And this is no exception. The plot was unique and the book well paced. I loved the characters and their varying personalities! I loved Augusta’s quick wit and devilish behavior.

Lady Augusta is furious with her father for arranging a betrothal with a man she has never even met. Upon their first meeting she is icy cold and rude to him. Uncertain what he wants to do, he waits to sign their betrothal papers, finding out immediately that his brother has died and he has inherited the title. When he returns, now as Lord Leicestershire, he is amazed at how the ton now treats him with regard and the ladies fall all over him vying for his attention. He decides that he must get out of this betrothal. But he has a lot to learn about the fickleness of society and Augusta patiently stands by him, and tries to help him navigate around some self seeking, nasty individuals. I wasn’t so convinced when they do a 180 in their feelings for one another and are suddenly in love. She never even calls him by name, only by his new title. I wasn’t feeling it.

Stephen was to meet the woman he was to marry at a ball he was uncomfortable out in society, the only time anyone talked to him was to ask about his brother the Marquess of Leicestershire, especially all the young ladies with hopes of becoming his Countess. So Stephen had arranged his marriage with the lady’s father because who else would have him. Lady Augusta was shocked when she found her hand was being given to a man she never met, so when she went to meet him she planned on not liking him and was rude also. When they danced not one word was exchanged between them, Stephen still went home and signed the marriage contracts. Planning on sending the contracts the next morning when his butler rushed in with a letter telling Stephen his brother had died in a duel, Stephen was now the Marquess. When he starts getting all the attention that used to be his brothers his head is turned, leaving him open to some less than honest people. Lady Augusta thought she’d be the one to select her husband, unfortunately her father had other ideas. Telling her that she is to marry Lord Pendleton, she meets him for the first time at a ball. Not happy with this, she is cold and unwelcoming. Unsure of this arrangement, Lord Pendleton agrees to the match and signs the papers, but before they can be delivered he is informed of his brothers death and is now the Marquess of Leicestershire. With this new found title, he’s welcomed into the Ton more readily and even starts to change. Lady Augusta is not at all happy with this new Lord Leicestershire. As the story progresses, they confront each other and they find that even though they may end the betrothal, they can still help each other when the Ton shows their true colors. Lord Leicestershire soon realizes he’s find a gem in Lady Augusta. Their courtship is well written and Rose has once again written her characters so that you can relate to them. Absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend.

The “sweetheart” of the story is quite the feisty one. She definitely has a strong personality which, of course, goes against the Regency norm for a single young woman. I was hooked – wondering what troubles she might get into with her rebelliousness! And she definitely got into trouble. The mystery in this historical romance kept me turning pages until the end, as did the happy romance. Rose Pearson, as always, writes wonderful and interesting stories!

I am so pleased to be in a position to state unequivocally “This is a good read” in my humble unbiased opinion, that is. My question for you.. ‘Will you be able to solve the mystery before the author gives you the answer?’. Happy Reading ! !

Illustrating incredible, well rounded scenario’s that punch dead center, ratcheting up the adrenaline with such exuberance and precision, catapulting this little fella to staggering heights. The characters are authentic and realistic with depth and qualities that transform into outstanding personalities. The scenes are so abundantly detailed to give you a full understanding and realism that balance out fluidly. Remarkable job Rose, thanks for sharing this little fella with us.
I rarely give any book a five star rating because nothing is perfect, but this book was close. I gave it a four and a half star rating only because it ended too soon. I am looking for a sequel or at least an extended epilogue.
It was a fun read with a little romance, detective work, intrigue and bad first impressions leading to a better second impression. Although the book was short you still get a feel for all the characters and you see the progression of the relationship develop between the two main characters. It’s good to know that one can still have the opportunity to create a renewed “first or second impression”.
If you are looking for a quick read with interesting characters and a good story, I highly recommend this book.

Lady Augusta enjoyed her first season but is dismayed when her parents tell her that she is soon to be betrothed to Lord Pendleton in what is a very business-like arrangement. However, when his elder brother dies and he becomes the Marquis of Leicestershire, Augusta finds herself thrust aside, their betrothal now no longer as certain as she had believed. Then it becomes apparent that someone is out to ruin Stephen’s reputation, Augusta has to decide what her feelings are & who she should believe.
This is the start of a new series & I found it to be a well written novel that flowed well. There were misunderstandings & conflicting emotions, which added to my enjoyment. Whilst I could sympathise with Augusta I did feel she was unjustly rude to Stephen at their first meeting but the more I read the more I liked her. Stephen came across as very likeable to begin with then had his head turned by all the attention he garnered only to become true to himself at the end. An interesting read that I read in two sittings
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A wonderful story with believable characters and more than a few plot twists. The layered plot keeps you firmly engaged from beginning to end, and the multidimensional characters capture your heart. Thought provoking and entertaining.
Historical romance is my favorite genre to read. This story has great characters, (n there are many of them) who play their parts very well, both good and “evil”. Follow along as the mystery subtle clues are revealed to the small group of those involved and find out if Lady Augusta’s marriage to Lord Pendleton is going to happen or if the many diversions will continue.
I love Regency reads and this one is fantastically written. The Author has done a Brilliant job at bringing this read to fruition, the scenes are written so well that I can picture myself living vicariously through the characters. This is definitely a must read.
