.
Alice and Josephine are struggling with the grief of losing their father, the Earl of Drakemyre. They are now penniless with a mountain of debt from their father’s failed quest for fortune. Their cousin, Charles, will inherit the title and estates and although he seems determined to take care of them for the foreseeable future, Alice learns that his generosity comes with conditions that she is not willing to accept. She would rather find employment that will allow her and her sister to be independent until they can marry for love but she despairs of being hired with the cloud hanging over their family name. When Charles suggests a job caring for an elderly woman in the household of the man who drove the Earl to his death, Alice sees a way to avenge her father’s death and support her sister at the same time.
Fanny Finch knows how to create a perfect historical romance. Great characters, intrigue, romance and deception combined to create a beautiful story. I loved it!
