It’s been a full year since the mystery that brought together antique shop owner and part-time amateur sleuth Sebastian Snow with homicide detective Calvin Winter. Patience, sanity, and their very lives have been put to the test, but love has persevered. Although Sebastian is now New York City’s best-known busybody, he’s finished with crime solving and wants nothing more than to plan a romantic … romantic budget wedding.
Then Snow’s Antique Emporium receives a decapitated human head in the mail and the holidays are gory once again. Sebastian patently disregards the mystery of a lifetime because he is done with death and danger—but the killer escalates. Before Sebastian knows it, his closest friends and family are dragged into a series of horrific murders with antiquated clues hinting to the infamous Victorian American Bones Wars.
The clock is ticking to recover a long-lost artifact linked to paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope and to capture a murderer. But it’s not Sebastian who may become the next target—it’s Calvin.

What can I say, I’m a huge fan of the Snow & Winter series, and The Mystery of the Bones is the perfect ending to Seb and Calvin’s steamy and sometimes perilous romance. This story has everything. Mystery. Intrigue. Love and danger with just the right pinch of angst. I was sure everything would come out right in the end, except for the fear that it wouldn’t that kept me breathlessly turning the pages. This is a MUST READ. Then grab The Mystery of Nevermore and start all over again.
It was with mixed feelings that I began reading The Mystery of the Bones. While desperate for more Seb and Calvin I also didn’t want to read the conclusion of the amazing series.
I have gone along on their adventures, fallen in love along with them, felt the hurt and pain they have experienced and witnessed the growth and strength of them as individuals and as a couple. This book is the perfect send off for these wonderfully written men.
Without giving away any spoilers I will just say the mystery was intriguing, riveting and suspenseful.
The secondary characters add so much depth and dimension to the series. Neil is redeemed in the best possible way and I can’t wait for his story. Hopefully we will catch a visit or two from Seb and Cal!
Thank you C.S. Poe for creating a world the reader can get lost in. I know I will be revisiting these stories many times through book and audio!
The goal for any series where there are both book arcs and a connecting series arc is to up the stakes with each successive book. Good gods of paleontology, has C.S. Poe ever upped the stakes in the final installment of Snow & Winter. I’ve adored Sebastian from the first – the encyclopedia-minded antiques dealer with vision issues who uses sarcasm as both weapon and shield. But in this book, his growing desperation renders him both more heroic and more vulnerable than before, and I can’t help but love him more.
(Of course we love Calvin, too, but this story is mainly Sebastian’s journey.)
Seb has grown. He recognizes other people’s growth. He accepts help when he needs it. His confidence in his relationship and his love for Calvin are unshakable – and we worry at the edge of our seats all throughout this mystery.
Also, once again the author steers us into the late 19th century to visit with another of the era’s controversial and not always ethical personalities. It’s quite the ride – go read. You won’t be sorry.
This is for the audio and e-book:
This is the final book in the series say it isn’t so!) , and it’s a beffiting end. Seb has promised not to get involved with anymore murders, until he has no choice in the matter – a severed head will do that! Seb has a real vested interest in solving the mystery …. Cal.
Neil, Seb’s ex, redeems himself and there may be a hint of him getting his own story (ok, so I’m hoping!). CS Poe really knows how to write a good mystery – I couldn’t figure out the culprit, not until it was obvious. Love this book and the series as a whole.
Wyatt Baker really did a great job with the narration – his snarky Seb is a pleasure and the stoic Cal is spot on. As the narrator to finish out the series, he ihas been a great choice!
I loved this book. it was the perfect ending to the series. This series was fantastic with all the history, mystery and love what could be more perfect.
This was a great story to end a wonderful series. I can’t recommend C S Poe’s series highly enough. In fact I adore all her books. She does her homework and makes her characters interesting and believable.
Become a fan! You won’t go wrong.
Snow & Winter 4, the Mystery of the Bones is an incredible ending to a thrilling series. The murders are creepy! The emotions are a whirl wind! This will keep you turning the page in desperation because OH MY GOD C.S. POE WOULDN’T–WOULD SHE?! I DON’T KNOW SHE WENT THERE LAST TIME–
Calvin and Seb have loved, struggled, snarked, and split themselves open for each other. They have grown towards each other–and while it might have been hard to be so open, so exposed to another human being, they trusted each other and showed the darkest parts of themselves. They are soulmates through and through. Those around them can clearly see the deep, amazing love they share and it inspires them to do better by themselves in various ways.
This thrilling conclusion is an amazing example of what love can do not only to the people IN love, but those around them! AND the mystery!!!! This book has my FAVORITE bad guy so far!
I urge you to read this book, this series (starting with the Mystery of Nevermore) if you’ve ever felt like you don’t fit in, afraid to be yourself, too weird to let anyone see the real you. I promise you will find a friend in Sebastian and Calvin. You will cry with them (you will WISH you had Sebastian’s snarky wit. my GOD my KINGDOM FOR HIS SNARK), you will laugh with them, and most of all you’ll remember that there are plenty of people out there that feel the same way you do.
Thank you C.S. Poe, for telling the world that even us weird ones can find acceptance and love.
