In the shadow of the nation’s capital, Kate Livingston’s respectable life as a government worker is disrupted by an encounter with the insufferable Trevor McDonough, the one man she’d hoped never to see again. Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to … agrees to Trevor’s risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor’s past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor’s closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.
As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

I learn more about history from Elizabeth Camden’s books than just about any other. Her love stories and plots are some of the absolute best in the CBA!
A wonderful listen on audiobook. Original and thought-provoking and romantic. Great historical background.
I truly enjoyed every inch of this story. The writing was captivating, the story was interesting and the ongoing competition between Kate and Trevor was charming. I had no idea who was behind the smear campaign until the very end. What a shock! I love being surprised by the big reveal.
I love that there was a focus on tuberculosis research as the study of infectious diseases is such a fascinating and precarious subject. It’s easy to forget just how recently effective treatment for tuberculosis was developed and how devastating and terrifying a disease it was throughout its LONG history with mankind. Seeing Trevor throw himself into his work with disregard for his own health in order to help others and answer his calling was inspiring. I loved Kate as well. She was smart, deeply caring with deep scars from the loses she’s experienced. She grew so much as a character and I loved seeing her wield her incredible mind in a “man’s world.” I can wholeheartedly recommend this book and, really, anything from this author.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
If there was ever two characters so wrong for each other that they were right together, it was Kate and Trevor. What a great push-pull relationship they had. I was riveted to the end. Full review is at my website: LoraineNunley.com
I received this book complimentary in a giveaway. I was not required to give a review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.
Kate Norton and Trevor McDonough were school rivals, always completing for the best marks. Kate loses her one chance at a full ride college scholarship to Trevor, and then they go their separate ways.
Eight years later, and now widowed Kate is enlisted by Dr. Trevor Kendall, who is none other than her schoolhood nemesis, to work alongside him in his quest to eradicate Tuberculosis. Kate is surprised to find that working with Trevor is rewarding and meaningful, but will secrets from his past or her fears keep them from finally finding common ground.
Trevor considers it his calling to work to find a cure for Tuberculosis, I admired his passion for what he does, as well as his selflessness and strong principals. He has his secrets, and a wry, matter-o-fact sense of humor. I think in the end he was probably my favorite character, because the more that I understood about him the more everything made sense.
Kate is intelligent and hardworking, with a compassionate heart for others, with a heavy load of responsibility on her shoulders. I liked her spirit and how she isn’t afraid to challenge Trevor to look at things differently, and to ask him uncomfortable questions.
I love how Ms. Camden brings tail end of the 19th Century to life, showing the brutal effects of Tuberculosis and the ways that it was treated in the past. Excellently researched, this fantastic book drew me in from the very start. Full of innovation, mystery, secrets, romance and fantastic heroes to cheer for. Highly enjoyable read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book blended history about tuberculosis with the compelling love story of a doctor and nurse who were old rivals. A well-written, informative, and engaging story.
My favorite Camden story . This story is a favorite in this house. What to say without giving the story away. Let’s say, you’ll hate Trevor, the hero, in the beginning but by the end he’s a man one would want their daughter to marry. Very honorable man. Once his childhood is revealed one understands his emotional disconnect from his patients and others. Kate, the heroine, is such a lively character with whom the reader can identify . Read the book. yes, I own a copy and it has been read by all in the house more than once.
Just plain love this author
Very easy to become engaged in. Also, I learned a lot! I am a Respiratory therapist, so the topic of tuberculosis is one I enjoyed learning more about. I really love historical fiction because I love to learn, and I always learn something new and interesting when I read this genre. I highly recommend this book! It also has a great love story!
Elizabeth Camden is one of my favorite Christian Romance authors.
Although I scratched my head at a few historical aspects, it overall was really good.
