There is certainly a unique twist in this one. But it does take a while to get to it and to see how it fits into the overall plot. The character development is natural, and the situations are (unfortunately) realistic. I especially liked how it was difficult to tell who was hiding what at any given time. It definitely kept me guessing. For a full review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of the book.
K.L. Slater has another hit with her latest, Little Whispers. A tense and thoroughly enjoyable twisted psychological thriller! Set in an affluent neighborhood where everyone has secrets and if you trust the wrong person, it could mean you lose everything and everyone. There are many levels and layers which will keep you up very late!
First I want to thank K.L Slater, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
WOW!! K.L. Slater’s latest book Little Whispers totally reminded me of the prime time soap opera Desperate Housewives!! Another must read book filled with tons of secrets, suspense, major twists and turns, and even some shocking moments!
K.L. Slater does focus on some very important topics in her latest book. Some might trigger some readers. These topics are childhood bullying, suicide, and criminal activity.
This book hooked me right from the beginning as Janey’s Mom was dying and had a deathbed confession. Throughout the book it was kept a secret. Eventually it was intertwined with the other stories. But the not knowing what it was made the book more interesting.
K.L. Slater wowed me with her character selections, their personalities, their roles in the book, etc. Each one was totally different and unique and brought something very special to the book.
I had a huge soft spot for Janey and Issac’s Son Rowan who pulled on my heartstrings big time. For a little guy he was brave to go through all the changes he did.
The title of the book and the graphics of the book cover was spot on to the theme of the book! Kudos to the Graphic Designers on this aspect.
I have had Little Whispers by K.L. Slater on my ARC-TBR list for quite some time now but never got myself to start reading it. I don’t know why, but now I know I’ve made a mistake.
Janey hasn’t been living the exact perfect life. At the start of the book, we learn that her mother has told her a secret, with whom Janey is going to struggle until the very end. At this point, we don’t know what the secret was about, but trust me, when you find out, this entire wait will be worth it. The first few chapters are about the life she used to live. Her husband used to be working until late at night, and they grew more distant as the days passed by, until one day when Issac started a new job. He got a big raise, and they managed to move to a new town. A new neighbourhood, a new house, a new job, in other words, a new life, but is it going to be better than what they had before? As soon as she settles in, she meets some of the others ‘Buckingham mums’ (Tanya, Edie and Kyoto), with whom she is going to start being friends. Each of them is toxic (except one, not going to say who, because I don’t want to give you spoilers), but is she going to realise in time who are de good guys and who are the bad guys?
By the time I have reached 20% of the book, I got some major Big Little Lies vibes, and I quite liked that. Rich moms and dark secrets, what do you want more? I still wasn’t convinced about the action, and not quite hooked to the story, but despite all of this, I kept reading. Within a few hours, I reached 70%, and I was happier than ever! The book was easy to read, and the chapters were short. If it sometimes happened to be a longer chapter than expected, the next one was shorter than usual. The length of each one was well balanced, and I appreciate that in a book. Just like that, I reached the 88% mark, and the big secret got revealed. I made a shit-ton of scenarios in my head but never expected what happened next, but after all of this, I felt like the author started to babble. She just threw a bomb at us, but then she kept talking, somehow destroying the whole mood. I had to stop for a couple of times because I got worn down.
After some time, I reached the ending, and it was simply marvellous. I can’t think of a better one for this novel. I nicely put everything together, and, by the time you finish the book, you have your heart at ease. Exactly like it should be!
Overall, I was a great book whatsoever, and K.L. Slater just made my favourite list of authors. I am going to give it four stars out of five because I got bored while reading. A thriller book is not supposed to make you tired, it should keep you at the edge of your seat, and make you stay until 3 am just to finish it. Despite this, I highly recommend it for further reading!
Secrets and lies… Mommy drama….. AND edge of your seat suspense…. Seriously! This book has it all and proves life is never what it seems…. I found Little Whispers impossible to put down. There was so many twist and turns, and OMG moments…. This book is a true page-turner, and anything but predictable….
Suburban based psychological thriller at its very best!
Buckingham Crescent should have been the start of a new and fabulous life for Janey and her family, but secrets, deceit and lies will always put a stop to that.
So, who’s to blame? With whispers on the school playground, an overworked husband and a new set of friends with dynamics that Janey can’t quite fathom, there’s definitely something rumbling under the surface – but who is to be believed and who is lying? Where the blame lies is a huge question. I was treated to so many suspects and plenty of potential motives.
I loved the writing, it was so easy to read and keep reading. I really enjoyed how I as the reader got to experience the unfolding of the story along with Janey as she made her discoveries. It was definitely a case of, just when you thought you knew, think again – and then maybe, think again. Also, Susan’s chapters had an eerie feel to them – almost spine tingling.
The denouement was exciting and a proper race to the end. And I loved the final chapter. Just perfect!
I’ve read a lot of kL slater’s books and not sure I could rate any of them less than five stars. What a talent!
Wow! That’s what I have to say about Little Whispers, an intense psychological thriller from author, K.L. Slater.
Janey Markham and her family have just moved to Buckingham Crescent, a neighborhood much nicer than their previous one. Janey desperately wants to fit in with the sophisticated women in the neighborhood. She lets her guard down and reveals a secret to one of her new friends. A mistake she soon regrets. Now she has to decide between doing the right thing and having her explosive secret revealed.
Little Whispers is an excellent thriller. The characters are strong and completely believable. The plot is compelling and had me on the edge of my seat with the completely unexpected twists. I was guessing, incorrectly, up until the shocking end. This is a 5 out of 5 star read that I recommend to everyone who loves a good psychological thriller.
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and the Author K. L. Slater for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My second read from this Author and all I can say is WOW!
What an awesome page turner, I couldn’t read it fast enough to try and get what the secrets and mysteries of the characters were. This book sure had me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing until the very end.
An easy 5 star plus domestic psychological thriller at it’s best.
Janey and her family are coming up in the world. Her husband got a huge promotion, but they have to move … the new company is throwing in a much larger house in a posh neighborhood and where the schools are much better for their son. It doesn’t hurt that Janey was a teacher and may have an opportunity to teach again.
She’s not sure she will fit in with the glamorous other school moms, but she is willing to give it a shot. It doesn’t take long before she has new friends … Tanya, Edie and Ky.
In a weak moment, over a bottle .. or two .. of wine, Janey tells Tanya her deepest, darkest secret that no one knows other than her husband. Little does she realize that this one action will come back to haunt her in a huge way.
The best secrets are the most twisted.
Janey’s husband has grown distant and she worries he may be having an affair. Never would she have imagined anything worse.
Guaranteed to keep the reader riveted to each and every page, this thriller is well written with several twists and turns that lead to a shocking conclusion. Nothing is at is seems.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Janey and Isaac Markham, along with their son Rowan, move to the lower end of a very upscale neighborhood after he secures a new job with better wages. Janey had been caretaker for her mother who had recently passed away. On her deathbed, Janey’s mother told her a secret that had a profound affect on Janey. Rowan is enrolled in the top private school and Janey feels a chill from the ritzy, cliquish mums as she drops him off at school. Rowan is snubbed at school also but then all of a sudden he is welcomed by the other kids and naive, uncool Janey is welcomed into the clique. What could go wrong with this scenario??? Lots can and does. Isaac begins to act strangely and his new job does not seem to be all that great. This book was a slow starter but then all of a sudden it took off and I really enjoyed it. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this very twisty, page turner in exchange for an honest review.
