Maybe your grandchildren are living with you. Maybe they’re thousands of miles away. Their parents may be spiritually rebellious or simply neglectful of the family’s spiritual life, failing to make prayer and church attendance a regular part of their routine. But even if your grandchildren’s parents have established a strong Christian home, busy schedules, jobs, parenting, and all the … distractions of today’s world conspire to distract or even destroy the family. How can you, as a grandparent, help?
God gives grandparents a sacred trust—an opportunity to imprint another generation with the message of his faithfulness. You can stand in the gap by being a godly example for your grandchildren and by praying for them. Even grandparents who already pray regularly for their grandchildren will discover creative suggestions for making the practice even more meaningful. From cell phones to photo prayer journals, you’ll find tools that work for you—and for your grandchildren.
Author Lillian Ann Penner provides specific examples of prayers to help you get started, such as alphabet prayers, prayers based on special scriptures, and prayers for certain holidays. You may even widen the circle, praying for other children in your life, for children who have parents in the military, and for the adults who influence your grandchildren. Regardless of how far away your grandchildren are, praying for them can bridge the distance between you and leave them with an inheritance more precious than gold.

Author Lillian Penner has revised and expanded her book, Grandparenting With a Purpose. Inside you’ll find many tools to help you pray for your grandchildren.
There are three sections within this book, each having different material. There is also a really good appendix with scripture prayers for you to insert the name of your grandchild.
Broken down into chapters, each one has a theme. It contains scripture, a biblical story, a story from the author’s experience, a prayer, and a study guide. It’s obvious that much thought and prayer went into this book. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.
My Thoughts on Grandparenting with a Purpose:
While I am not a grandparent I was still intrigued by this book. When I picked it up I immediately noticed that it has a gorgeous cover. Next, I noticed that it’s a revised and expanded issue. This makes me know that the author really cares about this subject still and wanted to make sure it was the best it could be.
Within this book there are three sections: Grandparents Standing in the Gap with Prayer, Standing in the Gap with Intercessory Prayer, and Standing in the Gap for Grandchildren. On first glance, they all sound quite alike but they do have different content.
I know in my own life that my grandma was quite the woman and she impacted me in many ways. Her faith was not one of them however as she did not exhibit strong faith and I cannot remember my grandparents going to church. My parents are the opposite of this for my children and it really is showing me how we need to be the best we can be so to speak for our children and someday grandchildren.
This is a great book and I highly recommend that all grandparents receive a copy.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Grandparenting with a Purpose, Effective Ways to Pray for Your Grandchildren by author Lillian Penner is a must read for all grandparents. Actually it is a great book for parents and others that love and pray for children. Aunts and uncles, Sunday school teachers, and friends will benefit from this book on praying for children.
The author provides practical tips and tools for praying for children as well as scripture. Her view is that praying for them and their parents is the best thing we can do for them. As a mother of two, Gram of four, and aunt to many, I readily agreed. I have been praying for mine since before they were born.
This book had me nodding my head in agreement and at times stopping my reading to pray. It is easy to read and understand, and it will move you. Scripture is freely used with examples of good parents and prayers. The questions at the end of the chapters are for personal study.
There three sections in this book: Grandparents Standing in the Gap with Prayer, Standing in the Gap with Intercessory Prayer, and Standing in the Gap for Grandchildren. Each section has relevant lessons. The end of the book is filled with a plethora of valuable information, worksheets, and reference material. Do not miss it.
A small group of grandparents or soon-to-be ones would richly benefit from this inspiring book. I will be purchasing it for shower gifts for grandparents. This fills a void that in today’s world cannot afford to remain empty. We must pray for our children and theirs.
I highly recommend this book. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. Every church library should have one in it. Anyone that loves a child should read it. If you do not know how to pray for someone, this is a great tool. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.
Since our world is in moral and spiritual decline, we are in a battle for the minds and hearts of our dear grandchildren. The enemy is trying to steal their lives and the plans that God has for them. (p. xvii)
Grandparents are very important in a child’s life and children certainly benefit if their grandparents are Godly people. In this revised and expanded editon of Grandparenting with a Purpose. author Lillian Penner offers many suggestions for Christian believers who are devoted to praying for their grandchildren. There are many examples of different prayers for grandchildren in various stages of life and she also shares prayers for grandparents themselves. With an abundance of Bible scripture and a Study Guide with questions at the end of each chapter, I can certainly recommend this book for both personal use or in a group study.
I received a copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit Tours. I was under no obligation to write a positive review and these are my opinions.
I am so excited to read this book knowing that in June my husband and I will be first time grandparents. We are over the moon and are thankful that He answered our prayers. Grandparents are very special and in this book the author has provided biblical principles to help us pray for our grandchildren. I love how the author says we are living in the now generation. It is time to make a difference and instill Godly values over our children and grandchildren.
I remember my grandmother taking me to church when I was little. I would spend a few weeks with her in the summer. She would dress me up in pretty dresses and off we would go to church. My grandmother was a school teacher, Sunday school teacher and worked in the office at church. During my time with her I really saw how dedicated she was to God. As I reflect back on my grandmother , I realize how much she impacted my life. I’m thankful for her prayers and her example of a Godly woman.
I like the idea of leaving a journal for our children and grandchildren. In it I want to include Bible scriptures, prayers , and have a section for each child. As they pass the journal on, their heritage will show Christian values , parents and grandparents that were warriors for them. Recently in the news, we are hearing more and more children are being raised by grandparents. It is a big responsibility and it gives them an opportunity to show the grandchildren that they are loved by them and God.
At the end of each chapter are questions to use as a personal study. There are also prayers and examples from the Bible that are good role models that exercised how grand-parenting is. I enjoyed reading the book and getting information that will help as we pray for our grandchildren.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
