The War Hero’s Welcome is a warm and highly entertaining cozy mystery set in small town America. With well-developed characters and a nice dose of red herrings to deepen the mystery, this is a well-written, quick read that will be loved by Dianne Harman’s fans as well as new devotees.
Major Cash Conner and his devoted Belgian Laekenois service dog, Wicked, arrive home unexpectedly after both sustained injuries in Iraq. Cash’s mother, Kelly, his stepfather, Sheriff Mike Reynolds, and the community of Cedar Bay rise up to welcome both soldiers home with gratitude and love. It’s not long before their story comes out, and folks realize Wicked saved Cash after Cash saved many of his own men. Both are true heroes, and their personalities are well-portrayed.
Naturally, there are a number of nasty characters lurking in the background. What kind of mystery would this be if everyone was nice and pleasant? We have our choice of deliciously tainted souls to wonder about as the action builds up.
Cash meets a young lady with a troubled past who quickly becomes the love of his life. Kendra, who works for the doctor who is helping Cash heal, responds with the same affection to man (and dog) and the trio soon becomes inseparable.
On the eve of a community celebration honoring Cash, Kendra goes missing.
It’s at this point that all the potential villains come into play! I won’t spoil the story by revealing any more. Have fun reading this one, it’ll definitely grab your interest as well as share invaluable lessons about our heroic servicemen and dogs.
Thank you, Ms. Harman, for a delightful read!
Kelly’s son was injured in Afghanistan. Luckily they told him he could convalesce at home. He had saved some of the others that were with him—his dog–Wicked–saved him!! He was a small town hero! Not that he wanted all the attention–but had no real choice–the Veterans were throwing a BIG welcome Home party for him.
Meanwhile his doctor needed a new assistant and ended up hiring a near relative—She and Cash hit it off immediately! The woman who really thought she would get the job was not too happy–
Then—-the current Senator wanted Cash to replace him as Senator—
Cash was feeling a lot better and decided to pick up his now girl friend and take her out to dinner—when he got to her place—she was no where to be found!!
Lots of people could have been the culprits—-but who did this? It took a bit a investigating–but all’s well that ends well! To find out how this all went down you will have to read this excellent novel!!
This mystery book from the Cedar Bay series has it all! It’s full of drama and excitement. And it’s got some humor and a little romance. Kelly’s son Cash has come home to stay with her for awhile after he was injured in the service. Everyone wants to honor him for his service. Someone he cares about is in trouble and he is determined to find out what happened to them. There’s a new dog in the house when Cash’s dog arrives at Kelly’s house with him. So there’s lots of fun with all the dogs as well.
This review is for the audio book.
I enjoyed this book. It is slightly different to the author’s normal books in the fact that most of the story is centered around the main characters family life and the investigation doesn’t start until near the end of the book. This works well because I like the characters and this is the first real introduction to Kelly’s son. This doesn’t mean the book is boring or slow in any way. In fact you get a number of perspectives leading up to the kidnapping and you are introduced to a number of characters that could possible have motives for wanting revenge on Kelly’s family. I did think I might get emotional with this book because I don’t like people getting hurt or putting there lives on the line but the author has done a nice job covering both sides of the subject from the hero to the family that is left behind and I think it is nice that people that serve there country (or humans in general) get the recognition that they deserve.
When Kelly’s son is sent home from Afghanistan after being injured, Kelly fears the worse. But he and his service dog Wicked return as hero’s and it is only right that they should be recognised for there work. However Cash’s return sparks a few jealous feeling and someone in Cedar Bay plots to take the golden boy down a few pegs.
The narrator was okay but a bit gruff for my liking or through she did speak clearly.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
