Brook Garrett had learned to live by her wits. When she was very young, she lost her father to a car crash. When her mother remarried, her nightmare really began. A few years later, her mother died the same way. She was next.Ronan Foster was an officer out on … years later, her mother died the same way. She was next.
Ronan Foster was an officer out on medical leave. He was a lion and wasn’t hurt in the least, but the guy responsible for shooting him would go free if he didn’t take the sabbatical. The guy was responsible for much more than shooting him, and justice needed to be served.
Trust was hard for Brook. Her stepparents had seen to that. Now the big lion was telling her that they were mates and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. She had been doing just fine without a man in her life….

OMG, I have laughed and cried, been shocked and mortified, overwhelmed, and relieved reading this book. Talk about your dysfunctional families. I mean really. And to have all that going on and to still grow up to have a giving heart. Not only was this a terrific read but it was a bit inspirational which left me all the feels. I loved it.
Great first book and I bought on sale which is even better.
Great start to a new series
Ronan Foster, lion shifter, oldest of six brothers, and police officer. Currently on medical leave, after being shot. Has found his mate in a spunky human, who runs a construction company and has a habit of hiring ex-com shifters.
Brook Garrett, lived in a loving home until she was 5, then her father died in an accident and her mother remarried. Allen Quarter was abusive to them both. Then her mom died and Allen married Cindy and brought her two kids Junior and Bethy, into her home. The abuse went on.
Brook had a plan and she was finally able to rid herself of the Quarters. She doesn’t trust easily. She has made a good life for herself. Now the Quarters are up for parole and the officer who tracked her down to let her know is her mate.
Ronan understands Brook. His father abused his mother as well as he and his brothers until they were big enough to take him on.
Ronan’s father is back and out to get his mom. Brook’s step brother, is out to get her and his parents free. Her step sister needs her help.
Fast paced, a little steamy. Loved Brook and Ronan’s story. Looking forward to the next book.
Ronan and Brook start out a new series from one of my favorite authors. Brook has had a trying life, her struggles have made her smart and strong. Ronan was hurt in the line of duty, sitting out of work when he could shift and heal is harder then he thought. However, the bad guy needs to be put away so he must do what he has too. Meeting Brook is an eye opening experience, she is tough, voices her opinion, hates stupid, doesn’t trust easily and not what he expected in a mate. While the experiences of both main characters are tragic, the story is very entertaining. These two will make you smile and the family will make you grin. Ms. Barton has amazing characters, entertaining storylines and always leaves you wanting more. I look forward to the next mate and can’t wait to see what brother is next.
I’m always excited to see when Kathi comes out with a new series. This one is quite exciting because while she’s done different breeds of cat shifters in her stories, and if I’m not mistaken has written one lion story, this is the first series where all the brothers are all lions!
Brook Garrett at a young age learned life is not all sunshine and rainbows. She lost her father in a car crash at a young age. Then when Allen came into hers and her mother’s lives she discovered that some people can be the thing nightmares are made of. Then she suddenly lost her mother and is left to the abuse of her stepfather and his new wife. However, before deals could be made and Brook’s life taken, she runs and is able to finally escape the nightmare she was living.
10 years later she’s still having to protect herself from her stepbrother, Junior, but beyond that, Brook has made something of her life and surrounds herself with men she can trust to help her and protect her. However, the big lion that protects her is telling her they are mates and for some reason she wants to trust him, which is a rare occurrence for Brook.
For Ronan and Brook there’s more obstacles headed their way. First they must deal with her stepparents parole hearing, the stepbrother who’s out for revenge, the guy responsible for shooting Ronan, oh and the king of lions coming to inform Ronan he’s the next to take over for lions all over. Easy peasy right??
If I had any complaints, and this is just me nitpicking, I wish we could’ve found out a bit more about the issue Ronan had with the guy that shot him. There isn’t much there except to explain that is why he is on medical leave. I also kind of wish we couldn’t learned what happened to the chief of police after he tried to shoot Brook and where Harlan (a friend of Brook’s and higher ranking than the chief) disappeared to. For someone that was a good friend to Brook he just kind of faded out of the story altogether.
