More Than a Cowboy is the third in Sarah Mayberry’s Carmody family series, and it is an incredible read. This is about Sierra Carmody, a helicopter pilot, and Garret Tate. Sierra’s never given Garret a second thought, except that their families share a terrible, tragic history, and they’ve made it a point not to cross paths. But when her mentor Jack asks her to step in for him to serve as Garret’s pilot while he recovers from an injury, she can’t refuse. And she and Garret discover they share an incredibly powerful sense of connection, emotionally and otherwise.
Ms Mayberry’s writing is as excellent as ever. Sierra and Garret are gripping, well-written people, and it is pure pleasure to see them wrestle with and prevail over the circumstances they face. Sierra’s a real straight shooter, and Ms Mayberry’s written her in such a way that I would not only love to be her friend, I’ve got a bit of a girl crush on her too!
Garret is real hero material too, a truly upstanding guy who does his absolute best while facing some truly staggering concerns. The Carmodys also play a role, with Sierra’s siblings and their partners making welcome appearances throughout.
More Than a Cowboy is going straight to my re-read shelf, and I’m eagerly awaiting the last Carmody story!
Just when I think I couldn’t love the Marietta, Montana world any more than I already do – or that it could get even better – along comes More Than A Cowboy, the third title in The Carmody Family series. If you’ve followed the many series in the Marietta, Montana universe then you’re aware of the harsh feelings and the tragedy that affected the Tate and the Carmody families. Sierra Carmody and Garret Tate should be an unlikely couple given their families’ history – but they work, oh, they more than work well together, they soar to new heights. And just as easily could crash when new information about Garret’s parents come to light.
More Than A Cowboy drew me in from the beginning and never let go. When Garret’s father suffered a stroke, and his personal pilot injured his back those strange coincidences lead to this couple meeting, working together, and fighting a strong attraction right up until they couldn’t fight anymore. There are layers to this story, unexpected surprises, most definitely danger, and an intriguing puzzle to work through as Garret takes over his father’s place, temporarily, in his business, and makes some shocking discoveries – ones that go beyond just his father.
I’ve enjoyed Sierra in the earlier stories, but here her personality shines as she fights against a strong attraction to a man she shouldn’t want, for several reasons, but loving him isn’t a choice, it just is. Part of my enjoyment of More Than A Cowboy was that this couple talks to each other. Yeah, imagine that. Oh, sure, Garret makes one dumb move but aside from that they communicate and that is not only refreshing but sexy as well. I’d much rather know where someone stands than constantly be guessing and getting it wrong – so talking through what is going on within those many layers added an extra special touch for me.
I loved this story. And although I’m always re-reading series within the Marietta, Montana world – this one is a definite re-read, and often. It’s just that good. If you love a likable, believable couple facing down family history, solving a puzzle, and seeing that the wrongs are made right – then you’ll want to pick up More Than A Cowboy as soon as possible.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Although the title says Carmody Brothers, this time is actually their sister’s story. This is Sierra’s story finally.
Sierra Carmody has always wanted to fly. She managed to learn to fly helicopters and really wants to fly them professionally. She has been flying with Gideon Tate’s personal pilot, Jack, to get more hours under her belt but her brothers’ dislike this. Gideon Tate was the man who was driving and killed their parents in a car accident years ago. Her brothers never forget this.
Sierra happens to be flying with Jack when Gideon has a heart attack and pretty much saves his life. Garret Tate, Gideon’s son, is called back home to take over the family business while his father recovers. Garret has stayed away from the family company due to differences with how his father handled things.
But when his mom calls him, he comes to help out. And that means flying between Marietta and the corporate office. Garret is fine with this when it is Jack doing the flying. But Jack has to take time off due to an injury, Sierra takes over the job as the pilot flying Garret.
But the sparks really fly between these two and although they try to fight the attraction, they do eventually give in. Garret is also dealing with digging out the inaccuracies he is finding in the books of his father’s company. And dealing with the feeling that there is something really off in the company. He is also afraid of getting involved with Sierra since he is technically her boss. But never ignore the sparks and attraction since they are way more powerful.
As Sierra and Garret explore their passion and feelings, Sierra helps to ground Garret as he continues to find more and more about how his father really ran the family business.
Of the books in this series, I think this one is my favorite. I can’t exactly explain why but it is. I think because of the lead characters have such strong morals and beliefs.
I did receive a copy of this novel in advance from the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
First and foremost, I’m a big fan of Sarah Mayberry’s The Carmody Brothers series. The Cowboy Meets His Match(book #1) and The Rebel and the Cowboy(book #2) are two of the finest Marietta stories that I have read. More Than a Cowboy(book #3) exceeds their benchmark! It is the story of Sarah Carmody and Garret Tate, members of two families that will always be linked by tragedy. Sierra Carmody… the only Carmody daughter… the sibling that works tirelessly to hold her four sibling family together… a primary worker of their family farm… a remarkable helicopter pilot… inner strength Sierra… compassionate Sierra… loyal Sierra… beautiful Sierra.
The story begins with a series of events that set the stage for our story. First, millionaire Gideon Tate, the man who owns the helicopter, suffers a severe stroke. His son, Garret is asked to take over the family business by his mother. Garret, who differs greatly from his father, leaves his start up business in Seattle and returns home, per his mother’s wishes. Disorder ensues when Jack, the Carmody’s pilot, and the man who taught Sierra to fly, is sidelined with a bad back. Sierra is asked to fill in for Jack, which will negate her ranch contribution, but because of her sense of loyalty to Jack, she must accept. Sierra and Garret knew each other as kids and teenagers, but they are now grown… with grown up attractions.
Events turn south, and continue that way from Garret’s first day in his ne job. He fights rebellious senior management, stolen internal paperwork, unaccountable funds, and possible illegal business practices. Then he discovers that his mother, who he has tried mightily to protect, may not be as lily white as he thought. This revelation is another blow to his heart. A heart already long damaged by his father’s self-serving actions. He has been thrown in the “deep end”, barely able to swim, and only one available flotation device: Sierra. Their strained old-time friendship moves rapidly to scorching hot passion. Will Garret succeed in his new job? Will Tate Transportation survive? Will Gideon Tate survive his health issues? Will Garret protect Sierra from the Tate Transportation debacle? Will they, as a couple, survive? Will their love survive?
This book, and this series, are equal to the lofty pedestal built by C. J. Carmichael’s Carrigan’s of Circle C, Eve Gaddy’s The Gallaghers of Montana, and Debra Salonen’s Big Sky Mavericks! More Than a Cowboy is romance literature, and Marietta, at its best! Easily 5 stars!
I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is the 3rd book in the Carmody Brothers series. This book was s about the sister, Sierra. We learn that Sierra is a pilot, preferring to fly helicopters. She has the opportunity to work with an established pilot in her hometown of Marietta Montana. Jack, the pilot has a standing job to fly Gideon Tate from his home each day to his office in Helena. Sierra is also on the flight and Gideon slumps over and they realize there’s a problem. They get him to the hospital where it’s determined he’s suffered a massive stroke. Jack contacts his wife who calls their son, Garret.
Garret comes in from Seattle as soon as he can. His mom asks him to take over the business in Helena, rather than letting the general manager Ron step up. Jack, the pilot throws out his back and asks Sierra to take over the 6 week contract flying Garret back and forth from Marietta to Helena each day. Sierra hesitates to accept because her brothers have negative feelings for the Tate’s since Gideon caused their parents deaths in a car accident 13 years earlier. She accepts and explains the job to her brothers and they are accepting since it is about furthering her career.
When Garret gets to the office the first day, he realizes Ron purposely avoided him. So the next day Garret meets with various department heads including Ron. He realizes Ron is keeping some financial information hidden. When he’s unable to get anywhere with him, Ron gets angry, threatens him and leaves. Garret later realizes Ron’s assistant gave him his laptop and files containing incriminating evidence. Garret notifies Sierra that they will need to stay overnight at his parents home in Helena. He finds her very easy to talk to and starts sharing his company problems with her. Both realize they are interested in the other but fight it. Sierra knows she’s working for him and he knows she’s his employee and both feel it’s inappropriate to act on their feelings.
After another round of problems, Garret hires a specialized accountant to help him figure out what his dad and Ron might’ve done. The accountant turns out to be Sierra’s brother Jed’s ex, Mae. She warns Garret the DA might be investigating his dads company for corporate bribery. Garret and Sierra end up staying over again. Ron shows up drunk and is shouting and threatening. Sierra saves the day by squirting him with a hose. The couple give into their feelings and have sex. The next morning both have regrets individually and decide not to do it again.
Garret has mounting problems with his dad and Ron’s unknown actions. He has to stay over again. Both he and Sierra decide to give into their feelings. He continues to confide in her and they realize they have feelings for each other besides just wanting sex.
There is a lot of angst between the couple and suspense over what is going to happen to Garret’s parents. Now that we’ve seen Mae in this book, the wonder is if she and Jed will get back together, even if she’s engaged to someone else? I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read all 3 In the series, but it’s been a while since I read the first two. I highly recommend this book and look forward hopefully to reading Jed’s story.
This is the third book in this series but I had no problems with it even though I haven’t read the previous books yet it is a total stand alone other than been about Sierra’s brothers
Sierra Carmody is a strong woman not only did she survive the death of her parents in a car crash but she has gone on to be a helicopter pilot and now she has a job flying for Tate Transport after her mentor hurts his back The only problem is that brings back bad memories because it was the father of Garret Tate who killed her parents when he drove into them head on. Garret has no intention of ever been like his father and the moment he could he left Marrietta and built his own business but his father’s stroke has brought him back and straight to the girl he grew up with. The attraction between them is instant and soon they start to rely on one another her when her brother fails to return from a day of work on the ranch and he when his fathers company is involved in controversy. Can they get past their families pasts and have a future together you will have to read to see
More Than a Cowboy is the third Carmody Family book by Sarah Mayberry. Instead of one of the brothers this time it is Sierra Carmody a helicopter pilot. Usually I don’t go for boss and employee stories. Too much of a must have her in spite of the uneven power situation. Happily I can say this is nothing like that. Garrett Tate is a man with ethics, strong beliefs resiliency and a load of guilt as well as using the f-word when it is not necessary..
Family is a huge element of this book as much as the romance b brewing between Garrett and Sierra. It doesn’t overshadow the romance but does play as big a part in their staying away from each other as the fact that he is technically her boss does. However, Sierra is a strong woman capable of thinking for herself and deciding on a plan of action for herself.
The story is well constructed so that the past is explained fully without being redundant. The brothers from the first two books have enough of the background given so that you wan to read their stories but fully understand all that is happening in this one. So this is a stand-alone that reads well without the first two books having been read. It does seem as if the groundwork is being laid for the last brother’s story in the future. This series has almost a year between each book. I am hoping that we don’t have to wait that long to see what happens with Jed.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been waiting for Sierra Carmody’s story since I discovered the Carmody’s Brother’s series way back when and knew somehow that hers would be a very strong story indeed. Our author did not fail me in any way. Sierra was raised by her brothers after she lost her parents in a horrible accident. That accident happened to include Garret Tate’s father. Since then the two families have not mixed. Well except for Sarah taking helicopter flying lessons from Jack, who is the pilot for the Tate family. When Jack gets sick Sarah takes over flying for Garret Tate and gets to know the family closer than ever. All is not what both sides thought and life can change in a blink of a eye. This book can be read as a stand alone but I really recommend the first two books in this series as well.
4.5 Stars!
I thoroughly enjoyed More Than a Cowboy by Sarah Mayberry. It is a steamy romance with a ton of excitement, emotion and energy. This is the third book from the author’s Carmody Family series and it can be read as a standalone.
Sierra Carmody lives and works on the family ranch in cowboy country. In her free time she has become a helicopter pilot, and plans on piloting full-time in the near future. When her friend and mentor has severe back problems, she steps in to take over his flight schedule. She is now transporting Garret Tate, the recently named CEO of Tate Transport, to and from the company’s headquarters in Helena from his parent’s home in Marietta. Sierra and Garret both grew up in Marietta, and at one time Garret was the best friend of Sierra’s oldest brother. Although Garret was successfully carving out his own professional niche in Seattle, his father’s stroke caused him to immediately step into the CEO position. Garret has no desire to work for his father’s company, however, he wants to keep the company’s employees employed and his mother as stress-free as possible.
Sierra and Garret share an attraction which evolves into much more. They are each other’s soulmates and the love that they develop is as strong as an ox. Sierra quickly becomes Garret’s calm, when Tate Transport’s financial practices come under fire. When Sierra’s brother does not return from a fence repair on the western ridge, Garret becomes Sierra’s rock.
This is a well-conceived romance with an engaging plot and nicely-defined characters. I found Sierra and Garret to be intelligent and real, and I admired how Garret handled his new normal. Sierra and Garret are a hot couple and their sexy encounters left me breathless. Overall, this is a captivating novel that twists and turns in all the right places.

More Than a Cowboy by Sarah Mayberry
He’s all wrong but he makes her feel like she’s flying…
When Sierra Carmody lands a temporary job as a private helicopter pilot for Garret Tate, it’s a dream come true. The last thing she expects or wants is to fight a powerful attraction to her new boss when their families share a painful history. But Garret draws her like no other, and she can’t stop thinking about him.
His world is sinking but she feels like solid ground…
Garret Tate is determined to be nothing like his father, which means keeping his hands strictly to himself around the hired help. But Sierra tempts him far more than just physically. She’s smart, funny, capable and honest and everything he never knew he wanted. It’s not long before they give in to their off-the-charts chemistry. Torn between family loyalty and love, can there be a safe landing?
This is Sierra Carmody and Garret Tate’s story.
Sierra Carmody grinned as she watched a broad-winged hawk soar on a thermal twenty feet below the cockpit of the Bell 407.
All around her was the crisp, clear blue of a Montana summer sky, and below was a vast blanket of green and brown occasionally cut through with the snaking line of a road or railway or river.
Even the mighty hulk of Copper Mountain was reduced to a plaything from up here, its rocky peak wreathed in fluffy white clouds.
The rain started when Garret Tate was just ten minutes out of Billings, slashing at the windscreen and overwhelming the wipers. He kept his foot on the gas anyway, conscious of the clock running down. He’d been in Rome on a work trip when his mother’s panicked, tearful call lit up his phone yesterday, and he’d been wrangling with travel companies and officialdom ever since.
He wasn’t about to slow down now, not when the doctors had indicated his father’s chances of surviving the
next forty-eight hours were no better than fifty-fifty. His relationship with his father hadn’t been strong for a long time, but that didn’t mean Garret didn’t love him.

This is book three of The Carmody Brothers, I was given an advance copy in exchange for my review. Spicy hot warning, hot , hot , hot, the kind of chemistry that makes the strongest people break their own rules.
How much should Garret give up to prove his family loyalty and save his fathers business? Does he need to give up his own pride or his new found love?
A family business in trouble, a helicopter pilot and her boss in a lustful entanglement, and lines that are dared to be crossed add up to a terrific plot and story. Great Read!
