“James Martin’s riveting new meditation on Jesus is one of the best books I’ve read in years—on any subject.” — Mary Karr, author of LitJames Martin, SJ, gifted storyteller, editor at large of America magazine, popular media commentator, and New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, brings the Gospels to life in Jesus: A Pilgrimage, and invites believers and … life in Jesus: A Pilgrimage, and invites believers and seekers alike to experience Jesus through Scripture, prayer and travel.
Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual insights about the Christ of faith, Father Martin recreates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher you into Jesus’s life and times and show readers how Jesus speaks to us today. Martin also brings together the most up-to-date Scripture scholarship, wise spiritual reflections, and lighthearted stories about traveling through the Holy Land with a fellow (and funny) Jesuit, visiting important sites in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
The person at the heart of the Gospels can seem impossibly distant. Stories about his astonishing life and ministry—clever parables that upended everyone’s expectations, incredible healings that convinced even skeptics, nature miracles that dazzled the dumbstruck disciples—can seem far removed from our own daily lives, hard to understand, and at times irrelevant. But in Jesus you will come to know him as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother.

If you ever wanted to visit the Holy Land of Israel and walk where Jesus walked, but can’t get there…here is a “virtual tour” par excellence. Leisurely, you almost feel as if you are strolling along with Fr. James Martin and his priest friend. Enjoyable, educational, brings the whole geographic area into perspective.
James Martin, S.J. is one of my favorite spiritual writers. I’ve greatly enjoyed every one of his books that I’ve read, but this is by far my favorite. Jesus: A Pilgrimage is part spiritual inspiration, part travelogue. Martin chronicles his pilgrimage to the Holy Land with his usual wit and profound spiritual insight. There were laugh-out-loud moments alongside spiritual insights so deep they made me want to cry. His depictions are so realistic I felt as though I was actually there.
Don’t let the length of this book deter you. It is so well-written that the pages fly by.
I love, love, love this book and highly recommend it!
I’ll be honest – I’m still reading this book. But I got it in ebook form AND in print so I could gift it to a friend, so I keep going back to this as a stable, wonderful read.
Father Martin’s a favorite author of mine, and he doesn’t disappoint in this book, documenting his pilgrimage through the life of Jesus, walking the same path and discovering the little things along the way that make it an interesting read.
Even if you’re not a big religious reader, this is a great read if you enjoy history and archaeology–he documents plenty of interesting theories and brings the history to life, such as noting the simple life of a carpenter in that era. He postulates that Jesus not only worked in the small town where he lived, learning his trade, but also migrated with his father to a larger, more Roman-owned town for work.
All in all, an interesting read and if you’re looking to start off 2020 with a touch of historical reading, please consider picking this one up!
An inspirational book that acts sort of a travel guide to the Holy Land while explaining the importance and the interpretation needed for each site. Taught me so much.
I’m so glad I read this book since I’m going to Israel next year!
Outstanding! One of the best Christian books I’ve ever read.
Very interesting
I felt as though I was actually there in Israel, and could almost feel the grit between my toes. The chapter on the hidden life of Jesus I found particularly helpful and interesting.
This book has been a gift from heaven for me. The author walked me through the historical context of the gospels and introduced me to a new way of introjecting the paraboles. This book has moved my prayer life in a positive manner. I cannot find the words to fluently and honestly express all the benefits received by reading this book. Of course I recommend it.
I thought this book was very good. It brought Jesus alive and real to me. I could also picture the places where he preached better.
Inspirational and Informative !!!!
I liked the authors writing style forcing me to think in different terms about Jesus as it relates to the holy land in a personal relationship with our Lord
